WARNING: NEVER OBSERVE THE SUN WITH THE NAKED EYE OR THROUGH A TELESCOPE, CAMERA OR OTHER OPTICAL DEVICE UNLESS YOU HAVE A PROPER SOLAR FILTER AND KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU ARE DOING.

It has been a fair while since I have had the solar telescope out. I finally have a day off with clear weather. Hope you like it.

I'm drowning in photos at the moment. I have three or four from this morning of Comet Lovejoy that I will post at some point and I also have a close up image of the large prominence at the top of this shot as it erupted off into space a couple of hours after this was taken. And on top of that I have a heap of messages from my second DD to get through and it's Christmas tomorrow. I'm flat out. If you are waiting for a reply please be patient.

HaHa Yeah the camera is fine because I shoot the sun through a specialist solar telescope that makes it very safe to view and image the sun through.

Damn, incredible. It must be lovely to be able to go out and view the sun in such detail.

Goddamn Greg that's incredible!

How did you find imaging the Sun?

It's weird I've seen tons of solar images and always figured them to be beyond "amatuer" imaging, but after seeing you and Kev Lewis do such a great job, its making the whole idea more intriguing.

When you're done with your other messages, could you tell me what the dark lines are across the surface? Solar promenences headed straight at you?

Can't wait to see more of Lovejoy!

knew I forgot to answer one thing....Yes those dark lines are promenences.

Thanks again Ted Furiously trying to clear my message log before I do the whole chrissy family thing.
Do you mean- How did I get into imaging the Sun or How do I find imaging the Sun (Easy or Hard)? Answer to the second part- Easy once you know how and have the right (expensive) equipment. Answer to the second part below-
I'm glad you follow Kev's work. He is the master. I am the apprentice (literally). I was fascinated by his early solar work and knowing that there was a Venus Transit next year I thought that his imaging method and equipment would be a great thing to try. So I picked his brains a bit and he was more than happy to give me some tips and tricks. I bit the bullet and purchased what I needed and have been refining my own technique ever since. Kev has moved on from DSLR imaging to webcam with his solar stuff which is 10 times better, but I'm happy to stick with what i'm doing for a while yet. Basically because I can't afford to spend any more money on astrophotography this year So it's all thanks to Kev. I can take no credit at all for the basic technique behind these shots.
