Description
He hates his lucid moments, because then he feels the pain of what he is.--
...Inspector Gadget sat on the edge of his bed, staring at his hands. There was a clarity in his eyes that Penny had never seen before. Not since the operation, at least. As she watched, the tips of her uncle's fingers opened, revealing just a few of his many gadgets: a pencil, corkscrew, and lighter among them. Penny watched with wide eyes: She had never witnessed her uncle control his gadgets with such quiet finesse. Maybe it had something to do with the odd look in his eyes...
She was about to say something, but before she could, she heard her uncle mutter to himself.
"...Stupid gadgets..."
And now, suddenly, Penny could tell he was quietly crying.
Gadget stared at his hands--or rather, his gadgets. Scissors, syringe, lockpick--all very useful, everything someone could ever want, right here at his fingertips. Except fingertips. Except the most important things of all.
He couldn't feel. He couldn't touch. Though normal to the eye, inside his gloves his hands were hollow shells. What he wouldn't give to be able to run his fingers through his niece's hair, and feel it again. What he wouldn't give to feel the warmth of her hands as they hugged...
"...Stupid gadgets," he muttered, sniffing. He'd been crying for some time now; at least he was still human enough for that. Tears dripped onto his gloves, and he felt a slight tugging in his head as his hat flipped open to reveal one of his many hands, helpfully holding a tissue. It prodded his shoulder gently, offering its gift. He ignored it.
'Gadget,' he thought. ''That's all I am...gadgets. Even my name, now...' He paused, blinking away the tears. 'God, if there is a Hell, it must be like this...'
He hates his lucid moments, because then he feels the pain of what he is.

Sorry for the overwrought scene. I was compelled. I tried to make this piece fairly sophisticated, despite the (once again) lame background...
I wanted to see something like this done with Gadget, so I did it. I'm not too familiar with the cartoon; in the cartoon he probably can feel, but logically I don't think he'd be able to, and I think that would cause a normal person a lot of grief. Then I got to wondering whether his tendency not to notice important things could be interpreted as a defense mechanism to keep him oblivious to the full impact of the change that's been wrought on him; hence this picture. I'm not sure how I feel about the mechanical hand--it adds somewhat of an air of humor to the otherwise serious piece, so I left it in. I'm totally in favor of seeing dark/angsty Gadget, but I like the dash of the old cartoon feel with it too.

Well done. I often forget that technicly he's artificial now, and I have to admit it makes me wonder what that is like.

This is BEAUTIFUL. Both the artwork and the snippet of fanfic along with it. I have this weird need to make things deeper than they seem, and I had troubles in my mind with Inspector Gadget... but gawd, this is beautiful. I wouldn't have ever thought about his lack of a sense of touch, but it's so perfect.
I would have faved the drawing without the writing, and vice versa, so both together is an obvious .

Thanks ^_^
Yeah, I tend to make things deeper than they should be...and usually fixate on things involving mental and emotional trauma, and sometimes physical...adjustments. And I try to find fanfics that do the same; I'm addicted to them XD
Thanks again!

Hey nice^^. I loved the story that came along with the picture. It shows his human side. Touch is integral part of experiencing reality. Things he might have loved doing are 'out of reach', like hugging Penny or maybe even patting Brian. I'd imagine one of his goals right before his accident would have to retire from the detective game and look after a young penny after her parents were killed. After the operation he would have have been more capable to track down criminals and the murderers of Penny's parents. He has all these wonderous tools and amazing abilities to help him as a detective but the question remains...if he could...would he trade all these things for a normal life again? I think the answer to that question would be an astounding Yes.

Good story. Will you be writing more Inspector Gadget fan fiction in the future?
If you want some Inspector Gadget refernces, there's a ton of clips and episodes of it on YouTube.

Sadly, probably not--I do get flashes of scenes in my head, but nothing really substantial.
I've started watching them! It'd be hard to sift through all the episodes to see if I could find something related to him being able to feel, though...

Here ([link] ) he acts like he gets hurt. In the context of your story, you could say he's just acting hurt out of habit and the need to feel normal.

Haha, yes, or perhaps just totally ignore that! That certainly seems easiest, but also somewhat of a cop-out. Then again, in the cartoon he cuts himself through his glove...lol.
It's interesting to think about the extent of the damage that happened to Gadget to make him what he is, how much human vs. mechanical parts he has in himself, etc. The movie did better than the cartoon at portraying that, definitely--I've never been able to imagine how slipping on a banana peel might create extensive injuries, unless it made one fall off a twelve-story building, so I'm not sure which one I'd be true to. I've pretty much decided his head is pretty much all human, though--although where is his brain kept? I'm pretty sure he can't keep both his Copter and his many arms, magnifying glass and other gadgets just in his hat! So his skull has to be involved somehow...
Interesting things to think about!

Indeed. I always thought that his absent-mindedness came from losing working memory to having all the mechanical parts replacing some of his brain.
Perhaps he can only sense pain? You would think that the scientists would put in some sort of a damage avoidance system..."Oh, hey, my hand's on fire!"

Wowsers! Awesome words and picture.
The same thoughts went across my mind about the whole defence mechanism theory, like maybe he's not entirely dumb, he just insists on believing exactly what he wants to believe and doesn't stop to face reality because he represses it. Like made up his a fantasy world where everythings okay even if it's not just to stay happy all the time.
Everyone I know would think I was totally nuts if they knew how deep I look into stuff like this XD
