Description “This is where the fun begins” - Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (19th May, 2005)

(LORE 📖)
Anakin Skywalker was the legendary patriarch of the Skywalker family, an exceptional Jedi Knight and the prophesied Chosen One, destined to bring balance to the Force and destroy the Sith. Born into slavery on the desert world of Tatooine during the Late Republic Era (32BBY - 19BBY), “Little Ani” was raised by his mother Shmi Skywalker alone and would, in the span of a decade, rise from the winner of the Boonta Eve Classic to becoming the most powerful and well-respected Jedi who ever lived. Anakin earned his knighthood during the Clone Wars (22 BBY - 19BBY) following years of tutelage as Padawan under fellow Jedi Knight and his “brother” Obi-Wan Kenobi. Throughout the Clone Wars, he became General of the 501st Legion, a battalion of clone troopers led by Captain Rex (CT-7567) and became master of his own Padawan, Ahsoka Tano, who he would train and grow close with throughout the duration of the war. The Clone Wars (and the preceding Seperatist Crisis) would damage Anakin’s perception of the Jedi, as they failed to save his mother Shmi from being brutally murdered by Tuscan Raiders, pushed Ahsoka away from him and consistently shunted his growing lust for power, as he secretly coveted for the position of Jedi Master on the Jedi Council.

Unbeknownst to all the Jedi and the wider galaxy, Anakin was secretly married to the former Queen and then Senator of Naboo Padmé Amidala. Anakin deeply cared about Padmé, as he began to devote his sole existence to protecting and caring for her throughout the Clone Wars. It was this deep love and attachment to her that would ultimately compel Anakin to seek out Darth Sidious (Chancellor Palpatine) in 19 BBY in order to save Padmé from apparent death during childbirth. This would lead Anakin down a vicious chain of events, beginning with the execution of Count Dooku during the Battle of Coruscant and being denied the role of Jedi Master before finally culminating in him joining the Sith, dismantling the Galactic Republic, destroying the Jedi Order and butchering the Seperatists on Mustafar in a grandly orchestrated and perfectly executed takeover by the newly christened Galactic Emperor Palpatine. Anakin’s story would tragically conclude on Mustafar, as he accelerated Padmé’s demise by nearly choking her to death and would be mortally wounded in a climatic, epic duel against his former master and friend Obi-Wan Kenobi, eventually being reborn on Coruscant as the Sith Lord Darth Vader.

Unbeknownst to Anakin, the dying Padmé would give birth to his fraternal twin children Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa, with the former becoming a Jedi Knight and helping to save his father on the Second Death Star in 4 ABY, redeeming the fallen Jedi and aiding him fulfilling his role as the Chosen One by balancing the Force through the “apparent death” of Darth Sidious. With his dying breath, he thanked Luke for being “right” about him as he became one with the Force, peacefully watching the celebrations on Forest Moon of Endor along with Yoda and Obi-Wan Kenobi. Anakin’s presence during the New Republic Era (5 ABY - 29ABY) and the First Order Era (29 - 35 ABY) was minimal, only appearing to those closest to him like Ahsoka Tano in the World Between Worlds to complete her training and Rey on Exegol, giving his strength to her in order to “restore” the balance of the Force by vanquishing Darth Sidious once and for all on Exegol in 35 ABY.

(PERSONAL THOUGHTS 💭)
Hello there. For my first Star Wars artwork for 2024, I decided to get the ball rolling and hit it out of the park with my new, updated portrait of the legendary Jedi Knight himself, Anakin Skywalker. Now the last time I did Anakin was back in November, 2022, which I then coloured and reuploaded in February, 2023. So it’s been almost a year or two since I’ve done the most important Star Wars character to fight in a war in the stars. Anakin will be the first in a series of three artworks called “the Skywalkers”, featuring new and updated portraits of the three canonical and central members of the family across the nine films. So yes, I’ll finally get around to doing Luke and also redo Rey as well (or I could throw a curveball and make it Leia 🤭).

Now the artwork is heavily, heavily based off a similar looking artwork by Madibek Musabekov, so all credit should really belong with the original artist who helped inspire my artwork here. Now I do think the artwork is very “airy”; basically, I think I might have overdone the erasing of existing pencil lines and employed the use of Sketchbooks’ airbrush tool too extensively to the point where the final product doesn’t have any “solidity” to it, especially around the nose region which came out by far worse than any other area of Anakin’s face. But then again, compared to my older Anakin Skywalker artwork to this, at least I got him looking kind of like Hayden Christensen and not some mashed potato version of him (and he’s actually doing a really cool pose to as well).

Anakin is a complicated character (as I guess he was designed to be?) for me personally, asthere is a lot I like about him and his character; Hayden Christensen and Jake Lloyd did the best performances they could with the scripts they were given (especially the latter, poor kid), he and Obi-Wan are such an iconic duo together (especially in the beginning of Revenge and throughout TCW, so many good moments to choose from) and his bond with Ahsoka is very well written even within the confines of TCW. But therein lies my big issue with his character: the disconnect between Anakin in the Clone Wars and Anakin in the Prequels. He feels almost like two completely different characters between both media, like he has undiagnosed bipolar disorder or something. Like I get why this happened, the Prequels came first then TCW second, but the end result is that, IMPO, Anakin’s characterisation ends up being “jerky” at its best and inconsistent at its worse (like Sequel levels of inconsistent). Also little appendix, should have been a force ghost in the Sequels, especially in either Last Jedi or Skywalker.
