Description Waaargh! I really really dislike it! DDD'X It took too long to do, the colours aren't NEARLY vibrant enough, there's not much of a colour scheme going on, the shading is too soft and mushy, the details aren't detailed enough and it's just not worth all the effort I put into it! Waaah!

Anyway. My quest to get better with backgrounds continue (Organic backgrounds are much easier than structures and buildings and stuff where I'd need to use PERSPECTIVE DDD8 )
tried to get some foreground/background into this but I'm not sure how successful it was. I think I also played with the 'Curves' tool too much to try and get some vibrancy back into the picture DX

This image has been kicking around my brain for a while XDD there's no story behind it. It's just Usagi and Leo walking through the forest (Oo-de-lally, Hoo-de-lally, golly what a day)
I dunno why.. ..maybe they're on their way to Mt. Doom or something who knows.

XDD;; I realised after I drew this I made quite a few mistakes with Leo. First of all I forgot his swords because I draw him so often without them... then I realised I even forgot his sling thing for some reason... and then I realised this picture is VERY OOC because Leo's a lot more sure on his feet 8D;;; maybe moss is slippery and he doesn't wanna break his neck? I dunno. Make up a story or something D'X

*siiiiiiighs* The next picture will be better I promise ;___; and I'll plan my colour scheme BEFORE I start the picture next time. (that ALWAYS seems to be what kills a picture for me is the lack of planning colour-wise)

Anyway... .. er.. ..here ya go 8D;;;

no stock used for background. Hurray!

This is fine they are in a forest it is not always light in the underbrush so don't worry about it. This almost looks like they are meeting for the first time.

Maybe Leo lost his swords or had them stolen and he's going slow because he's a little down for allowing such a thing to happen?

I like it. To me there is a lot more going on in this picture and the detail like the little mushrooms/toadstools are cute.

It's not that bad! Sure, I admit I can't imagine it taking two days to do it. But ONLY? I would've done this during a month. O_o
So don't beat yourself up! It's good, and I love how the focus is on the characters; the background is soft, while they are sharp. Impossible to not look at. ^^

XDD it took 3 days but yeah 8D that's too long for it not being big and amazing D'8
I'm glad to hear you think the characters stand out though X33 that was important to me. and thanks!

This is a nice pick. It still looks like they are floating in front of the background. I don't know how to say how but you need to integrate the characters into the background. When Leo's standing on that log, his foot would be more rounded against it. That kinda thing. I just wanna help so yeah. I enjoy all your pics ^.^ No matter what. I also think your backgrounds are nice if a bit foggy compared to the characters, because I can't even make backgrounds yet ^.^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

C-Puff In reply to Donnysgirl [2009-12-10 17:58:20 +0000 UTC]

*nods* yeah. I'm trying hard to get the characters and background to mesh properly. It's always been a problem of mine and I'm trying hard to change that. I think Usagi's footing looks ok (not brilliant, but ok) but I agree Leo didn't come out so good. and I really need to work on getting my backgrounds crisper I'm always afraid the characters will disappear into them, but I need to stop worrying about that.

Pimpypants [2009-12-10 15:12:27 +0000 UTC]

I don't think you did too badly here, but the picture is kind of confusing if you don't read your blurb.

What are the specific things that you think you'd need to work on and improve in order to get this picture to look right?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

C-Puff In reply to Pimpypants [2009-12-10 17:19:48 +0000 UTC]

Well, the biggest problem with this specific picture is the lack of a light source on the tree. Yes I have the light-source defined with the colours but not with the shading, making it a confused mush.

I also feel the background-background is too generic. it would be ok if it was a darker picture but seeing as it's so bright I should've given the trees a little more character and shape.

Also, I feel the tree itself could use a little more texture, not using textures but with painting.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Pimpypants In reply to C-Puff [2009-12-10 17:27:20 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I'd probably agree with those things.

What kind of work have you done on lighting, and how are you applying lighting to your digital work?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

C-Puff In reply to Pimpypants [2009-12-10 17:41:51 +0000 UTC]

When I shade a picture, I do all the shading for the entire picture in grayscale first. Then once that's done I put the colour over it followed by the shading colour and the light-source colour. Sometimes to emphasize the light-source I'd throw a gradient over the neutral base grey set on overlay and have the shading ontop of that (set to overlay). I didn't do it in this picture though. Maybe I should have. I kinda gave up on this picture because I wasn't enjoying working on it at all any more and just threw the colour onto it just to finish it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Pimpypants In reply to C-Puff [2009-12-10 18:58:23 +0000 UTC]

Aww :/

So you're using some sort of overlay to shade? I'm really curious about your process.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

C-Puff In reply to Pimpypants [2009-12-10 19:39:21 +0000 UTC]

*nods* :3 I have a neutral "base" grey, and then I make a layer on top of that set to "overlay" where I do my shading and lighting. I just "paint" it on with short strokes using a very low opacity and medium flow.

C-Puff In reply to Pimpypants [2009-12-10 19:56:14 +0000 UTC]

XDD;; I have a lame tutorial in my gallery somewhere that gives a better idea of how I work (it's hard to explain in just words 8D)

*sighs* I'm second guessing my process. On one hand I know it's benefiting me, but on the other hand I think I should find a better understanding of how to handle colour in my process or something.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Pimpypants In reply to C-Puff [2009-12-10 21:50:36 +0000 UTC]

How did you develop your process? Did you learn it in school or something, or did it just evolve over time?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

C-Puff In reply to Pimpypants [2009-12-11 00:07:41 +0000 UTC]

XD I just evolved over time. I've never had any classes for creating pictures in photoshop. Only on how to do technical stuff (which is hell boring). 99.9999999 ad naseum % of what I know I learned from tutorials I found on dA XDD no lie.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Pimpypants In reply to C-Puff [2009-12-11 00:19:09 +0000 UTC]

Hahaha

Sheeeyit, I think I learned about 50% off of tutorials from DA.

But this is the best thing ever:

C-Puff In reply to Pimpypants [2009-12-11 03:00:30 +0000 UTC]

XDD I have heard about "YSaPS" but the only epsiodes I've seen are also ones to do with very technical things. I prefer dA tutorials because you can see which effects do what on a piece of art itself. Knowing what the layers do is all well and good, but I find with dA tutorials it actually helps me apply it to art, and doesn't just teach me the "This button does this" stuff. Especially since certain layer settings have multiple uses depending on what you do with them. 8D

I wish there were better video tutorials :/ I learn better from screenshots quilted together into a tutorial, too.

I agree with 54. There's defo a tranquility to their companionship. I really love the background and the foreground tree. I can't paint backgrounds for toffee. The background seems doubly effective with those soft brushtrokes. I'm always trying to find a way to get that effect and fAILING.

Also, gotta love the title.

XD maybe that's why I wanted to draw it, I need a little tranquility in my life right now.. and I miss my friends back home X'D

I've been away from home since February I'm not going home for Chirstmas because it's too far and there's not enough time in the Christmas break to get home, get over jet lag, have Christmas, get back and get over jet lag a second time XD;; But my dad and brother are coming here so it's ok
And yeah... it's difficult being in a new country, even after 2 years it's still not very easy
