My father is like that hippie... though he's half-hippie, like hippie-country man. Can't coherantly follow a serious conversation, not caring if you're trying to open up without mentioning some hippie music festival from thirty years ago or fall into a tangent of uselessness.

Hippies are strange. I have never once held a coherent conversation with a legitimate hippie.
I once spent an hour discussing Victorian fashion trends with a pair of Neo Nazis, but never once talked to a hippie who could follow what the previous sentence was.

I can't believe that people would do this! I know talking about heavy subjects is hard and people don't always know what to say, but this is NOT HOW YOU HANDLE THIS SITUATION!!!

This is one of my biggest pet peeves... I try expressing something personally meaningful to me to someone and they turn it into an, "oh, yeah, well, here's my experience"... as if it's some sort of experience/feelings competition... So I just don't.

Dude, I seriously agree to that. They either make it some sort of competition, flat out ignore you, or just change the topic to something completely irrelevant. It has happened too many times to me as well to the point I don't as well.
What makes it worse is when those types of people go 'no one ever listens to me UwU'. I'm probably insensitive saying this but perhaps it's because you do the same to others? Regardless if they do it online they'll get a HEAP of attention anyway.
