Ok, I changed this to show all of my progress steps, with the new addition of the last step.
Full Version of Completed Piece - [link]
** Original Comments **
Yes, I'm trying for a realistic painting, lol. Key word: trying, lmao. These are just the base colors and I'll be working to blend them as I work.
Now, if I can just make my tablet behave, maybe I can finish this in my lifetime, lol. I'm hoping that updating the drivers is all it needed. I'm running Windows XP 64bit now and the website for my tablet doesn't list any 64bit drivers.
*** Update #1 ***
I added a little more to the base colors and blended them a little bit more. I also added some shadows and highlights of details to the eye area and the muzzle.
*** Update #2 ***
Ok, I started on a little more depth to the cheek and muzzle. I also started some of the shadows cast by the bridle.
*** Update #3 ***
I added more of the BASE colors for the rest of the neck, I still might tweak some around. Expanded on a little more of the fur texture at the top of the neck. And started work on the bridle details. I like how the leather looks, but I think I still need to work on the metal parts, lol.
*** Update #4 ***
Now, I've completed the details to the bridle. I think I got the metal parts right now. I still need to start on the reins. I started with the mane and forelock. I'm not sure if I'm satisfied with them yet, lol.
Anyway, still a ways to go before I'm done and I haven't even thought about what I should do for a background, lol.
*** Update #5 ***
I finished a lot of the details. I changed the background color. I'm still trying to sketch out a proper background, but they aren't satisfying me, lol.

Wow, you really have done well on this so far. The image looks very realistic. You did splendid on the fur texture on the neck and head. Your halter is coming along very nicely, great job with the leather. Just one little note I would like to say.. .you might try making some of the hairs on top of the ear stick up, that way it doesn't look outlined and blurry. But really, this is amazing. You have inspired me to try creating a realistic portrait (someday).

I know you could do it!! A tip someone recently told me is that I should simply use my line art as a guide and turn off that layer later, I tried it once on a simple picture of one of the water-type Pokemon. I first colored the whole thing with the lines on, but once I was done, I turned off the lines and spent some time touching up the edges. It was a rough painting, but the concept was there,

With all these positive comments, I think I would be silly to not even try another realism piece, . They certainly take up a lot of time, lol.

*blush* I'm glad you like how it's turning out,
I'm actually trying to just work without the silly cartoony lines my previous work has always had. I am trying out two new tools that I never really knew anything about before; Dodge and Burn. I'm working my shadows in to give the piece details in places like the muzzle and the bridle. The texture for the fur is all being done by hand, I'm just bad when it comes to the areas where fur changes directions, lol (between the start of the mane and the neck).
π: 0 β©: 1
nanecakes In reply to Candrence [2008-11-21 18:09:54 +0000 UTC]
Ah yeah...I find fur tedious so I usually stay away from realistic digital paintings of animals lol...I am a lazy bum I know
I think you are doing a wonderful job! Dodge and burn are very helpful in these areas of depth!! The fur looks great so far, but I know what you mean about where it changes direction, it kinda gets hard to not make it look like just a lump/knot of fur or something at least that is the problem I get hehe...
Keep it up! The result will be very rewarding for you I think, even if it doesn't turn out how you imagined, it is a new task, and you are learning fast/well!

Yuu're still a lot more patient then most of us... seriously, I wouldn't be able to sit such a realistic horse out.
π: 0 β©: 1
Candrence In reply to MiraeChaos [2008-11-23 20:53:56 +0000 UTC]
hehe, well, I guess it's mainly because I have always loved detailed paintings of horses and I never thought I'd be able to pull one off, lol. As I mentioned in another comment recently, I recently tried a "line-free" painting on iScribble and despite it being low-quality and sketchy, I liked how it turned out. So, I decided to go with a horse head because it doesn't require all the shading of the full body.
I had the most fun when I was working on the halter!!! The leather was soooo much fun!! I think the gold chain is going to be fun too, lol.

MiraeChaos In reply to Candrence [2008-11-24 07:53:40 +0000 UTC]
I may be a semi-realism artist, but I totaly agree. Metal parts are fun, thou I always preffer doing them with dodge/burn, looks semi-realistic enough for me Leather is also fun, Butn I'm always complaining to myself that it takes to long for something that's realy just a smal detail in the picture
π: 0 β©: 1
Candrence In reply to MiraeChaos [2008-11-24 15:56:52 +0000 UTC]
lol, I know what you mean about small things taking too long, lol. I pretty much used the Dodge/Burn tool through this whole piece, lol. I found those tools are nice when you've got, say, the leather of the halter on a different layer from the horse, which means that I can Burn right up to the edge without hurting the shadows on the horse.
π: 0 β©: 1
MiraeChaos In reply to Candrence [2008-11-24 16:29:16 +0000 UTC]
Well I always use different layers for each color, so that's never been a problem to me
And yes, people often say dodge/burn is for amateurs, but sometimes the effect kan be realy nice...
π: 0 β©: 1
Candrence In reply to MiraeChaos [2008-11-24 16:38:04 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I would probably be tortured by the big artists if I ever called myself anything BUT an amateur, lol. *shrug* If those tools worked for me, why shouldn't I be allowed to use every tool in Photoshop? lol
π: 0 β©: 1
MiraeChaos In reply to Candrence [2008-11-24 17:11:26 +0000 UTC]
Then big artist should shut up, cuz looking at your art, nobody should ever dare calling yuu an amateur!
Btw... Plenty of big artist (in te sense that it's their work)use dodge/burn.
π: 0 β©: 1
Candrence In reply to MiraeChaos [2008-11-24 17:42:29 +0000 UTC]
Hehe, well, I think by definition, I am an amateur because I have yet to make a penny on my artwork, lol. Well, I won like $40 on an airbrush painting I did in high school Advertising Arts class, lol.

Γnd it's beautifull.

Candrence In reply to MiraeChaos [2008-11-26 17:02:12 +0000 UTC]
*blush* It was certainly a lot of work to get the details right, but I'm glad that I took the time to make it look my best, I'm most proud of how the gold chain and clip turned out from the lead part. You can click Download to see the full size version and you'll see what I mean about the gold chain,
.
My only problem now is that my printer sucks and it ruins colors and details badly when I try to print, I've tried all kinds of settings. *shrug* Oh well
π: 0 β©: 1
MiraeChaos In reply to Candrence [2008-11-26 20:23:59 +0000 UTC]
That does suck... not being ably to print your own work... Not that I ever print something, but mine isn't this beautifull X3
But I see what yuu mean with the chain and the clip. Yuu have the right to be proud of that. But now that I look this close I do see a tiny little thing, that I couldn't see in the smaller version. the point where the clip touches the metal ring it's sorta flat... But then again, It's barely noticeble.
