Description
here's my first (of many, I hope) tutorials. here's some stuff that I think would've been helpful to know when I was first learning graphic design, so I hope it will be helpful to some people here! (: these effects are very useful for both photographs and drawings/paintings and can be tweaked to your liking. if you have any questions please ask and I'd love to help!drawing by Hiromu Arakawa (Fullmetal Alchemist).
Edit: Wow, this was way more popular than I was expecting! thanks so much for the favs and comments everyone! I'll try to make some more tutorials like this very soon. (:

Very nice way to show what layer styles can do, I think you portrayed it really well! I'm sure many, many people will find this very useful - myself included

This is great! I use blending modes all the time, but I never thought of using a blur or a gradient in them! Thanks for making this!

You have no idea how helpful this is. Layer effects confuse the hell out of me.

Very helpful. I'm sure I'd have gotten there by trial and error to find out what everything did, but this is way easier. Could you do one will the full list of what all the layer modes do? Ex: multiply, lighten, darken, color burn... I know you've done a few in this one, but what about all in one? (or parts if that's huge)

hmm yeah that's a good idea. I'll probably make an extended version as a continuation of this tutorial sometime. but the best way to figure out what everything does is just experiment with the different settings and stuff, you can probably figure a lot out on your own! (:

Cool. You are right though on the experimentation part. It'd still be nice to have something to reference.

This is great ty so much. Any tips on how to make a gradient? Like for the gradient layer you have, do you manually use the airbrush or something and try to spread the mix of color like that or does SAI have an option to create gradients like the one you show? Thanks

rockinrobin In reply to joekey [2010-12-03 19:47:15 +0000 UTC]
hm.. I guess SAI doesn't have a gradient tool, so you'd have to do it manually. but it should be easy enough to do with the paintbrush or watercolor brush, just set the blending on a high setting and mess around with the opacity settings. Photoshop or other graphics programs have a handy gradient tool though.
