Description
Illustration of Aslan anatomy and style...My first RPG work was for Digest Group Publications, and their MegaTraveller product line. In 1991, I was given the task of creating a series of illustrations for an alien races book. More accurately, a feline-based race called the Aslan. Really enjoyed doing that particular group of illos...so when I was asked to do a new drawing (based on the old one), I jumped at the chance!Related content

I always sensed that when the Solomani (Earth folk) first discovered that species, and the discovering party submitted the designation of Aslan, it was more than just that they were some sort of generic Turkic human beings who found them. I always had a sense that the discoverers were definitely Chechens.

You could be right, Julian...but I can't speak for the original intent of the Game creators. Certainly open to speculation!

Hi Michael!
Found you site when looking through Bryan Gibson's and Rob Caswell's Trav pics.
Thank you for your brilliant Aslan images in MT's "Rats & Cats" sourcebook. You remain the only trav artist who has drawnΒ both the Aslan boomerang and spear-hook.Β

MT's "Rats & Cats"? Hmmm. *scratching head* I'm not familiar with that. But that could be the result of my aging grey matter!

Heh. "Rats & Cats" = "Solomani & Aslan" for MegaTraveller.

No, my friend. It is muscular, but it is not poisoned -- unless one used science to add poison. Interesting!

Actual, Wolfie, that's what is called a 'dewclaw'.Β They are common on most dogs, cats, and even deer. In the case of the Aslan...the are located in the center of each palm...and are retractable. Quite the handy-dandy weapon!

My Traveller days were very cool, Paul. I got my start with that game. This commission is a rehash of an Aslan anatomy drawing I did for a 'Races' book called Solomani and Aslan (1991).

I did a similar anatomical piece in Solomani and Aslan (Digest Group Publications)...but this particular piece was done as a commission.

Cool. I don't have many of the Digest Group books, but the ones I do I'll keep an eye out for you

I did a decent chunk of artwork for DGP before getting swamped by West End. I have those products around here somewhere.

Cool cool. I'm still a babe in the woods when it comes to such things. Was a collaborator for an old game called MORPHEUS back in the day and earlier this year I did a sourcebook cover for Palladium Games, but that was my first real paying gig for a real book

So did we commission this, or is it newer?
Man... your Aslan work still rocks my world When's the last time you drew one?

Hmm...the last time I drew an Aslan was...let me think. Oh yeah. THIS one! I did it as a commission about a year and a half ago. It's STILL great fun working with the Aslan!

True. I believe I depicted the Trianii in the Corporate Sector Sourcebook. They're a feline-based race...so similarities are unavoidable. I'd say the main differences are the snout..and the hands.

Yes...the Aslan are a cool race. I was fortunate enough to get a chance to do a series of illustrations for a roleplaying book that detailed this wonderful race. I'm sure I will be doing more at some point.

You drew a scene very similar to this in a Star Wars game supplement right?

caesar120 In reply to RobPMFF [2012-03-18 03:17:41 +0000 UTC]
Actually, Rob, I did a very similar drawing in a gaming product called Alien Races: Solomani and Aslan for a company called Digest Group Publications. They produced books for a gameline called Traveller. It IS possible that I drew something similar for a Star Wars product...but I did hundreds of illustrations for many West End Games Star Wars books. Just can't remember!

Yeah..it was fun stepping into the Wayback Machine and reminisce about my pre-West-End DGP days. Ironically, my fondest memeories revolve around illustrating the two alien races that were the least imaginative: the Aslan (cat race) and the Vargr (dog race). Cats n' dogs!
