Description
UPDATED FOR 2011! this chart is out of date, please direct your attention to the new and improved versionFinally it's done!!! this was a little project I gave myself to do. to see how many different body types I could come up with- and this isn't even the tip of the ice burg folks!
and I'll tell you exactly why too. it annoys the living piss out of me when people put their character cast pictures up and there is NO body type differential at all. you'll get height differences and race differences IF YER LUCKY... but body type seems to come last ( sometimes race comes last in character development it depends on the person making the characters)) and I think... that having nothing but 6 foot tall Aryan super models in your cast is a very amateur mistake when it comes to character development. it's boring, and casts like this FAIL the silhouette test.
( fyi: the silhouette test is when you black out everything on your characters and line them up to see if other people can tell them apart from one another, to make the test extra hard make yer characters bald for the test)
" the world is not full of reds and blues it's full of wonderful shades and hues!" this is a quote from an ad - the product and the ad were horrible but those words were very true and i applied them to body types. the world is not full of fats and thins it's full of everything in between! I apply most of these to my own characters, also theres a few that got thrown in there just for shits and giggles and aren't to be taken too seriously.
I could add more to this chart but this is enough for now. it's mostly a personal reference but I do hope it's useful to others who are working on more chracter diversity in their lineup, I know I always am. I recommend "force: dynamic life drawing for animators" by Michael D mattesi for anyone who needs more reference.

Thank You, I just wish sometimes that men and others would see this as beauty...I know Not all men and others see being heavy as bad, but I can't get over how badly I think I am...
And hopefully one day, I will present myself better.
Thank You for the encouragement

back to the art tho. I thought it was important to get this out there--- some people took it waaaaay too seriously even tho I said in the description not too. (people dunno how to fucking read) ya gotta add humor in art even if it's just a tiny spec of it. I'm so glad you like!

Some good anatomy here, but saying which is the "normal" or "average" type may make some people worry about their own body types. Assigning personalities to the way someone is built is also somewhat of a faux pas (I'm an "hourglass" but I don't consider myself a sex kitten.) Additionally, not all girls have wide hips. The "Average" figure seems to be quite thin for an ordinary human being and has rather large breasts, too.
Once again, good variety of figures here but perhaps some ill-informed comments on each one. I don't mean to be over-critical but the issue of female body image is a contraversial one and I don't think it's appropriate to say which figures are better or more "normal" than others.

Candy2021 In reply to brontolina [2007-12-24 22:59:17 +0000 UTC]
Calling soemthing "average" (hence why I did not say normal, I said average) is not going to give anyone a complex, it's a scientific term for the BMI rage of people.
also...as I said in the comments ANYWAYS " also theres a few that got thrown in there just for shits and giggles and aren't to be taken too seriously" it's food for thought- a snack your not meant to live on snacks....also this is meant for chracter types not for people types... in reality people can have any body type, but when it comes to characters it's rare the make the troll dwelling bridge hag a sex kitten body type.
taking into account art style as well, based on how myself ( and 90% of deviant art draws) style wise even the petite type would be considered a big fatass. so base don my style my average is pretty../...average for how I normally draw girls and has a lot more pudge then I normally add on.
also note: I never said what figures are better, I simply pointed out the differences. becuase none of them are better then the others- if anything in the chart I bashed the unhealthy skinny one and the one with large breast implants, two stereotypes that are very negative in the female agenda.
besides all of that?....I never did care what society finds 'appropriate"...if I did there wouldn't be a chubby type of a buff type on here.

Apologies for not noticing the description. My bad.
Also, my complaint about the "average" figure was that most "average" girls aren't as thin as that. It looks like a slim, hourglass figure to me.
I'm just offering a bit of constructive critique, there's no need for the "look at me, I have attitude and don't care what anyone else thinks" comment. If you dislike hearing other people's opinions that much, then change your options on this deviation to discourage critique.
Bear in mind that I did actually comment on the good aspects of this piece, too.

Candy2021 In reply to brontolina [2007-12-25 00:06:09 +0000 UTC]
oh I understand what you were saying, I'm just letting you know that in forms of art style the 'average" is more meaty then common figures seen on DA. example...my average is modeled after the type found in scientific anatomy books where figure is based on BMI [link] which is very different from unhealthy types like this [link] and I go for scientific models instead of looking at air brushed photo shopped creations that are in magizines. what the fist thing they teach you in 8th grade health? " when boys go threw puberty their shoulders get wider and their voice gets deeper, girls hips get wider and their voice gets higher" and I used this primitive knowledge and applied it to both my charts.
I didn't do the look at me attitude thing..you pointed out that it's inappropriate and I pointed back i don't care what the general populous finds appropriate. it's answering what you said, not discouraging critique. plus the critique is for art quality, not personal opinions on subject matter.
I am grateful you found the chart useful. just thought I'd give you a few FYI's in the mean time.

I do have the "primitive" knowledge you refer to, I'm not stupid if that's what you're suggesting. I just thought the "average" figure you showed was quite thin. Perhaps it's just the way I was looking at it.

Candy2021 In reply to brontolina [2007-12-25 01:38:02 +0000 UTC]
not saing your stupid..I was just replying to something you said earlier about girls not having big hips--which alot of them do.
my my so defensive, go on the Gaia forums if you wanna looking for people to argue points with.
and as I've explained twice now..it's a matter of style.... COMPARED to my tinner figures i.e the "petite" the average type is pretty..average.

brontolina In reply to Candy2021 [2007-12-25 02:57:07 +0000 UTC]
So, not all girls as your deviation states, right? That was exactly the point I was trying to make. I said that not all girls had big hips, not that they didn't at all. Please read my responses properly in future.
I think you're right in that it's a matter of style. Obviously, your female figures are somewhat stylised to fit the way you draw, which is fine.

this is true...some girls don't have much hip action--then again some girls are born with testicles and mistaken as boys until their 7. I'm not going to accommodate the teeny tiny minority of boy-shaped girls in a chart devoted to teaching people how to diversify girls. with such a tiny percentage ( 2% at most) if I did I would STILL be making the chart.
i look at it this way...at least my chracter lineup has diversity. most don't.

So basically, if a girl doesn't have big hips then she is unfeminine-looking? That seems awfully unfair.
