Description This is my first ever serious attempt at a model in Maya, as well as my first ever attempt at animating in Maya. It was a pretty big step to take in one go, but I found it surprisingly easy and a lot of fun . It was done for a project. I'm definitely going to experiment in Maya during the summer, who knows in a while I may even be able to take modelling/animation commissions!

Things I would do better next time is the frame rate, as the animation doesn't quite run as smoothly as it could, and I'd take more time working on the texture. Of course my overall modelling and animating skills need a lot of work, but for a very first time I'm pretty pleased with the result . It was a lot of fun anyway!

Art by me, *Dragoness77 .

Nice! Do the wings fold in?

Similar to how any bird does it really, the bones would just be pulled close to the body. It didn't look quite as good because the wireframe would be a little squashed, but that was the idea. Thank you!

Very nice^^ I don't really know much about it, but I like it. I hope it is okay if I use some moves from perspective to perspective for my own animation project (for school)?

Sorry for any english mistakes~

Not at all, go ahead. Though be sure to study actual films of birds flying as well, you can't really go wrong there .

Perhaps I will have to try out maya....

Planning on doing any other models? c:

Perhaps . For a while I considered doing 3D commissions but I have the student version of Maya and I'm really not that experienced yet..

I have been trying out Blender, and I think I am getting pretty good with it, maybe I can offer advice? Though I think you are better then I am currently xD

Great 'attempt'(you say anyway) at animation, just a little pointer;
Do some studies of how an eagle/bird flies with its wings and the movements in there, 'cause they tend to be more substantial and deeper, with their back muscles visibly moving, and a little bit of a shift in the chest from the muscles there working.
Otherwise, its really good for a first go, I know a couple of people who've tried to do something like this on their first go and completely flopped it, well done (:

Thanks; I did in fact study bird movement, but it was hard to find a good video of eagles or other predators flying in such a pace that it was a good reference. I ended up with some pretty good swan and duck videos but they do fly differently :<.

Thank you!

how did you model in maya? i can't figure out how to start even rendering/modeling it it, yet i can figure out the animation

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CaraidArt In reply to Ryzakier [2011-09-30 10:49:41 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, I don't actually know how I could possibly explain that to you xD. Just make sure Maya is set to "Polygons" and play around with the various shapes to create what you're going for. Look up tuts on how to transform the basic shapes, there are plenty of them online . Good luck!

If you do more animating, look up how to use the curve editor. It's the most handy tool to make really smooth animation. 'Tis awesome.

This is absolutely amazing and awesome! Great job! I hope to do this stuff someday and I'm working towards it in school. For your first model and animation, this is just wonderful and the flying is way smooth enough. Sure it could be better, but man, I'm just blown away. You just accomplished a way better animation than over HALF the CGI I see in B movies, cartoons, and etc on TV these days. I look forward to seeing more of this and, well, pretty much any artwork you do!

You can animate a bird flying much better than some professionals.
