Description
UPDATED 10/31/2011: Made a few enhancements based on feedback below. This involved fixing her cutie mark, stiffening her hooves, fixing the right hind leg, adding an overlay over her horn, and improving the blink animation. The source file has been updated below, but the original source and gif can still be downloaded here:

=======================
My most ambitious test of Synfig Studio yet, featuring Twilight Sparkle in her regular walking animation.
It took a while to do only because I was still getting used to using this program for something more complicated than stick figures, but once I got the ball rolling it was fairly easy-going. [although it still needs more polish, of course] ^^
All the animation was done using only 5 waypoints (6, if you count the blink), with the hair and cutie mark bobbing being handled by Warp Distort layers. The additional 5 waypoints needed to include the blink animation were added by duplicating the original 5 waypoints -- note that the Time Loop layer is only there to create the Youtube video rendering, but is not needed for the regular GIF render.
Also, since these characters aren't mine, the source is free for anyone in the community to use if they want...

Hi. ^^
Not usually, since I'm actually pretty awful with hired artwork. But if my interests align with those of my would-be clients, I would at least try (more for a favor than for money or points, though).^__^

Well we know Rarity's are made of marshmallow, so we can only guess what Twi's soft hooves are made of. ^^

Fixed I hope... this time I tried to align certain focal points on the cutie mark (the white stairs) with certain points on her body to see if that improves the effect. ^^

hehe, depends on the processor speed and browser. It's silky smooth here on my Ubuntu machine (especially on Chrome), but trying it on my work computer via Internet Explorer is atrociously choppy.
Likewise, my Android smartphone plays this okay, but not my Android tablet. Go figure? ^___^'

With GIFs it's a hit or miss. The bigger and more complex the animation the more likely it will misbehave in a browser. I've seen GIF animation run perfect in one browser and sluggish in another, then with another animated GIF it would be sluggish in the first browser and then run perfect in the other.
I tried the walk test out on all the browsers I have and even opened up Windows 7 and run IE 9. Here's my observation on how the browsers performed.
- Opera: Slight yay, some hiccups and the rendering is good.
- Safari: Neigh, hiccups are too frequent and irregular.
- Chrome: Slight yay, animation is running good and faster but the rendering is pixelated.
- Firefox: Yay, animation runs smooth and the rendering is spot on.
- IE 9: Long periods of no animations, rendering is okay.
Here's a screen video of the performance [link]
So it's interesting that the browsers from the respective OS (safari on Mac and IE on Windows) is the poorest. These browsers are supposed to be integrated with the computer and boost performance. Running GIFs may have nothing to do with the OS so I'm not sure if that's credible. I personally use Safari mainly for its multitouch quirks, so I'm fine with the browser since like I said GIFs are a hit and a miss.
I also tried your own test and run the GIF on my iPhone and iPad. Same result as you. Runs fine on the phone but not on my tablet. Go figure.

Wow, that's a pretty impressive little video you put together.
And yes, Safari and IE performance is downright shameful, not sure how they even dare to show their faces in public, lol. XD
And you are right, I hadn't realized that the animation in Chrome was pixelation-hell until you mentioned it. Guess they figure not all of us would pay enough attention to notice.
Indeed, Firefox is my top performer, although i can only natively try out three of those browsers (FF, Chrome and Opera).
In fairness I could make the GIFs smaller and allow them to play better on all browsers... but I definitely want the showcased versions to be large enough to let viewers assess the details. And since the source is available (on a cross-platform software solution, no less), one can always rerender a smaller version anyway. :3
Funny how the iPad had the same performance issues as my Asus EeePad Transformer... I wonder if it's just the software not optimized for applying 2D hardware acceleration over a larger resolution area. When Android 4.0 comes out with proper acceleration, I'll be curious to see if that still holds true. =v=
Oh, and hope you like Twilights' mom [just uploaded her now].

Tsitra360 In reply to C-quel [2011-11-02 19:52:51 +0000 UTC]
Yeah like browsers I don't think hardware acceleration has anything to do with running GIF animation on tablets. I believe that since Android tablets are focusing on flash animation and iOS tablets are focusing on HTML5 animation that they are not considering GIFs. I know I can run console quality games from my iPad and even stream it to my TV with no lag due to its graphic rendering power. So even if Android 4.0 comes out I honestly believe GIFs will continue to be a hit or a miss since they would be focusing on newer technologies.
Oh nice animation of Twilight's mom. Even though its recolored I can see some of the modifications in the mane and tail. The eye doesn't look right to me, like its too rounded and small. I don't know.
Also from the video I avoided showing my wallpaper. It was something I was making at the time and wasn't finished. You can see it in my gallery I just uploaded it, or just click here [link]
I'm also going to add you to my watch list. It isn't just for the animations you've been doing but I looked at your other artwork and I must say you are very good. I like the garden scene piece. I'm not a fan of anime but time to time I see something that I do like.

I see, that makes sense too. They COULD optimize it to play GIFs properly, but then this isn't the 1990's... they'd rather see that technology disappear outright. But honestly, what could we use in their place? Mini flash applets are naturally out of the question, and never did see animated HTML5 icons like that either. And alternatives such as MNGs and APNGs have sadly never gained traction.
Thank you, I kind of like Mom better too since it gave me the opportunity to clean up some of the source. Sorry about the eye... actually it should be the same size, except I put the mass up vertically rather than horizontally (in the case of twilight).
ANd thank you, likewise your work seems pretty rock-solid, so off on my own watch list you go.
Now then, off to check out this epic wallpaper....
