The Saturn is SEGA's entry into the fifth generation of home console gaming. It experienced moderate success in Japan. However, in the US, that was a different story. It was released way too early in the United States, and hence developers had insufficient time to develop launch titles for it. It also could not keep up with the Sony PlayStation and Nintendo 64 there. Not many third-party developers were interested in making games for the system due to its complicated hardware, and there was a lack of a proper Sonic The Hedgehog game released on the Saturn due to the cancellation of Sonic X-Treme. Despite this, the Saturn has developed a cult following in recent years.
