Danse's constant fanboying over the BOS and BOS-brand racism aside, I always found him really boring. It seems like his adoration for the BOS takes up at least 60% of his personality (which isn't a very fascinating 'character trait') He might even be more boring than Preston for me to be honest, but at least Preston has the 'nice dude' thing going for him.

Oh my god blind betrayal. Man, I kinda regret killing him my first run

CAPTAIN-CAPSLOCK-PHD In reply to Wolfina2 [2017-10-05 20:39:07 +0000 UTC]

I almost felt bad for him in Blind Betrayal, but then he said something about how he'd felt pride when 'defeating the enemies of the Brotherhood'.

Then I remembered that a good portion of those folks he considers 'enemies' are just regular people.

Ghouls just trying to run a farm are enemies. Synths who escaped a life of brutal slavery are enemies. People looking out for those synths are enemies. None of whom are the slightest bit interested in the BoS. No, the BoS stepped into THEIR world, THEIR lives, declared them 'abominations', and slaughtered them like cattle.

How many innocent lives did Danse take without a shred of guilt? How many more would he take even after this revelation?

No, I have no sympathy. Not for him, not for any of the BoS.

Wolfina2 In reply to CAPTAIN-CAPSLOCK-PHD [2017-10-10 17:36:15 +0000 UTC]

yea a lot of his dialogue past blind betrayal makes no sense?

"With the brotherhood behind us we'll never fall"

Dude. Maxson wanted me to kill you, did you miss that? Did you forget that whole thing where I had to wear a dress to save your ass?

I think bethesda just kinda half-assed it which is a bit lame. I still dislike the BoS in general, and their xenophobic ways, but i feel like if bethesda hadn't half-assed his arc he could have had some redemption, sure his motives for redeeming would be selfish as the only reason he would change would be because he himself was something he deemed an 'abomination' but if blind betrayal had the option of overthrowing maxson (Like apparently they had originally planned).. well it might've made a difference

A lot of shit is kinda assumed with how the BoS operate too, because they say they don't like ghouls feral or not, and synths and super mutants and will kill them on sight. Yet Danse does nothing to any of your other friends who are these things. Sure he's kinda a jerk to them but at no point does he outright try to kill them. Neither do any of the BoS when you bring them on the Prydwen or Airport, which seems a bit weird, I mean I just killed a couple feral ghouls and helped Danse get a thing yet you'll overlook what your leader just said about Synths? "Synths must be killed on sight" Me: Is it cool if I bring these Synths on your base where they could probably fuck shit up and kill all of you if they wanted? BoS: We'll insult them but honestly will do nothing to stop you.

(And a lot of Danse's likes/dislikes kind of conflict with the whole hating ghouls things too? Like he'll dislike it if you're rude to wiseman at the slog about his farm, and he dislikes it if you kill Kent in the silver shroud. He likes it if you let him die, but if you kill him. Nope he doesn't like that??? He also likes it if you agree to help kent in the first place? Like wut?)

I'm not defending the BoS by any means, they're a horrible organization with horrible ideology, with a plan to take out the institute that spits in the face of everything they supposedly believe in. (Which was probably thought up by Maxson when he was 10 and saw it happen in Fallout 3, because it is seriously the kind of plan a 10 year old would come up with.)

It just really annoys me how some parts of the BoS were really thought out and others seems like they were just kinda tossed in there because, why not?

I appreciate that you at least tried. The third time he screamed "ABOMINATION" he died as a person to me.
Especially seeing that I irl have been called more than one of the slurs he uses, he's not exactly endearing to me.
Hence why ghouls and synths hold a special place in my heart.

Danse is one of those characters who could have been great, if the developers had actually had him grow as a character in-game. Heck the Brotherhood of Steel of Steel as a whole could have been better handled, especially given that the unit seen in the Commonwealth used to be one of the nicer ones!

Here's how it originally went for me:

Me: "Hmm, that's alot of synths. I guess I should hit the ignition button on the rocket engine. 《Presses button》 Danse will probably back out of the chamber just in time and -why is he not getting out. Danse? Oh my god, I just killed Danse."

Character: "Oh my god, are you alright!?"

Me: "Oh my god, how are you not air pollution!?"

Idk. When I learned he was actually a runaway synth that had his mind wiped, I was all types off feeling bad for him. Like dude. So messed up. Still, before then he'd kill all of us with out hesitation is the BOS ordered it. Now he's just a sad lonely npc that doesn't talk to me. He just hangs around Sanctuary, I have him guarding the place.

