WARNING: NEVER OBSERVE THE SUN WITH THE NAKED EYE OR THROUGH A TELESCOPE, CAMERA OR OTHER OPTICAL DEVICE UNLESS YOU HAVE A PROPER SOLAR FILTER AND KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU ARE DOING.

Second try at imaging the sun. Set the camera to monochrome mode which made focusing a heap easier. Also tried a different processing technique. Much happier with the colour and how this one looks. Once again this is a blend of two exposures. One for the surface detail and one to bring out the solar prominences around the edge of the sun. Incidentally the prominence at about 2 o'clock on the disc is bigger than the Earth.

*heaps more activity*

So are those "sun spots" that I see there?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

CapturingTheNight In reply to Handie [2011-10-03 01:45:35 +0000 UTC]

Yes. Down the bottom left there are two large ones. The filaments around the edge are solar prominences. Got some huge ones erupting today

So what does that mean to us? Or is this something that is happening all the time? How big is your lens for this??

CapturingTheNight In reply to Handie [2011-10-03 03:14:48 +0000 UTC]

Not a lot really. All normally happening 24/7. Sometimes there is lots of spots and flares but other times it is quieter. If you get a large number of sunspots and flares pointed at the earth you would see an increase in aurora activity and in the most extreme cases, communications and power being effected.

I seem to remember a couple of times when some weird communication things were happening I heard the the "solar flares" theory being passed around!

So is this new for you - shooting the sun? It would be interesting to see behind the scenes on these - not very many people shoot this, I would imagine. I have a friend (well, my business partner, actually) who is planning to make some sort of system that moves the camera so he can shoot the stars. He ordered some machined parts for it but I'm not sure what it's exactly all about. You probably have a pretty good idea what it is.

Yeah it happens from time to time. There was a blackout along the north eastern seaboard of the USA into Canada from memory in the 80's or 90's that was as a result of a massive solar eruption

Pretty new to imaging the sun. Only been doing it for a couple of weeks now. I would be interested in seeing a pic or two of what sort of rig your business partner is building. There are a couple of things I think it could be.

I have no idea - he just told me that he ordered some parts from a guy he saw advertising in a magazine or something and the rest he could make himself out of wood...

Looking forward to your up and coming sun pics!!

Just finished processing it. Very happy with it. I'll let the upload I put up today have it's moment in the spotlight before I upload the next sun picture tomorrow. Stay tuned.

Ah. Wood. That clarifies it. He is most likly making a barndoor tracker. I made one when I first started out before purchasing the expensive telescope and mount. Very nice starting point for an astrophotographer.

Well, if he's having troubles with it I'll direct him to you! Seeing as you are a red hot sun photographer! I'm behind in viewing the dev's in my box. I'll have to look and see if there are more suns there that I missed...

Thank you very much Sandra Wait till you see the shots of the sun I just took. Heaps for activity. Working on them now. Upload probably tomorrow.

I'll post a behind the scenes shot one day. It's basically my astrophotography setup with a different telescope on it.

How incredible! I did not know it was possible to photograph the sun so I've definitely never seen anything like this before. I think I'm pretty smart if I can get a decent shot of the moon LOL

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

CapturingTheNight In reply to MayEbony [2011-09-26 08:52:48 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much It is possible but you need specialist solar equipment and know how to use it properly. DO NOT try with just a standard camera. At best you will ruin your camera, at worst you will go permanently blind.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MayEbony In reply to CapturingTheNight [2011-09-26 13:22:45 +0000 UTC]

I promise!!! Sunsets and sunrises are OK to have the camera look at the sun though because of the angle through the something-osphere? Stratosphere?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

CapturingTheNight In reply to MayEbony [2011-09-26 19:56:02 +0000 UTC]

Good to hear. Yeah you can get away with it at sunset and sunrises due to the increased atmosphere but you still need to be careful.

I don't think I've ever seen an actual photo of the sun like this Both tries turned out great, though this one looks much better with the detailed texture and such
