Because they are messengers of the dark shadows which is a foresight of the evil that will come. And Mirkwood elves (and others) detest drawfs and are in general not fond of others and prefer to be only with their own kin but they are in a very close touch with nature. Even more as other elves like the Noldors in Rivendell. The forst is Thranduils kingdom what makes him especially sensitive for whats going on.
