Description UPDATED FOR 2011! this chart is out of date, please direct your attention to the new and improved version

Finally it's done!!! this was a little project I gave myself to do. to see how many different body types I could come up with- and this isn't even the tip of the ice burg folks!

and I'll tell you exactly why too. it annoys the living piss out of me when people put their character cast pictures up and there is NO body type differential at all. you'll get height differences and race differences IF YER LUCKY... but body type seems to come last ( sometimes race comes last in character development it depends on the person making the characters)) and I think... that having nothing but 6 foot tall Aryan super models in your cast is a very amateur mistake when it comes to character development. it's boring, and casts like this FAIL the silhouette test.

( fyi: the silhouette test is when you black out everything on your characters and line them up to see if other people can tell them apart from one another, to make the test extra hard make yer characters bald for the test)

" the world is not full of reds and blues it's full of wonderful shades and hues!" this is a quote from an ad - the product and the ad were horrible but those words were very true and i applied them to body types. the world is not full of fats and thins it's full of everything in between! I apply most of these to my own characters, also theres a few that got thrown in there just for shits and giggles and aren't to be taken too seriously.

I could add more to this chart but this is enough for now. it's mostly a personal reference but I do hope it's useful to others who are working on more chracter diversity in their lineup, I know I always am. I recommend "force: dynamic life drawing for animators" by Michael D mattesi for anyone who needs more reference.

Edit: Male version now here! - [link]

not necessarily BIG hips. but hips that are the same width or wider as their shoulders. yaknow to accommodate having babies?

I didn't make the rules or anatomy or femininity I just follow them.

Then why did you say in your deviation, "ALL girls have wide hips?"

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Candy2021 In reply to brontolina [2007-12-25 22:12:31 +0000 UTC]

becuase they do. with the exception of a microscopic minority- I think i went over this with you. like 2 posts ago.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

brontolina In reply to Candy2021 [2007-12-25 23:21:09 +0000 UTC]

Surely if there is a minority who don't, then not ALL girls have wide hips, thus your statement is technically wrong. Please stop condescending me with the whole, "I have already said this, you're obviously stupid because you do not understand" crap, it's getting quite irritating.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Candy2021 In reply to brontolina [2007-12-25 23:44:07 +0000 UTC]

then stop repeating stuff and I won't have to re-state stuff.

and again...as I've said countless times... I think it's a FAIR statement to say that all girls have wide hips becuase all girls are meant to carry children in the same sense its fair to say " all girls don't have testicles"-even though there is a small minority that do who are born with them due to a birth defect...but you never hear anyone going " WELL TECHNICALLY THERES A SMALL BIT THAT DO HAVE TESTICLES...." becuase that logic can be applied to anything and in the English language we would never be able to use the word -all- becuase there is always an exception to every rule.

that is called splitting hairs. and it is irritating. and if your so irritated, bear in mind i never asked for your 2 cents.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

brontolina In reply to Candy2021 [2007-12-26 17:14:31 +0000 UTC]

That's the thing. You're saying that a girl only has small hips if they also have testicles, which is a pretty narrow-minded attitude.

You never asked for my two cents, but you didn't discourage critique, either. I gave constructive critique, even giving some positive remarks, but you rather rudely replied to me, implied I was stupid by repeating things and acting condescendingly, showing that you can't properly accept criticism at all.

Perhaps this is something you need to think about when allowing people to criticise your deviations. Also, try getting some manners. You evidently lack them.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Candy2021 In reply to brontolina [2007-12-26 19:41:30 +0000 UTC]

...okay--WHAT!?...i never said only have small hips IF they have testicles...I said small hips on a girl is a rarity LIKE a girl with testicles..

that right there shows me you are eaither not listening to what I am saying, or too bent on proving your own point to care.

and..you hate me repeating myself but you keep making me do it, the critique system on DA is for art quality not for personal opinions / information, which you never "critiqued" my art, only the text around it which are personal thoughts and do not effect art quality at all.

your obviously a very soft individual if if you think I've been rude to you, but staggering into someones DA page and giving them a ton of reasons why their wrong (without reading the description i might add) really is not very polite either. since we both seem to have the same view "stickily thin girls = not a good message" I don't even see why were here.

now are you going to give some REAL critique? or continue to clog up inbox and throw off my deviation comment count?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

brontolina In reply to Candy2021 [2007-12-26 19:43:12 +0000 UTC]

I did give you real critique. I gave both positive and negative opinions on your work. And now I'm beginning to realise you're too far up your own arse to give my opinion any value. I would rather just finish talking to you, as you seem to be incurable of your snotty attitude.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Candy2021 In reply to brontolina [2007-12-26 20:13:59 +0000 UTC]

you gave "critique" on text, not on art work.

just an fyi since I can't say it any simpler then that.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

brontolina In reply to Candy2021 [2007-12-26 22:35:40 +0000 UTC]

Okay, well, here's a critique. I hope it's to your standards.

