That's supposedly the original version. That's the Enterprise prototype Shuttle. The details in both the Shuttle, and carrier have changed over the years.

I would have thought the shuttle would interfer with the airflow.

The scaffolding that holds it in place is raises the Shuttle off a bit off the surface of the plane.
