Description This is my first ever serious attempt at a model in Maya, as well as my first ever attempt at animating in Maya. It was a pretty big step to take in one go, but I found it surprisingly easy and a lot of fun . It was done for a project. I'm definitely going to experiment in Maya during the summer, who knows in a while I may even be able to take modelling/animation commissions!

Things I would do better next time is the frame rate, as the animation doesn't quite run as smoothly as it could, and I'd take more time working on the texture. Of course my overall modelling and animating skills need a lot of work, but for a very first time I'm pretty pleased with the result . It was a lot of fun anyway!

Art by me, *Dragoness77 .

great job! i just got maya myself. i learned how to model and animate on softimage, so the crossover should be fun :-P
one thing i do notice is that some of your polygons in the back corner of the wings (by the corners of the tail feathers) seem to be crashing into one another during the animation. Does it look like that when you do a full render?

CaraidArt In reply to HeatherHitchman [2011-06-09 21:58:03 +0000 UTC]

Indeed they do, and I suspect that it's a skin weight issue. I hand painted the skin weight to the joints and I may have missed a few vertexes or crossed them for different joints which resulted in conflicting movement.. I'll have to delve into that when I experiment with it further. Thanks!

Dude, for a rough animation, this is better then most! I like how you made sure to add the curve on the uplift of the wings and my only complaint is the thickness of the body. I understand shoulders and shoulder/wing fuzz but it just looks like a pancake from above.

CaraidArt In reply to through-the-monsoon [2011-06-09 21:50:23 +0000 UTC]

Lol you're absolutely right, I wasn't too satisfied with the shape of the body either, but I didn't have too much time left for the project so I couldn't refine it much. That, and I was happy enough that it somewhat resembled a bird haha, I was so excited that I wanted to continue texturing asap ^^.

two thumbs up.
study animals on youtube to better understand the wings movement.

but looks great

CaraidArt In reply to ChristopherOnciu [2011-06-09 21:55:34 +0000 UTC]

I did, but there weren't too many nice slow-motion videos of flying birds that provided a good reference. I had to make do with what there was, not to mention I didn't have too much time to study them! My project buddies needed an animated model asap. I'm definitely going to work on improving the motion to look more natural on future models though.

I like the feathers. How exactly did you make them? And how do you get the bones to have different shapes? o.O

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CaraidArt In reply to SelenaRH [2011-06-09 21:53:46 +0000 UTC]

The feathers are part of the wireframe, I don't remember exactly although I think I extruded the edges of the wing and merged vertexes together to create a flat shape .

Wow this is pretty good and amazing for your first shot with maya! I am definitely going to take that class when I get a chance, you have inspired me to look into 3d animation. I do a lot of 2d animations at my school, but I don't have the programs at home so unfortunately, no one gets to see them except for my professor and a few students. This is great though! I see what you are saying about frame rates and the slight choppiness it has, but I think you'll get the hang of it in a couple more tries. Good luck I can't wait to see more. I'd definitely commission you for a 3d piece once you feel comfortable doing them.

Nice work One thing I noticed was that the ascent of the wings could be a tad more delayed, they move up a little too fast compared to the rest of the movement

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CaraidArt In reply to Rasmanisar [2011-06-09 21:52:40 +0000 UTC]

Thanks . I know the movement isn't exactly perfect, but I'll definitely work on that on future models.

You should check out the BBC video gallery, if you haven't done so already. They have tons of animal videos that you can use for animation reference! I know that's where I go when I need a reference. The animation isn't bad at all.

I had to do something similar for one of the Playstation Home spaces. I mentioned that I know rigging and animation (to a degree), and the supervising artist asked if I would model, texture, rig, and animate a bird! I don't mind rigging, its actually my fave 3D thing to do. But I don't consider my a great model, texture, or animation artist. But I some how pulled it off, and the resulting flock of birds flying in one of the Home apartments made me really proud!

Keep up the fantastic work! If you're modeling, rigging, and animation skills turn out as great as your 2D artwork, you'll go far!

Very nice work Lhune ^^ I was just wondering the other day if you were planning on ever delving back into animation like you did with the Lhune walk cycle and the little alien who's name I forgot. Glad to see it!

Out of curiosity, about how long did this take you?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CaraidArt In reply to Valthecon [2011-06-08 19:13:47 +0000 UTC]

Hehe, well the last 2D animation I did was the deer of course . Not too long ago. 3D animation is something quite different though, it's both easier and more complex at the same time haha. It's less time consuming/painstaking I suppose but more difficult to figure out initially.

All in all I think this must have taken me about 6-8 hours.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Valthecon In reply to CaraidArt [2011-06-08 19:18:51 +0000 UTC]

I forgot all about the deer, I'm sorry!

6-8 hours isn't that bad. I've got new plans to try my hand at animation (after I get my head around the human figure of course ) so I've been asking around to try and get some more ideas about what it takes to do it. Thanks!

Hey, ik heb die vraag eerder gehad maar heel eerlijk gezegd weet ik niet eens wat dat betekent . Bedoel je dat de texture transparant is?

Bedankt!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CG-Sphinx In reply to CaraidArt [2011-06-08 19:59:13 +0000 UTC]

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CaraidArt In reply to CG-Sphinx [2011-06-09 21:51:48 +0000 UTC]

Ahhh op die manier . Nee, de veren zijn gewoon onderdeel van het wireframe. In totaal zijn 't 738 tris.
