Description Story

The sun had begun to settle for night, while emitting its warm and golden light across the versatile landscapes of the Jurassic, comprised by open plains and forests, that accompanied those open areas like a green belt.
But this didn't prevent the habitants to be active, following their daily business of foraging for something to eat and to drink, finding a new territory or nurturing the next generation of their own kind. Calls were travelling through this place with its patches of ancient Gingko trees, Cycads and ferns, but these sounds of an either friendly or hostile nature didn't play any role for the female Allosaurus, that was in search of a place for the night.

The day hadn't been much successful for the ocre colored allosaur with the broad, dark brown stripes, that emerged from a line, that started at the back of her head and created a continuous patch on back and a part of the tail until lighter stripes interspersed with the brown. She felt her empty stomach, which kept reminding her mind to find something to eat, but today the prey had been too well-protected or they had an unexpected little helper, which just had ruined her last attempt by a loud screech and revealed the presence of the Allosaurus, lying in ambush.

By now the female was wanting to satisfy her demand for getting some rest and between some tall ferns and cycads she had laid down, the deadly claws on her fingers curled inwards. The still remaining warmth of the sun made it easy to relax and she became drowsy, while the distant calls of a migrating Apatosaurus group echoed over the horizon.

Not only apatosaurs were making their way through these lands at the heralding evening, but another predator of the Morrision formation planted one foot in front of the other, until he stopped by the tree line in order to inhale the scents a breeze carried towards his nostrils.
The smells of a vivid vegetation, decaying traces of smaller and larger dinosaur species, that had visited this place maybe some hours ago, but there was also one scent present, he was acquainted with.
Therefore, the male Allosaurus changed its direction, which would lead him to the source of the scent, with that he associated some positive memories. As he walked in the sun light his yellow crests and the yellow markings, that broke up the blueish tone of his coloration seemed to glitter like gold.
At the moment it didn't bother him that he was visible for others and his patterns were contrasting with the colors of the foliage, since he had made a kill a while ago, which silenced the voice of hunger.

In the meantime the sun had steadily approached to the line of the horizon and was almost touching it as something caught the awareness of the almost dozing Allosaurus female, that instinctively straightened her body, ready to push herself on her feet. Something was coming closer to her, friend or foe.

Mere moments passed, when a blue head with two paired crests popped up next to a Ginkgo until the whole body of one of her species came into sight. And she knew him. In the same glimpse of time the approaching male Allosaurus quickened his pace and soon he stood close to her, with a hint of a smile in his face or whatever a beholder would assume to see there. But the feelings in both allosaurs would correspond to those associated with a smile.
And with the setting sun the muzzles of both Allosaurus made contact with each other, while the time of separation was over.

Info

Phew, that piece took me two months to finish and is my first piece with a background light, but my work for Prehistoric Kingdom has a higher priority than painting digital pieces
It is the colored version of this pencil sketch .
Instead of showing their teeth I decided to give them teeth covering lips, which makes them more peacefully looking, because they stumble upon after a time of separation, although they share the same territory.

The female Allosaurus is my "Allosaurus-sona" you can see here , while the male appeared first on this image .

If you want, you can watch a little timelapse video, which summarizes this two-month work:Β www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4ror1…

Hope you like it and thank you

I wish more people would see that side of dinosaurs - They were not only monsters, they also had their soft sides.
Beautiful scene, with beautiful colours, beautifully executed.

That's very sad that people often only see 'the monster' in dinosaurs or in other animals. Sure, they could be aggressive, when they had a reason to do so, but no animal is a killing machine. The picture was for me not only a way to portray my favorite dinosaur, but an opportunity, that they could be gentle and perhaps some species mated for life.

Thank you much for the appreciation of this drawing and of course for the watch.

wow two months! O_O but yeah seems you have been focused on other matters : Hmm did you use photoshop or gimp or some other program to colour this one with?
Your drawing was already excellent but now when you coloured it and some other changes it is truly amazing and superb work from you Nice story to it too and your own allosaurus looks great

I only worked besides my duties for Prehistoric Kingdom, because the project has a higher priority, since I work in a professional manner for the game. I also have reserved some hours to improve modelling or to learn new things that are related to that or digital painting.

