Absolutely Stunning.

How do you keep the dark background transparent without creating mud or a very dull area. Do you do it in one wash?

I love strong darks in watercolour, but find it difficult because it dries lighter.

I needed two layers to achieve the dark shade of the background, so the colour mix itself is rather saturated. I try to keep the number of washes down for the darkest tones, since the paint tends to lose its lustre with too many layers.. but I agree; it's difficult to get a dark shade with only one or two washes.

The photo is stunning indeed but i find your watercolour even more impressive!It's amazing how you reproduced all those textures on the petals..I also love the rich and deep colours (especially of the background) - may i ask how you achieved those?I'm still not able to get such dark colours with watercolours,was the mix that dark in the first place or is it because of too many layers?

In any case,that's some remarkable work up there.Skillful and beautiful.

I decided to use a greenish black shade for the background to enhance the red hues of the rose, and for that I mixed Payne's Gray with a cool green shade and a bit of Sepia. It was enough with two washes to achieve the saturated colour, so the mixture itself was fairly dark.
Payne's Gray and Sepia give a very dark and neutral black.
