Description
Originally, the legendary actor Lon Chaney who played the Phantom of the Opera and the Hunchback of Notre Dame, was supposed to play Dracula in Universal's 1931 adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula, inspired by the stage play by Hamilton Deane and John L. Balderston. But unfortunately, Lon Chaney died of throat cancer in 1930, so instead, they got Hungarian Actor Bela Lugosi from the stage version, and his performance became one of the most iconic screen portals in all of cinema being imitated in Sesame Street and Hotel Transylvania. But what if Bela Lugosi "hadn't" played Dracula, what if Boris Karloff had debuted in the Universal Horror Series earlier and "he" had brought this iconic role to life like he would be with Frankenstein’s Monster? To do this would be tapering with history and if Boris Karloff played both Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster and the Mummy all at once, then his legacy might overshadow every other iconic horror actor like Lon Chaney Jr., Vincent Price and Peter Lorre. Personal, as controversial of a statement as this is, I don't like Bela Lugosi's performance as Dracula, I like him better when he's being over to top and insane like in the Black Cat, the Raven and Murders in the Rue Morgue. But Dracula is supposed to be way more subtle, and Bela Lugosi just can't pull it off, I think the Count and Adam Sandler in Hotel Transylvania are way too kind to him as they are nowhere near as silly as Bela Lugosi in Dracula. But I think that most horror fan will agree that Boris Karloff is a better actor, and he is just as well known for his role as human monster as well as Frankenstein’s Monster in movies like the Black Cat and Black Friday. It was his performance in the Black Cat as the cult leader Hjalmar Poelzig, that convinced me he would make a better Dracula than Frankenstein’s Monster, like his look as Frankenstein’s Monster, but is performance just wasn't convincing enough. I think his evil stair and his consuming voice would be better suited for Dracula and some people might remember him more than they did Bela Lugosi.
