WARNING: NEVER OBSERVE THE SUN WITH THE NAKED EYE OR THROUGH A TELESCOPE, CAMERA OR OTHER OPTICAL DEVICE UNLESS YOU HAVE A PROPER SOLAR FILTER AND KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU ARE DOING.

This is my first proper try at imaging the sun through my Coronado PST (Personal Solar Telescope). It is a blend of two exposures. One for the surface detail and one for the faint solar prominances around the edge. You should be able to make out a number of sunspots across the surface. Seeing was not the best as there was a bit of wind about and the sun was getting low on the horizon.

This is very much a beginner shot. I know this is not very good at all but I hope to get much better at this over the coming months leading up to the solar eclipse and Venus transit next year.

I need to give a huge shout out to He is the master at this sort of thing. He has helped me greatly with advice to get to this stage. If you like this, do yourself a favour and checkout his awesome work.

Fantastic! I like that there is so much detail in it...I guess I expected a yellow disc with not much detail but this glowing orb has nice surface detail and maybe even a sunspot on the left. Nice work!

Good first light Greg

probably worth looking at using flats to reduce some of the gradients visible or something like the GradientXterminator plugin for PS.

I'd be well happy with this a first image Welcome to the light side of astrophotography.

Wow. To think that you don't need a NASA-probe to make such a photo. That is just incredible.

So is it because of the equipment you use the sun is all yellow or is it really all yellow. NASA photos most of the time show the sun as a mosly red with a small amount of yellow. So does it depend on the equipment that is used or is there some other reason for the sun being a different color? I really like the photo a lot.

CapturingTheNight In reply to Gem-of-cali [2011-09-23 09:49:17 +0000 UTC]

Thanks The colour is dependent on me. The scope I use is a Hydrogen Alpha scope which is really red to the eye/camera. It is best to capture in mono (black and white) and then put a colour layer over the image. Most people associate the sun with yellow so I tried to get a pleasing yellow colour. I hope to refine my colour process over time. I'm not entirely happy with how this looks.

Gem-of-cali In reply to CapturingTheNight [2011-09-23 09:52:10 +0000 UTC]

That helps. So maybe that is what NASA does. Add a color, I mean. They even had a blue sun in one picture they had.

CapturingTheNight In reply to Gem-of-cali [2011-09-23 09:56:10 +0000 UTC]

Different filters can produce different wavelengths of light. I know you can image with a Calcium filter as well and I think that one is blue.

LOL well it gives ya something to look at during the day...

plus anytime I get to visually study a plasma ball in action (especially one of that magnitude) it's a bonus.