My standard program for painting and image manipulation is gimp.

Well, I'm very glad to hear you are pleased by the final result and the story, which had formed in my mind, when I was working on this piece.

Wow, this is incredible, mind-blowing, and the best digital painting you've ever made by far!

First of all, I have to ask: which parts were done with brushes, and what parts were hand drawn? To me it looks like the large scales were hand drawn, as well as some of the smaller scales on the back of the two Allos' necks. I'd also venture a guess that all the foliage and bark on the trees is hand drawn, but the texture on the ground is from brushes. You did an incredible job painting the sky, how did you make the transition between the colors in the sky so smooth? That's something I struggle with, even though I tried your advice about the opacity and trying to blend it.

Whether hand drawn or brushes, you really did a good job on all the little scales though. They look very realistic. The shading and variation of color is also incredibly realistic. I'm glad that you gave them lips for once, too. The eyes and crests are amazing and I'm immediately drawn to them. I think a lot of people struggle with dinosaur eyes but you make them look wonderful.

I suppose, if you want critique there's really only a few minor things I can comment on. One, would be how far your Allos' toes extend up her foot. The line of her toes would probably end 3 and a half-ish scutes up, when you count backwards fromthe first scute after her toe-claw. The reason for this is that her metatarsals would start around there, I believe. Secondly, it looks a bit odd the way the fingers on her right hand are bending backwards slightly. I'm sure it's possible, it just looks a bit unnatural in that pose, I guess. Her left hand looks amazing, though. I think their necks look far better and more accurate than in your previous renditions of them.

Can't wait to see more from you.

Thank you very much for your elaborate feedback and the included questions as well.

As you already assumed the whole foliage, except some small ferns in the distance (see the rightmost part underneath the tail of the male Allosaurus, but above the leaves of the Cycad) were made with a brush in shape of a fern. The leaves of the Ginkgo trees are smaller and larger versions of a brush, that I created with a dried Gingko leaf I collected during the fall and just scanned in to prepare it in Gimp.
The scutes and the few larger scales on the male had to be done by hand. Also, the wrinkles on their necks were drawn with a round, but thin brush. For the smaller scales on their bodies I take usually a brush, which consists 4 or more dots, because I just need to dab the brush there and there.
On the exposed side of the lower jaw you can observe that I made some brighter dots to give there a hint of sunlight. Some of these brighter scales are surrounded by a darker rim to intensify the impression of a scale.

The sky started as a blue surface to have a base color, then in the next step I made the topmost part of the sky darker with some dark blue in combination with a brush, that has a fuzzy outline, while it fades out towards the edges. Opacity was something around 10% up to 20%. Maybe I should make a video in order to demonstrate how I get the transition so smooth.

Β I'm glad that you gave them lips for once, too.Β Β The eyes and crests are amazing and I'm immediately drawn to them. I think a lot of people struggle with dinosaur eyes but you make them look wonderful.Β
When I had painted their mouths with the necessary details and shades I looked at the image as a whole and thought: visible teeth would make them looking fierce, which wouldn't fit into an image with a romantic intention. Additionally, I liked to see my two Allos with those teeth covering lips so much, that I ignored the drawn teeth on the layer with my pencil sketch.
Awww, sweet to read, how amazed you are by their eyes and crests.
The eyes are usually the last part of an image I draw, because you have to be careful with their appearance if you want to make them look lively and to transport a message, an expression. Thus, I tried to give the female a slightly surprised expression, because she didn't reckon with the lovely gesture of the male, whose eyes should express a feeling of affection.

Referring to your critique I admittedly didn't pay much attention to the scutes on the feet
Probably, I wanted to emphasize with this posture of her right hand, that she is surprised or was about to get on her feet as I wrote in that accompanying story. Maybe, like in the way I would be in reality, if someone came so close to me.