Nice, bold clean lines and good knowledge of anatomy. The contours of the body shapes exhibit a great deal of fluency. A good guide for body types which shows exaggerated versions of each type as a basis for each. My one niggle is with the "chubby" type - do large women's buttocks carry above the hipline? I am not sure if you meant it to look that way, but it just does to me. Otherwise, very good chart. I'm sure many people will find it extremely helpful, as there needs to be a larger spectrum of figures portrayed in people's characters, generally.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Candy2021 In reply to brontolina [2007-12-28 10:44:05 +0000 UTC]

muuch better. thank you for the input I will defiantly take the hip/ass thing into consideration. becuase your absolutely right with that

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

brontolina In reply to Candy2021 [2007-12-28 18:40:02 +0000 UTC]

I wasn't sure if it was just the perspective, but a lot of your larger-figured women seem to have the buttocks placed above the hipline and it looks a bit confusing. Of course, with a bit of extra fat on the love handles, there might be a bit more padding around that area - just, perhaps, not so much.

no your absolutely right, in an attempt to make torsos appear shorter I have been putting bums up higher, I've just been obvlious to it, I'll find a way to off-set that.

lots of people are a mixture of types or a combo of em. if I had to pick on for you I'd say petite or pear shaped. only not as extreme as their shown here- you know me..I extremeize EVERYTHING.

to their point wher eit's not even believable anymore XD

i like your style, you make it your own where anyone else (like me) would just look like we had no idea what we were doing if we tried what you do.

i actually see myself more as the "chubby" one you drew...which makes me sad that i had that tomato soup for dinner. i really didn't need it. -_-

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Candy2021 In reply to TheRaineDrop [2007-12-22 06:08:33 +0000 UTC]

I'm still working on to see how far I can push it before it...breaks.

soup is good, I'm not too fond of tomatoes, but if theres no gas in the tank the car will die- and Hmm thats interetsing...everyone sees the same image I posted yet see something different...someone above perceived the hourglass one as being a BAD thing...which funny enough thats the one men fap to the most.

I'll never understand people 9.6

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TheRaineDrop In reply to Candy2021 [2007-12-22 06:16:11 +0000 UTC]

well, until it breaks, it's awesome. once it does, i will deny ever having known you.

i ate the soup, and i don't know why...perhaps i'll die. *hums the song*

hour-glass is gross in my opinion. any of the body-types that sport a high body-fat percentage, like "chubby" and "hour-glass"...big butts are probably the most repulsive things to me.

i will never understand people who find Scarlette Johanson beautiful...

and i wrote something today on my arm while at work...i don't know if it means anything to you...but it has me in a dave:
Someone tell me why today isn’t the day; why every day I look to tomorrow to bring me fulfillment and only watch my life pass me by.

men are pigs...sex, beer, BJs and sports...throw in some cars, maybe some music, and their "boys" and they are content. a woman should be desposable to them because a woman doesn't fall under any of the above listed catigories other than sex.
*hates men right now*

i still look at what i wrote on my arm and think "i have a fat arm if i could fit all that" and then i get sad all over again.

not a big fan of sarclett myself but then again I rarly pay attention to anything thats not animated. but if I had to gues sit's prolly becuase she looks like she wouldent break during sex. and unfortunates thats all men think about sex or..if they drink beer.

" I'd like a beer and I'd liek to see something nekkid" - Jeff foxworthy.

i quote jeff way too much.

Hmm but that is a very powerful quote...i think it's becuase people can never ever be content. if their rich they want more money and so on and so fourth... just learning how to be content is something very few humans can do.

and I am envious of these rare people.

Whatever, I'm rambling. Nicely done, Candy! What a nice reference, thanks for sharing! X3

Nice experiment! Actually on the topic, I love `mooncalfe 's comic characters for exactly that 'variety' reason. Most of them are female, but they all have different bodies, ranging from anorexic to chubbys, it's actually what makes me like his stuff.
Though, I'm disapointed there's no 'bodyshape' I really fall under up there Hehe, but that's okay.

She has yogurt every morning, so I don't think that she is going to go there. I don't know if osteoporosis is common in Dutch genes, but I know pencil figures are. Seriously, there are no hips on half of the girls in my school.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Candy2021 In reply to Waterbender6 [2007-11-24 22:20:05 +0000 UTC]

uhm..if yer ribs are sticking out in every direction like the girl I shown in the Nichole Richie body type.... then thats not healthy no matter what ancestry you have. if girls have little hips they typically have little shoulder to balance it out, their hips and shoulders are typically the same width. are their girls with smaller hips then shoulders? yes, but it's a very rare body type.

but ironically it's the only one ever seen on TV.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Waterbender6 In reply to Candy2021 [2007-11-24 22:25:20 +0000 UTC]

They aren't sticking out in all directions, but I think that she comes pretty close. Her hips and shoulders are the same size. Extremely skinny.
Her father was the same way when he was her age, and he isn't thin now.
I think it depends on the shows you watch.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Candy2021 In reply to Waterbender6 [2007-11-24 22:36:17 +0000 UTC]

well it IS possible to be very thin without having an eating disorder ( the chances are very unlikely but they do exist) but gaining weight can be just as important and losing it and people forget this becuase it is grinded into the heads of the world that skinny = good. when it can be veyr unhelathy just like being too over weight.

but lucky for me- with this chart it's based on cartoony proportions so real life rules really don't apply.

well that hard, the anime style is already stale and stuck on one body type- in fact it's very rare to see chubby anime characters. who AREN'T like computer nerds.

so i can't help you there- BUT if you do manage to figure it out let me know. becuase the only chubby anime characters I have EVER seen are like--- the dad from spirited away and this little girl in petshop of horrors.