I doubt it. If he actually had a revelation on how the people he'd killed were actually people, I might have some sympathy.
If he then tried to actively make up for the destruction he was personally involved in, I'd respect him.
But just climbing up his own depressed asshole because "I was an enemy all along", he has my disgust.

The BoS propaganda is so deeply ingrained that when he first finds out he's a synth, he wants you to kill him and is proud of you if you agree. Even if you talk him out of killing himself, he will still spit out BoS propaganda bullshit for the rest of the game.

Honestly it's pretty sad and depressing.

I don't respect him either, but I kinda pitty him since it's a classic example for 'the way to hell is paved with good intentions'.

What got to me though is that during the blind betrayel quest, it's those companions who Danse gave most shit, that speak up for him (like Valentine, Deacon and Hancock).

CAPTAIN-CAPSLOCK-PHD In reply to RumAndNuka [2017-02-13 18:09:53 +0000 UTC]

Isn't that interesting?
I wonder if it's because they understand what it's like to be abused and discriminated against, so their knee-jerk reaction is to stand in support.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RumAndNuka In reply to CAPTAIN-CAPSLOCK-PHD [2017-02-13 21:13:41 +0000 UTC]

Probably at least in part, thought with Valentine and Hancock I guess that's just the kind of person they are. At least it's seems like they would have done the same even before they experienced the discrimination towards themselves.

As for Deacon, considering his backstory one could argue that he was in a very similar situation as Danse... with his bigoted past catching up with him to bite him in the ass.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CAPTAIN-CAPSLOCK-PHD In reply to RumAndNuka [2017-02-14 22:56:28 +0000 UTC]

You're right. They both care a huge deal about helping people who need it. Hell, the entire reason Hancock ghoulifies himself (it was also a partial suicide attempt though he never says it directly) is out of completely uncalled for guilt over an event he had no control over. That's how much he cares about other people.

I don't believe for a second that Deacon's telling the truth there. University Point has no records of a "Deathclaw gang" nor of one guy killing all of them. If that was a real incident we'd see evidence of it. Bethesda's insanely thorough about this sort of thing. That and Deacon's a pathological liar.

I believe he's the Lone Wanderer from FO3. There are whole write-ups about this and he fits just too perfectly.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RumAndNuka In reply to CAPTAIN-CAPSLOCK-PHD [2017-02-15 17:33:28 +0000 UTC]

Yeah the suicide attempt is heavily implied. The odds were fifty-fifty that he'd either become a ghoul or get himself killed and the sad part is that he apparently saw that as a win-win situation.

Oh I've read about that theory and I think it's a great one!

Guess I was/partly still am just naive enough to belive that at least Deacons last story wasn't a lie as well. The regret seemed genuine enough, so my head canon is that his story started out with at least a grain of truth...

Atlas-Wake [2017-02-07 16:19:11 +0000 UTC]

Danse's 'join the Brotherhood' speech was just so embarrassingly vainglorious, too.

Boasting about just how great it is to be under his command. The command that had already gotten most of the people under it killed.

Playing up the benefits of having the Brotherhood at your back, ready to die for you at a moment's notice. Yeah, thanks, but the Brotherhood seems plenty talented at dying without the excuse of my presence. Especially once they get their hands on vertibirds.

And, of course, insulting the shitty, pointless mercenary life that you are clearly living without his illustrious influence. At that point I just wanted to say, "Seriously? I took a couple hours out of my shitty, pointless mercenary life to save your asses, because it was clear from your radio chatter that you're as incompetent as your faction has always been. It was going to be my good deed for the day, but now that you've gone and opened your mouth, I'm pretty sure I can't even call it that anymore. So thanks. Good luck with that whole spectacular conquest of the wasteland thing."

I love this comment. This is a good comment.

The BoS are so useless but so blustery that it feels insulting. I mean, one minute they're calling my homeboi ghouls abominations and the next I'm taking down a Vertibird with a single 10mm pistol. That's pathetic. I've had mirelurks that put up a bigger fight than a fucking helicopter and mirelurks have the good sense to not talk.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Atlas-Wake In reply to CAPTAIN-CAPSLOCK-PHD [2017-02-08 03:32:32 +0000 UTC]

Also, mirelurks tend not to spiral into fiery explosions at the slightest provocation.

The worst was when they (the Brotherhood, not the mirelurks) tried to land their disintegrating vertibird on top of a parking garage. A parking garage packed with the husks of nuclear cars. I had just enough time to 1. veer from amusement into horror at the realization of what was about to happen, 2. haul ass with Hancock close behind, 3. get far enough away to be merely irradiated instead of obliterated.
