Description
A couple of days ago, I came across this --> [link] on the front page, which led me to discover the wonderfully faily vampire-artist of *vert-is-ninja 's online comic, 'Hanna Is Not A Boy's Name.' Conrad Achenleck (his last name always reminds me of the sound of someone taking the safety off a pistol) absolutely possesses every quality that normally attracts me to a character--namely transformation and plenty of angst--so of course I dreamed up a comic on the spot. Then, however, I stopped for a moment, and said to myself: "Self--you know that the odds of you ever actually doing such a comic are zero out of one hundred. Instead, you should draw only one of its panels, one that is accessible to someone who does not know anything about this story in your head."So here is Conrad at the end of my little tale, finishing a fresh dinner that someone has very thoughtfully provided. Aw, Conrad. You're so faily we can hardly even see your fangs, but you look all cute and peaceful now that you've eaten. 'Course, it's important to lick the bowl clean...
I used the methods *vert-is-ninja details in her tutorial to do this piece. There are a few flaws, but I think I emulated the style okay. And wow, the backgrounds are so quick and easy in comparison to how I normally do backgrounds that there should be a law against it; that's how easy they are.
It was a really welcome change to draw in such a cartoony style for once
I don't really need to mature this for blood, do I? ....If you're offended, it's totally tomato soup, 'kay? Totally.

For some reason, this is strangely adorable.
I think we all like to think of Conrad as a messy eater, I've seen it done a few times, but the way you've done it is a little piece of brilliance.
Haha, he looks so happy.
Wonderful work, totally faving.

I'd like to see those other interpretations. Did you fave them too? I might have to take a run thru your favorites...
It just seems in Conrad's nature to always be in a mess of some sort, although I'm sure he'll learn to be neater eventually. He just needs some practice...although bowls are inherently messier, I think. He needs a spoon. But if he had one then he wouldn't look like a cat lapping at its food. Hm. Conundrum.
You're happy too when you finally get food after a long time without eating, right? I know I am! Thanks for the comment
I appreciate it.

This is the one I know I faved: [link]
He'll figure out how to eat his food right sooner or later. At least he doesn't play with it. XD
You're very welcome!

I want Conrad to get to be a badass vampire in the comics, before they end, one time. Just one. Is it too much to ask...?
Maybe.

BUUUUHHHH, EET EES SO GUUUUD~
Just so you know, Conrad only has one fang. It's a little bit hard to notice, since your brain wants to fill in the second, but he really only has one, the little loser~
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Caretaker-of-Myth In reply to Mary-Garden [2010-05-02 20:48:16 +0000 UTC]
Nah, he's got two--check out this strip: [link] Or at least, he's got enough to pass for another fang; you know how anime typically draws characters with little "fangs" when they're angry or smiling widely anyway. I just think of it this way: He's got two fangs, but only one is really big enough to notice most of the time
I think I ran across a comment somewhere saying that that was the case, but I can't remember where now...

I did want it to stand out, so it's on top of the texture layer. But yeah, perhaps I should have used a brush for that.
I'm far from thinking I have her style down though XD

I never really thought that I had my own, to be honest. Maybe the sort of generic animu that's been cropping up in my gallery recently, but honestly, my gallery runs the "cartoon" gamut. I'm a style mimic

awright ; v;
some people are getting so annoyed with all of Ms. Stone's emulators, so just warning you.
I do that too, but it doesn't count for me, because I'm not a very good artist.
yet

Caretaker-of-Myth In reply to PandaBearPaige13 [2010-05-02 20:31:12 +0000 UTC]
Annoyed? Huh. As for me, I don't emulate for popularity (I'm not a very popular artist) but because when I want to portray a character I like, I want to draw them the way they actually look. (I did try Conrad in my generic anime style and he looked all boring and bland. XD) It's pretty tough for me, too, and involves all sorts of geometry and study, lol. Her style is pretty variable in itself, too--makes it even tougher!
But in the end, if the character looks "right" to me--and I'm picky--that's all that matters. I don't care if anybody gets annoyed with me.

Geometry!? ; .; That's pretty damn .... *lack of words*
Yeah, her style does change... In the comics, just me or does the zombie keep getting more... ;3;
amazing. yeah, we'll go with that word.
I'm glad you don't care, that must make it pretty easy

Caretaker-of-Myth In reply to PandaBearPaige13 [2010-05-02 21:00:37 +0000 UTC]
It's more a matter of: "The line that makes the nose is about the size of the width of one pane of the glasses; hairline here is nearly adjacent to the forehead," etc., etc. But with a variable style those things change, which makes it tougher. Actually I really admire people like Tessa who can just draw and not care too much about that. Using geometric methods can allow you to draw a character 'accurately' but I always feel it leaves my drawings wooden.
He does.
It's liberating. I should add one exception though--if it upsets the original creator. Then I might feel a little bad.
