Storm 11th of February, 2012

Managed to capture a departing bolt from this storm that just went past my place.

Edit: The harsh light of day revealled many things with this image I didn't like. The original pic was edited from a jpeg as for some reason I couldn't get the RAW file to convert properly. I think I was just too tired last night. So this updated version is edited from the RAW meaning I have now got much better resolution and less noise, and I'm also happier with the White Balance of the shot.

I've been an active watcher honest!!

I saw this pic on my phone when you first uploaded it but my comment was lost when my battery died. This versions is a huge improvement over the shot, lots less noise and overall more detail is revealed. I'd kill to have a storm like this in my back yard... Seriously, I've tried for YEARS to get lightning captured and I've only managed two crap ones. Sir I tip my cap to you and hope to see even more of these beggars

HaHa. It's cool mate I know you are a very active watcher of mine and it is greatly appreciated. Thanks also for the feedback on this. Yeah I was so disappointed with the first upload of this. It looked ok with my bleary tired eyes but when I saw it in the morning I couldn't believe I had missed how crap it was. I'm glad I was able to improve it.

Excellent timing and capture on this one. Have you been following the news on the latest sunspot? I gather it has been a good one. I saw some pictures of it online, but they were not as good as your stuff.

Looks like positively-charged lightning.

And question, do you use Lightroom? You could easily get rid of the creepy chromatic aberration.

Yep. Positive CG strike. No I don't use lightroom. Got PS CS3. Still learning image processing. It's going to take a lot longer than learning astrophotography I think Thanks for the critique anyway Myriam. I have now fixed it (I think?).

Yowsers! Really? Twice! Wow. I hope they didn't do much damage Ken. The closest I have come to getting hit by lightning was a bolt that struck a building on the opposite side of the road to where I was walking. About 10 metres away.

organblower In reply to CapturingTheNight [2012-02-12 02:20:14 +0000 UTC]

The first time wasn't too bad cost wise because my electronics wasn't the best. Two years later my radio tower (I think) got hit. I was on the phone and was almost deafened with the sound. It took out the TV, A/V receiver DVD player, hand held transceiver and computer. They attempted to repair everything but the TV. They said it blew up because it was old. Purely a coincidence. My ass. Anyway after fiddling and farting with my Denon THX 5.1 receiver for 9 months, I got it back once again and as soon as the volume was turned up, crackle pop snap and distortion so I called insurance company yet again. The adjuster was on holiday so I was turned over to the manager and I told them what I thought of their service. I got a call back in an hour telling me to go to the store. There would be a new one waiting for me. With all the time delays, the model I had was discontinued so they gave me the 7.1 which is a $6,000 receiver. Serves them right

Woo Hooooooo! NOW you're talking my language! What a great bolt to catch! Nice structure in the bolt and forks and well placed in the frame. Those little pieces of cloud crawler at the top of the bolt make it better and better, my friend! I'm certain you're in collusion with Mother Nature to get some great shots But who cares about a little collusion when it makes for some great captures? I'm all for it and think it should spread globally

HaHa I thought you would like this one mate. Thanks Me and mother nature have this nice little understanding going on. I scratch her back and she scratches mine. LOL seriously though- I really have been very lucky with some of the things I have managed to capture and if I knew what it was that I am doing right then I would certainly send a heap of it your way.
