Description
He hates his lucid moments, because then he feels the pain of what he is.--
...Inspector Gadget sat on the edge of his bed, staring at his hands. There was a clarity in his eyes that Penny had never seen before. Not since the operation, at least. As she watched, the tips of her uncle's fingers opened, revealing just a few of his many gadgets: a pencil, corkscrew, and lighter among them. Penny watched with wide eyes: She had never witnessed her uncle control his gadgets with such quiet finesse. Maybe it had something to do with the odd look in his eyes...
She was about to say something, but before she could, she heard her uncle mutter to himself.
"...Stupid gadgets..."
And now, suddenly, Penny could tell he was quietly crying.
Gadget stared at his hands--or rather, his gadgets. Scissors, syringe, lockpick--all very useful, everything someone could ever want, right here at his fingertips. Except fingertips. Except the most important things of all.
He couldn't feel. He couldn't touch. Though normal to the eye, inside his gloves his hands were hollow shells. What he wouldn't give to be able to run his fingers through his niece's hair, and feel it again. What he wouldn't give to feel the warmth of her hands as they hugged...
"...Stupid gadgets," he muttered, sniffing. He'd been crying for some time now; at least he was still human enough for that. Tears dripped onto his gloves, and he felt a slight tugging in his head as his hat flipped open to reveal one of his many hands, helpfully holding a tissue. It prodded his shoulder gently, offering its gift. He ignored it.
'Gadget,' he thought. ''That's all I am...gadgets. Even my name, now...' He paused, blinking away the tears. 'God, if there is a Hell, it must be like this...'
He hates his lucid moments, because then he feels the pain of what he is.
--
Sorry for the overwrought scene. I was compelled. I tried to make this piece fairly sophisticated, despite the (once again) lame background...
I wanted to see something like this done with Gadget, so I did it. I'm not too familiar with the cartoon; in the cartoon he probably can feel, but logically I don't think he'd be able to, and I think that would cause a normal person a lot of grief. Then I got to wondering whether his tendency not to notice important things could be interpreted as a defense mechanism to keep him oblivious to the full impact of the change that's been wrought on him; hence this picture. I'm not sure how I feel about the mechanical hand--it adds somewhat of an air of humor to the otherwise serious piece, so I left it in. I'm totally in favor of seeing dark/angsty Gadget, but I like the dash of the old cartoon feel with it too.

Ah, so I'm not the only one who thinks that Gadget acts so distracted and all because he hasn't been very clear since being turned into a cyborg.

Awww, poor Gadget. Someone bake this guy a nice big birthday cake, even if it isn't his birthday. And a subscription to "Popular Science"...some scientists are working on artificial hands that CAN feel things.

Good grief, I never considered this. Then again, I haven't thought of the series in years. But not being able to feel when you pet a cat or shake someones hand, only sensing that you're touching something...that would be hell.

NOW THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT!!!
I've been a real fan of the original series forever (and I mean forever.), and always lamented how the series was little more than just a simple kid's show, when really, it could have been so much more. I suppose it was because of the restrictive nature of the ratings and censors of the timeβ¦
Anyway, I think this raises a very interesting question, and makes for a very compelling story! It's all about verisimilitude, and I really think you understand how to make him cooler without making him dark and edgy! Even if you've never even seen the show!
If they were to make a revival series, they should totally explore this concept!

I'm always amazed at the pretty consistent flow of favorites and views this piece gets. I think it's the most viewed piece in my gallery! I guess it's testament to the spread of fans this show gets, and the nostalgia it left behind. I wasn't a kid myself when it aired, so I've only seen it on Youtube. It's nice to see people looking back at it though and viewing it through a more adult lens.
And yeah...Gadget doesn't necessarily need to be darker to be more adult. He just needs a little more depth, more difficulties that come from other sources besides Dr. Claw. As far as I can recall, he mostly had it pretty easy in that department, so he was always cheerful and comedic. More varied emotional depth could fix that right up into something more profound for all those who remember Gadget nostalgically

What can I say, I'm impressed!
The fanfic puts into words the one thing that always kind of nagged at me about this show... not at the time (all a Kid cares about is "cool, gadgets!" and "this is funny!"), but later when I was older and occasionally thought back on the show.
Keep up the good work.

Shameless plug time: If you like to read about the trials and tribulations of Gadget as a true cyborg, read my fanfic 'EuroGadget'.

Just read it (alright, read it a little while back; it's just taken me a while to respond XD) and enjoyed it. It's very plausible as a sequel and certainly better than the sequel that did come out. I particularly enjoyed your handling of the morals as well as the drawings. You don't often see girls who draw that way--in sort of a 'comic book'/realism style; I mostly find it's the guys on DA who do that, so it was actually really refreshing.

So glad you enjoyed it!
It was the longest story I'd ever written, and took me over a year to finally get down on paper.
Also,I'm a comics artist from way back, so that's just the way I draw all the time.

I always thought of what it would be like to be in Gadget's shoes. Sure I'd have all the adventures I'd want and cool gadgets to work with. But upon seeing this I realize that I couldn't feel at ease with my body being something that couldn't work by it self. I couldn't rest knowing that the only thing keeping me alive was a machean. Or what I was. I never thought about not being able to feel something touch my fingertips again. Though most of the time they're numb (Due to poor curculation) I am greatful when I actualy CAN feel. The feel of the laptop key board or the feel of stroking my cat... for Gadget. He is a real hero and deserves this 100 times over.
That and he makes us laugh...

I'd really like for them to make some sort of show that examines this aspect, but unfortunately that's not the premise of his character....there's lots of good stuff that depicts him in this way on DA though! ^_^
