Description “I may process thoughts and emotions differently, but it does not mean I feel any less than you” - Star Wars: The Bad Batch (15th Feb. 2023)

(DESCRIPTION 📕)
A still-life, coloured photograph of Tech (CT-9902)’s custom Katarn-class clone commando helmet and goggles, heavily inspired by the photographs featured in Star Wars: 100 Objects by Kristin Baver.

(LORE 📖)
Tech (originally known as CT-9902) was one of the five members of Clone Force 99, colloquially known to the wider galaxy as “The Bad Batch”, an elite squad of clone commandos within the Grand Army of the Republic who defected from the Galactic Empire and became rogue mercenaries. As a result of pre-determined genetic mutations by his Kaminoan creators, Tech served as the computer and weapons specialist of the Batch, with data analysis skills just as precise and accurate (if not more so) than most droids.

As part of his specialised kit, Tech wore a modified Katarn-class clone commando helmet, complete with a specialised computer visor which could translate alien languages in the absence of universal translators or protocol droids. Unlike the plastoid helmets of the successive Imperial and First Order stormtroopers, Katarn-class clone commando helmets were made of durasteel, allowing Tech to tank blaster shots that would be considered fatal during later eras of galactic history. Tech also wore a set of distinctive goggles which he rarely took off, perhaps due to his genetics causing him to become somewhat blind. Beyond sharper vision, Tech’s goggles did not possess any additional features or technical functions.

Perhaps as part of his genetic experimentation before birth, Tech was born exhibiting autistic characteristics and personality traits, although he was never formally diagnosed. Tech often struggled with expressing his emotions and understanding the emotions of others in typical ways, often coming to emotional blows with Omega, his “little” clone sister who was a natural empath. Yet despite this emotional block, Tech best expressed his empathy for those he loved through his actions, most notably through his tragic sacrifice on Eriadu in 9BBY. Additionally, Tech also was not great at recognising social cues, especially when it came to acknowledging Phe Genoa’s romantic feelings towards him, which he brushed aside. Tech was hyperfixated on recording and collecting alien sounds and languages which, in rare instances, came into tactical importance such as the Batch’s mission on Skako Minor to find and rescue Echo.

(PERSONAL THOUGHTS 💭)
G’day to ya all. With the Bad Batch speedily coming to a conclusion, and continuing on from my “Lest We Forget” poster, I wanted to highlight and celebrate one of my personal favourite autistic characters (and one of my favourite clones) in the Star Wars saga with this coloured photograph of Tech’s helmet and goggles.

Now, I’m not particularly well-versed in photography; perhaps I could’ve taken a more clearer and sharper photograph with a different camera or with different settings engaged, but for a first try, imo, it came out surprisingly okay. I used Canva’s free background remover to eliminate the clutter around and behind Tech’s helmet and goggles (which come to think of it, I didn’t make super clear in this photograph) and I decided to take inspiration from Star Wars: 100 Objects for the coloured, blank background, which obviously allows for greater attention to be placed onto the goggles and helm.

I’m still salty over Tech dying; the first, authentic and proper autistic representation in the entire Star Wars franchise… and he dies before we even get to know who he truly was. I get this was done to place greater emphasis on Echo, but one of my biggest gripes with the Bad Batch as a show was that the first season should’ve been used to explore the character dynamics and interpersonal relationships between each member of the Batch before getting into nitty gritty plot of the show, which was to fix Episode 9 and introduce a new heroine for young girls to idolise instead of Rey “Skywalker” or Ahsoka Tano. But of course instead, all of S1 was dedicated to Hunter and Omega’s relationship, and of course, all of S2 to Tech, just so they could kill him off to resolve the issue of two “tech-y” characters and add stakes to the series. But then again, “no one’s ever really gone” aren’t they? So I guess I can’t be too salty right now; one way or another he’ll come back because Filoni will find a narrative use for him (plus we never saw a body so there’s that…).
