Andrew Loomis, in his book, 'Drawing the Head and Hands', shows how the face can be sectioned in primary and secondary planes. Using these planes, we can determine how light effects the fact and how to 'basically' show the shadows. Of course there are gradations in the shadowing; that's why I've tried discerning that with my arrows in the bottom left examples using curved lines and straight lines to show when shadows get darker in gradations and when the plane has a, more or less, consistent value throughout, respectively.
