I apologize if this is difficult to follow.... geez, you think since I'm a graphic designer I should come up with some sort of better layout/design... xP but I'm too lazy.... maybe next time....

here are some techniques I've picked up, hopefully it will be helpful to you

I also have a book recommendation! this book helped me a lot, and is what some of my techniques are based on: [link]

please give me feedback on how I can improve my tutorials! feedback will encourage me to make more tutorials! thanks!

Used your mid-profile tip. That circle within a circle was a great tip: likalaruku.deviantart.com/art/…

I have a question. Why are the lines paralel, shouldn't they be vanishing to the horizon line too?

Well done, thank you for this tutorial! I'm trying to break my line habit, but funnily enough if I use "hairy caterpillars" it comes out way better then if I try rhythmic strokes....no idea why....

rockinrobin In reply to Fires-storm [2012-07-02 17:29:45 +0000 UTC]

hmm. well, it takes practice to get the hang of having a smooth and steady hand when drawing for sure. one recommendation might be to try drawing with your arm more, rather than just your wrist/fingers, if that makes sense. it can help to practice drawing really big too. it's easy to get stuck drawing everything the same size, which can limit your improvement because you just rely on muscle memory too much. so sometimes if you get some big paper (like 18"x24" newsprint or such) and draw really big for a change, and work outside of your comfort zone a little, that will help you to improve. ^_^ that's what helped me a lot, at least.

Fires-storm In reply to rockinrobin [2012-07-02 18:01:22 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the tips, I may try bigger paper, but I don't have much room, lol, I already work on a little bit bigger then standard copy paper sized sheets. I also do try to use my arm as well as my wrist, and mainly I've noticed that I don't really do classic "Caterpillar" lines, I more like to connect different curved strokes when I'm going different directions, such as for muscles and such, rather then broad sweeping strokes, rather more like 1 stroke equals one thing, you know? I'll try to use some of your advice

Huh! Very interesting and helpful.

I'm curious about the hairy caterpillar lines, though. I am an unwitting perpetrator of hairy caterpillar lines. Why aren't they good sketching, and what constitutes good sketching?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rockinrobin In reply to Zingaresa [2012-07-01 16:21:33 +0000 UTC]

ah, well, basically the idea is to use complete, fluid lines in sketching. it helps to get the movement and rhythm which makes for a better picture overall. for example, in my figure drawing classes at school, we draw on huge 18"x24" sheets of paper (and bigger), even if it's just at 2 minute gesture drawing.

eh, I'm not sure if I explained that very well. but it's a good question. I will try to make a tutorial about that soon :3 also, here's an excellent book on figure drawing that talks about that sort of idea and gesture drawing: [link] it has a look inside feature on Amazon, so if you click on the cover you can flip through several of the pages. I think that artist is a pretty good example of what I'm talking about. ^_^

Sweet! Thanks for the link. I'll definitely check it out.

Thanks for offering to make a tutorial about sketching, too. That would be super helpful if you do decide to do that.
