"Country Life"

A field of canola in full bloom beneath the central band of The Milky Way. Zodiacal light appears to stream upwards from the horizon as the last glow of daylight fades.
To fully experience the magic of the night sky you need to get as far out into the countryside, well away from artificial lights as you can.

This was taken on the 9th of October 2012 shortly before my "Aurora Australis" and "Midnight Rainbow" images.

My heart goes out to all those effected by the terrible tragedy in Connecticut.

I was googling where to go in my area. I live in So California so looks like the desert is about an hour away, and excellent place to go. Just don't get out as much as I should. Your photos a really awe inspiring, as I'm sure you have heard that before.

Brilliant photo. I am beginner of dark sky photoshoot, what is the best time for milky way. A couple days ago, I gave a shot, but it was right above my head, not good perspective

Thank you very much Best time depends on where you live. I see that you are from New Zealand. For us down south this big bright central bulge of the Milky Way is rising in the east in the early hours of the morning at the moment (3am ish). Get a star chart or look up an online star chart and look for the constellations of Scorpius and Sagittarius to work out when and where they are in the sky. A part of the Milky Way is always in the night sky (It's like a big band that goes around the Earth) but the central bulge is the brightest.
