Congrats on the DD. It's a really nice tutorial showing how you can take the base and return it to it's bare bones before building up on it again

Okay, so my curiosity finally kicked in and I need to know now.
What is this whole doll thing?

They always seem to be really small images, pixelated but not actually pixel art. They seem to have something to do with bases but their purpose completely escapes my comprehension.

dolling is along the lines of digital paper dolls, those things you had as kids with clothes with the tabs on it, and could trace over the body to make your own clothes for your flat paper doll.

Bases are pixel bodies which are given as resources, the same as stock photography on dA, so that artists can then pixel their own clothes and hair onto the base. It's a very community based thing because it surrounds sharing and collaberating with basemakers and such. Unlike pure pixel art, dolling doesn't have rules that say you only have to use the 1px pencil tool, you can use any sort of tool you want. So it really is like dressing up a barbie doll in any clothes you can possibly imagine! XD

Some people find it lazy or boring, but those of us who doll enjoy it and enjoy sharing what we do amoung our community. As a basemaker myself I enjoy sharing my anatomy talent and not just hoarding it for myself. It might not be for you, but if you're interested you should grab a base and have a go You might not like it, but you'll never know until you try.

So why are the dolls so small? Wouldn't it be easier to add in details for clothing on a larger base?

I don't think it would be my sort of thing. Not that I don't like designing clothing, but to skip the base drawing part would be letting myself get lazy with anatomy practice.

oh, it won't let you get lazy on anatomy practice. WE dollers edit the heck out of those bases before we're done with 'em! new head, arm and legs? pffffft. NO problem! and you can always take up basemaking yourself. A lot of dollers doll on their own bases.

they were originally small because they came from pixel drag and drop dolls, the kind that can be found at the doll palace. These were just little games where you drag clothes onto the body, but as artists various people got annoyed with the lack of clothing choices so made their own on the bases, then started making their own bases.

also because dolls originated as pixel art, which as you know is small. Part of the fun is working on such a small scale, it cuts down the time needed to make a doll so that people can do it for fun on the side of other art projects, school or careers.

Dolls have been bigger, there are a number of bigger bases and dolls around dA too, but the best ones are always smaller, because bigger ones just don't quite work because pixel art doesn't really work bigger.
