Description
He hates his lucid moments, because then he feels the pain of what he is.--
...Inspector Gadget sat on the edge of his bed, staring at his hands. There was a clarity in his eyes that Penny had never seen before. Not since the operation, at least. As she watched, the tips of her uncle's fingers opened, revealing just a few of his many gadgets: a pencil, corkscrew, and lighter among them. Penny watched with wide eyes: She had never witnessed her uncle control his gadgets with such quiet finesse. Maybe it had something to do with the odd look in his eyes...
She was about to say something, but before she could, she heard her uncle mutter to himself.
"...Stupid gadgets..."
And now, suddenly, Penny could tell he was quietly crying.
Gadget stared at his hands--or rather, his gadgets. Scissors, syringe, lockpick--all very useful, everything someone could ever want, right here at his fingertips. Except fingertips. Except the most important things of all.
He couldn't feel. He couldn't touch. Though normal to the eye, inside his gloves his hands were hollow shells. What he wouldn't give to be able to run his fingers through his niece's hair, and feel it again. What he wouldn't give to feel the warmth of her hands as they hugged...
"...Stupid gadgets," he muttered, sniffing. He'd been crying for some time now; at least he was still human enough for that. Tears dripped onto his gloves, and he felt a slight tugging in his head as his hat flipped open to reveal one of his many hands, helpfully holding a tissue. It prodded his shoulder gently, offering its gift. He ignored it.
'Gadget,' he thought. ''That's all I am...gadgets. Even my name, now...' He paused, blinking away the tears. 'God, if there is a Hell, it must be like this...'
He hates his lucid moments, because then he feels the pain of what he is.
--
Sorry for the overwrought scene. I was compelled. I tried to make this piece fairly sophisticated, despite the (once again) lame background...
I wanted to see something like this done with Gadget, so I did it. I'm not too familiar with the cartoon; in the cartoon he probably can feel, but logically I don't think he'd be able to, and I think that would cause a normal person a lot of grief. Then I got to wondering whether his tendency not to notice important things could be interpreted as a defense mechanism to keep him oblivious to the full impact of the change that's been wrought on him; hence this picture. I'm not sure how I feel about the mechanical hand--it adds somewhat of an air of humor to the otherwise serious piece, so I left it in. I'm totally in favor of seeing dark/angsty Gadget, but I like the dash of the old cartoon feel with it too.

Pink-Fucking perfect
Made a wrong turn
Once or twice
Dug my way out
Blood and fire
Bad decisions
That's alright
Welcome to my silly life
Mistreated, misplaced, missundaztood
Miss "no way it's all good"
It didn't slow me down
Mistaken
Always second guessing
Underestimated
Look, I'm still around...
Pretty, pretty please
Don't you ever, ever feel
Like your less than
Fuckin' perfect
Pretty, pretty please
If you ever, ever feel
Like your nothing
You're fuckin' perfect to me
You're so mean
When you talk
About yourself
You are wrong
Change the voices
In your head
Make them like you
Instead
So complicated
Look how big you'll make it
Filled with so much hatred
Such a tired game
It's enough
I've done all I can think of
Chased down all my demons
See you same
Pretty, pretty please
Don't you ever, ever feel
Like your less than
Fuckin' perfect
Pretty, pretty please
If you ever, ever feel
Like your nothing
You're fuckin' perfect to me
The world stares while i swallow the fear
The only thing I should be drinking is an ice cold beer
So cool in lying and I tried tried
But we try too hard, it's a waste of my time
Done looking for the critics, cuz they're everywhere
They don't like my genes, they don't get my hair
Stringe ourselves and we do it all the time
Why do we do that?
Why do I do that?
Why do I do that?
Ooh, pretty pretty pretty
Pretty pretty please don't you ever ever feel
Like you're less then, fuckin' perfect
Pretty pretty please if you ever ever feel
Like you're nothing you're fuckin' perfect, to me
You're perfect
You're perfect
Pretty, pretty please don't you ever ever feel like you're less then, fucking perfect
Pretty, pretty please if you ever ever feel like You're nothing you're fucking perfect to me

this actually reminds me of that part from the Doctor Who episode, Age Of Steel where when the emotional anhibitors of the cybermen get deactivated and there's a cyberman that at the mirror and starts crying, truly terrifying.

Well, I'll also wish this kind of introspective-pondering scenes could have happened in the series, too... but actually, it can't, even if it is to badΒ Β .
To be clear, all plots and characters in this series were only shown as plain cartoony-characters, with no real feelings and emotions -and by the way, I've never found the cartoon-style-jokes that funny in this show, as they were to much more repetitives -each episodes seeming to follows the sames twist-plot again and again -really depressive, in my point of view .
(And to add things worse, I was reallyΒ unimpressedΒ each time the inspector's young nephew, Penny (Sophie, in french) get abducted by the villains -in nearly each episodes, this happens - and each time she don't/won't even try to kick that hard nor really bites her aggressors, even if it could be useless, it's matter of survival instinct, anyway - "Come-on little girl, stop being as good as gold for this time being, as your life is endangered, you should know ? -And by the way, no more ritalins for you, etc..." -that should be the moral conclusion advice of this fictive episodeΒ Β .
That was my feeling of the dayΒ Β . Thanks to this more "positive" vision on the original serie.Β Β

I have to beg to differ on your opinion of Penny. She DID fight back against her captors. Case and point, in "Health Spa," she bit gilet kidnapped hard enough that he yanked his hand back, and in "Did You Myth Me," she evaded capture completely, despite being seen. I don't know what episodes you were watching, because Penny Gadget was not the good little damsel you seem to think she was.

Most episodes when it first aired, in french languages. ( Maybe the voice acting didn't help that fact ?).
Well of course, there is some exceptions of "breaking the rules" such as this episode where the inspector himself was put in real troubles tied on some factory mad-machine, and this time it's both the child and the dog who save the day.
Β But, I assume I was young enough the first time I saw this series to be rather negatively impressed by some "plays always the same roles" gimmick in most episodes I saw.
- plus Penny was nearly the sole character to be not that cartoonish as all the other were : So, put her repetitively in danger of upcomming and violent death by some tricky ways, and it seems actually far rather disturbing than funny as if it was Inspector Gadget or some random goofy character in the same role.

Silver-Warrior-Wolf In reply to Kakhi-dot-dot-dot [2016-07-10 17:26:00 +0000 UTC]
I'll give you that. Penny was constantly in danger, and did seem to be the only character constantly placed in that danger. What I was objecting to was the idea that she was helplessly giving into it, instead of fighting with every ounce of strength.
I also agree the formulaic nature of the show did get rather repetitive after a while. There was the potential for an excellent series of there was continuity and the exploration of others roles and situations. Sadly, the the advent of Gadget 2015, I suspect older audiences will have to settle with fan fiction.

Actually, this owes a lot more to the 1999 movie than the cartoon.
In the 1999 movie, this was pretty much John Brown's reaction to being turned into Inspector Gadget. In fact, he was a lot less sedate: he ran away from the operation room, screaming at the top of his lungs and shooting out several gadgets, and he had to be pacified by Dr. Brenda Bradford (the scientist who turned him into Inspector Gadget in the first place).

I remember that movie. I disagree with the idea about what this piece "owes" to anything, though. As you say, in that movie he was mainly just panicky and comical about it. I'd argue that this is quite different. (Also, the movie version didn't seem quite as oblivious to a lot of things as the cartoon version.)
