Description
If you find this little walkthrough useful, I’d be grateful if you could add it to your favourites or leave a comment; just to let me know whether or not I should create another similar project in the future.Link to part two
I don't know what's with the scanner, but the colours of the painting (especially those in the face), are closer to the original photo in real life and not quite so "harsh" as they appear here.
I'll see if I can take a photo of the painting in daylight instead, later on.

Nice tutorial however i have a question: do you work the first face layers using the wet on wet technique? i mean do you use clear water on the face before start, then aply the first skin tones, then do you let them dry and aply water again or just let it dry?
thank you in advance.

Gracias!
I do indeed; I start out with a wash of clean water and add the paint with a wet on wet technique. The more layers I add though, the less water I use, to be able to control the flow a bit better.

Thank you for the reply
So, would be a general wash (the first one) to lay the first block of colors, then let it dry before lay the second wash with a bit less water for start defining colors, let it dry and so on?
Sorry if i sound noob at this ^^U

My pleasure!
That's exactly it - or rather; that's the way I do it. I'm sure there are many other ways to paint portraits in watercolour. ^^ But I start with a pale wash wet on wet, lots of water, not too much paint. When it's completely dry, I wet the area once more, but with less water as to not have the underlying wash of paint dissolve. Then I let it dry once again, and build up the more subtle shades carefully with rather diluted paint (to get transparent layers) wet on dry, until I'm happy with the result.

I had some difficulties with the darker colors and the clothes this time but thanks to your tutorial i ended with a good picture instead of the messed colors i used to get on previous works
Thank you, i don´t hate watercolors anymore ^^

Thank you for linking me, it's so great to see the outcome. It turned out brilliant! I so love the sheer transparency of the colours and the highlights, the tones.. and the clothes look equally great, if you ask me. ^^
I'm so glad to hear it!

This was a lot of help, especially with the different layers of masking fluid you put on the hair. Hair is so tricky! Thanks for uploading this.

Excellent tutorial! If I had the confidence to attempt a watercolor portrait of this calibre, I'd definitely use this tutorial. Clearly laid out instructions with every detail thought of and easy to understand. You'd make a great art/watercolor instructor.

Thank you so much Kassie, you're too kind!
I've seen the watercolour paintings you've made though, and the portraits; so I know that you could combine the two and make something really great out of it. I hope you'll give it a try some day!
