I remember the Adventure Journal! I think I might have an issue or two buried in some boxes in the attic. Those little stories were inspiring, as were the accompanying illustrations. I'm glad they decided to package some of them in those "Tales" books. One that I remember vaguely (it's been years since I read any of the journals) is a young woman playing some sort of holochess game, with Stormtroopers entering a door behind her. The thing I loved was how the tenseness of the situation was reflected in the fact that the troopers were behind her. I'm not sure if you were the one who drew that one, but it made an impact on me.

In my opinion, the Journal concept was great move by West End. Emphasis on the story as inspiration. Readable...with the gaming aspect as a secondary element. I have Volume 1...issues 1 through 11, Tyler. A quick scan through them didn't match your description of the "impact" illustration you mention. Furthermore...I can't recall doing a holo-chess illo...but to be honest, I did so many illustrations there's no way I can remember them all! Looking through the Journals I (re)discovered many illos I'd forgotten I'd done.

Hmm. I might be mis-remembering that one. One of the stories in "Tales of the Empire" which takes place on the Kuari Princess had a description of that illustration, and I could have sworn at the time that I'd read that story in the SWAJ and it had that illustration. But I dunno. Maybe it was in another product, or my brain just had a moment of deja' vu.

Just took a quick look on Wookieepedia. Looks like many of the Journal stories got reprinted in 'Tales From The Empire'. Maybe you can find the illo again with a bit of research.

Maybe. I hope so; hopefully it's in one of the issues in my attic. I could save myself a bit of time by just looking through them.

I searched for 'Kuari Princess' and came up with a story by Charlene Newcomb from Journal 8. I sent you a Note.

Well, Matt...this is pencilled on Duoshade drawing paper (the shading tones are imbedded in the surface of the paper itself, and is "developed" using a special fluid...brushed on wherever I wanted shading)...then inks (pen and brush). Lastly, shading. Twas fun!

Thanks, Ben! I really enjoyed doing illustrations like this to accompany the stories in the Star Wars Journals.

Do you remember what issue this was from? I can't put my finger on their assailant's species... Sunesi, maybe?

Dave, this is from Adventure Journal #10 (1996). It accompanied a Kathy Tyers story called "Only Droids Serve The Maker"...which also had a nice color piece by Matt Busch. And I think you may be right in identifying the alien species.

This is a Star Wars Adventure Journal piece. The Journal was kind of a bold idea at the time of it's launch...considering it was an RPG product. A small-book format publication, in which the adventure ideas were presented as short stories. Very readable, stand alone stories. It was a refreshing change! Consequently, most of the pieces that I consider my most successful were done for the SW Journal.
