CAPTAIN-CAPSLOCK-PHD In reply to ??? [2017-03-06 22:14:17 +0000 UTC]

I imagine the guys with this job have serious mental issues after doing it for too long.
What a horrible responsibility.

I kinda know those feels. In my case, going to the hospital for someone who was just brought there, and the nurse who points you to two cops when you check the reception.

I know that feeling all to well. Every time my life starts to go well it fucks me over and now I'm anxious when life gets good. My mum was diagnosed with cancer last year and last week she got the all clear that the cancer was gone with treatment. I had dreamed of this moment but now I'm even more anxious at what could happen next

I remember an interview with the people who do that. They say it's perhaps one of the hardest jobs in the Military.

People at the door are always terrifying.  Especially soldiers.  Especially for a kid.  One looks like the epitome of serious business, while the other is grim beyond qualification.  Seems as though bad news is going to be delivered that will irrevocably mar the family.

Are you even serious with her dress right now? I just want to escape Fallout!!!

Nah, I'm just kidding. I love your Fallout comics and this is an excellent, subtle reference that's made even better by the fact that her little dress is clearly homemade.

Of COURSE she was a fan of the original series as a kid!
I love that you saw that she made it herself.

Oh wow, those first three panels really got to me, very well described how I feel sometimes.

And I've got a very bad feeling about those soldiers being there, things aren't looking great for Corelle's family.

The expression on the right-hand soldier is just perfect. It looks as though he would wish himself into a happier place and time if he could.

Not something you'd ever want to see, especially as a kid.

MrDataTheAwesome [2017-02-07 22:06:46 +0000 UTC]

I read this page and my face got hot. This is exactly how it goes. You see them at the door and you think "No they must have the wrong house, there's no way my loved one was killed it can be them it can't be." Or "Maybe my loved one was just injured and they're just hear to tell me they are in the hospital.". But it isn't either of those things. It's the biggest thing military families fear. The news that their loved one got murdered in some foreign country by some twit with a gun or an IED. The universe is about to slap you across the face and make you afraid to ever enjoy another moment of happiness. It'll always be there to remind you that anytime you are enjoying something to be prepared for it to be taken away in the blink of an eye.

Anyway yay for a new page. It's cool to see Corelle as a kid again despite the circumstances. Nice to see the detail of the Soldier's in dress greens, good job with that. And the white text on the top is exactly how I operate so I feel ya Corelle.

CAPTAIN-CAPSLOCK-PHD In reply to MrDataTheAwesome [2017-02-08 09:53:55 +0000 UTC]

I take it you or someone you knew had this experience? I'm terribly sorry if that's the case.

It's weird to know how many people relate to the white text part. I wasn't expecting that.

MrDataTheAwesome In reply to CAPTAIN-CAPSLOCK-PHD [2017-02-09 18:36:51 +0000 UTC]

Yes unfortunately it was my family and I that it happened to. I lost my dad just like little Corelle.

Aw I just noticed the horseshoe above the doorway! My dad did that in our houses too. XD

MrDataTheAwesome In reply to CAPTAIN-CAPSLOCK-PHD [2017-02-14 00:50:03 +0000 UTC]

It's alright, I know some people have gone through much worse than I have. So I am thankful for the wonderful mother and little sister I have with me now.
I'm just wondering, does your family have any military background or you just chose this fact for Corelle for the sake of diversity? Either way it's very well told. I forgot to mention the fact the soldiers expressions are the perfect mix of serious but sad while trying to be respectful.

Oh...

I have this, too.

This thing where I'm of the firm belief that the good things in my life only exist to be taken away, however terribly, and leave me with gaping, open, emotional wounds that never heal. I have several instances in my life where this has proven to be true, so it must he true for everything else, right? I'm just waiting, half-holding my breath, for things to all go to shit and for the ground to fall out from beneath me.

When it doesn't, it feels like somehow, I just have to wait a little longer before the bad thing DOES happen.

"it's like the universe is saying "hey what do you think you're doing being happy? you aren't allowed to do that! prepare to get punished!'"

Wow, does that line hit so hard and it's something I've thought myself.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CAPTAIN-CAPSLOCK-PHD In reply to Labyrinthgirl17 [2017-02-08 09:48:05 +0000 UTC]

It's something I repeat to myself a lot subconsciously. I figured it's something Corelle would have in the back of her mind, too.

Labyrinthgirl17 In reply to CAPTAIN-CAPSLOCK-PHD [2017-02-08 16:32:32 +0000 UTC]

Though I do agree, sometimes it feels like happiness is not allowed, because I've noticed a pattern that when I'm happy and have good news to share, something horrible happens. I try to not think the cosmos are out to get me, but sometimes I do wonder.

Wohoooo a now page. <3
I love, how the story continues,  Corelle sharing one of her secrets. I love all the details and corelle's outfit. Those bunny shoes!

Oh god.  Military knocking on your door never means something good. Especially those wearing dress uniforms.
And may I ask, if those laurels at the door mean something? Don't know if there is some kind of tradition in the USA of hanging those on the doors, for family members being in "action" during their army services?

CAPTAIN-CAPSLOCK-PHD In reply to josykay89 [2017-02-08 09:44:45 +0000 UTC]

I've seen people with laurels on their doors before but I never knew what it meant. I added it as an interesting detail.
