Description
"It’s thinking..."-SEGA Dreamcast United States Marketing Campaign
Generation of gaming: 6
Lifespan: 1998-2001
The SEGA Dreamcast was described on its package as "the ultimate gaming system". Truth to be told, it most certainly was. It had many quirks and features, such as a built-in internet modem with the help of Microsoft (Something that wouldn't be mainstream in the home console market for decades), and special "memory cards" called Virtual Memory Units (VMUs) which had a little screen that could display information of the game being played. The Dreamcast's system architecture is derived from the then-recent SEGA NAOMI arcade hardware, resulting in converting arcade games from the Dreamcast to be easy and flawless. The Dreamcast's release date of "9/9/99" in the United States is known as one of the most intense marketing campaigns of the gaming industry, and it enjoyed considerable success upon release. Unfortunately, by the turn of the millennium, SEGA's victory was short-lived as Sony introduced the PlayStation 2, a console that was way better than the Dreamcast in every way possible. As a result, SEGA incurred heavy losses later on. Eventually in 2001, SEGA announced their withdrawal from the home console market with the discontinuation of the Dreamcast, restructuring itself into a third-party developer.
Despite of all of its problems, the Dreamcast is fondly remembered for being SEGA at its strongest. The gimmicks of the console would leave lasting legacy on the gaming industry, shaping up new ideas such as online play and high quality video resolutions. Many of its games, such as Crazy Taxi, Shenmue, Jet Set Radio, Samba de Amigo and Jet Set Radio have sustained cult followings due to their unique premises, and have been cited as the peak of SEGA's creative capabilities. Today, the spirit of the Dreamcast lives on as Microsoft has developed their spiritual successor to it: The Xbox Series.
