Description
A convention commission of everyone's favorite mechanic from Chip 'n' Dale: Rescue Rangers. This one was done entirely from memory, and I was rather pleased with how it came out, so I had to grab a photo before letting her go.Gadget Hackwrench is copyright Β© Disney; obviously.

Thanks. It's a little off, but not too shabby from memory...

This does not surprise me.
Monty was always my favorite; but Dale and Gadget were tied for a close second. (For different reasons, though. I think I liked Gadget more for her personalty, while Dale was of course just hilarious.)

Β Little Jenan loved Gadget because she was smart, because her name in the Arabic dub was the same as my mom's, andΒ because she was the only girl but not the "damsel in distress". There was this awful pattern when we were kids where cartoons would usually have only one girl among the main characters. I think they call it the smurfette principle. But at least this show's one girl was an awesome girl.Β

They gave her your mom's name in Arabic? What're the odds of that? I wonder if the meaning of her name was retained in the translation, because I'm guessing it would be odd if your mom's name is an Arabic word for "machine"...
There is a tendency in cartoons for there to be only one female character (I myself am guilty of it with Kaitlin) but I think that's more an issue of who's creating a cartoon; you tend to draw what you know. If you go looking through your artwork, you'll find most of it contains female characters, because that's what you know.
That's one of the things I started Gidget for; to stretch myself a bit. That one's got a female lead, a female secondary character, and [spoiler alert!] I'm planning a female pirate character, too. To be honest, though, I've found the best way to write for female characters is to not treat them as female characters at all, but just characters.
My philosophy is that it doesn't matter if a character is male or female, we can all enjoy and relate to a character if done well. That's one thing I find interesting with the whole "My Little Pony" movement. It's pretty much the inverse of what you were talking about; all female characters with only one major male character. Yet still, a lot of guys like it, because it's got good characters. I like to cite that one to back up my theory.

Β Her name means "talents". Gadget is a very talented young mouse, so it's suitable don't you think?Β
Β
Β I think cartoons these days are doing a much better job with inclusiveness. It may be optimistic of me, but I think the Smurfette Principle is rare in cartoons these days. And I think you're completely right regarding writing characters. Personally, I don't think my personality would be any different if I was born a guy instead.Β
Female pirate character sounds pretty interesting! Can't wait to see your sketches of her.Β

"Talents" actually works pretty well for her; makes sense. I assume, then, that your mom must be a talented person too?
And your personalty is one-of-a-kind; I don't think anything would change that. It's been my experience that guys and gals really have more in common than is often portrayed, anyway. I mean sure, there are differences, but at the end of the day we're all still only human...
Hopefully, one day I'll get to the pirate part of the Gidget comic... I might see if I can dig up a couple of sketches and give you a preview, though...

Β I think she's an amazing and talented lady, but she's always modest about it. Modesty is one of her talents. She's also a doctor, a great story teller, and despite her claims to the contrary, a skilled manipulator.Β
Fun fact: One-of-a-kind is also a girl's name in Arabic = Farida.
I thought about what it would be like to be a guy for a while, and despite the advantage of most of the world's societies being patriarchal, I'm glad I'm not one. It's the beards. You either get this terrifying bush growing out of the lower half of your head, or you have to scrape a sharp metal object against your face every day. Yikes. I mean, waxing your legs once in a while isn't pleasant, but still! Then I went to ask my bro about it and he said shaving every day is just annoying and he uses that machine thing anyway, but he can't imagine going through the pain of putting hot wax on skin and then ripping it out mercilessly. I guess we both have out own problems but we've grown accustomed to them. Then we talked about Emma Watson for a bit. We love her. Did you hear she's playing Belle in the live action version of the movie? Perfect casting.Β
ANYWAY (went off on a tangent there, sorry) I'd love to see any sketches you have of pirate gal. Any ideas for names yet?Β

I think I may have said this before, but your mom sounds like quite the lady. I think you take after her in a lot of those respects.
As for being a skilled manipulator, aren't all moms to some degree? After all, they have to keep us kids in line somehow...
I've noticed from our various conversations that there are some very pretty Arabic girl's names. "Farida" sounds nice, and I honestly think your name sounds rather pretty too.
And ah, the things we human beings do to ourselves... I can assure you there's nothing terrifying about having facial hair. Your brother is right though; it's annoying having to shave it off constantly. I actually let mine grow out a few years back, and it was nice not having to shave. That is, until it started getting unruly and then it became even more of a hassle to maintain it and keep myself from looking like a hobo that just rolled off the Midnight Train to Georgia. It itched, too... So I got rid of it.
I'd Nair it off or something; if not for the fact that when I'm older I might want to grow it out into a long white beard so I can pretend to be a wizard or dress up as Santa at Christmas. I'm an odd duck...
And speaking of wizards, I kind of thought Emma Watson was cute when I first saw her in Harry Potter. She played Hermione so long, though, that people might have a hard time divorcing her from that role. Not that she wouldn't fit as Belle, mind you. It makes sense to me, anyway.
As for the pirate, her name is Scarlett and she's the captain of the sky pirates. I cobbled together a few of my better sketches of her for you to check out here .

Β Yeah, she's just moving on from bookworm character to another bookworm character. Though lately she's been doing a lot of stuff for the UN. I think she's a bookworm in real life too.Β
Β Scarlett's a good name for a pirate! Reminds people of blood and stuff. Very gory.

I hadn't heard that about her doing things for the U.N., That's actually quite interesting. I do seem to remember reading somewhere that she is in fact rather bookish in real life, though. She's definitely very intelligent.
Also, I think the whole red/blood thing did have some connection with my naming the character Scarlett, at least on a subconscious level.

It's been so long ago I honestly can't remember the rest of that thought. It's probably something mundane like "she's awesome", but maybe I was going to say something like I admire her in the same way I admire golden age actresses. Katherine Hepburn is talented, no one questions that, but she's my favorite golden age actress because I love the indomitable spirit that comes across no matter what character she's playing. I feel like back then it wasn't enough to just be able to act, you also had to have plenty of personality.Β Β

Meh, I didn't figure you'd remember.
I personally think that really great actors have to have plenty of personality to draw on, regardless of their era, Katharine Hepburn included.
I always get Katharine Hepburn and Audrey Hepburn mixed up though... It's the last name, methinks. The fact that they were active during largely the same time period doesn't help, either.

You're right. Upon further inspection, the hair's also a little off too. But, considering I haven't seen this cartoon for over a decade, I still thought it was pretty decent just from memory.
I really should see if I can find some episodes to re-watch. It has been quite some time...
