Description
I took Japanese in high school and was part of the Japanese Club for a while. This club did very little except sit around and watch anime, play Gamecube games, and play Yu-Gi-Oh. Occasionally, though, we would do “official” activities. There was a contest for drawings or paintings of Japanese anime or video game characters, and I decided to enter with a drawing of my old favorites Sonic and Tails. I tried to capture the look and feel of the old Genesis games. This drawing won second place in the club contest and hung on the wall of the Japanese classroom for a while.Sometime after I reclaimed the drawing, I attended a cartooning workshop by Portland cartoonist Steve Lieber. We were told in advance to bring portfolios of our work and I threw this entry into mine. Mr. Lieber was generous enough to go through each of our portfolios individually and give us feedback. I remember that with this particular drawing, he commented on how the structures in the background looked very flat and it would be improved if I learned to draw buildings and such in perspective. And he was right, although I could argue that the flatness adds to the “Genesis” feel.

This is how Sonic's world was drawn in the earliest issues of his comic, but now ....

Thanks. The rest of the picture came out pretty flat, so I'm glad that part worked.

Very nice picture. Looks exactly like those old promo pictures I only saw thanks to "Sonic Gems Collection." Everything looks just like it did back in the old days (I especially like the old Badniks).
In a slightly unrelated note, that Japanese class of yours sounds like it was the best thing ever.

Thanks. That's a compliment because I really liked those old promo pictures. They all used to be easily accessible online but I can't seem to find them anymore. Maybe I'm not looking hard enough.
I was fortunate just to have a Japanese class. They're not as common as I thought.
...And I totally squandered the opportunity because I think I have forgotten everything I ever learned there. It got pretty bad the third year, with the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year students all crammed in one room. After that I didn't want to study Japanese anymore.

If you really wanna find those old promos, get "Sonic Gems Collection" if you don't already have it. It has scads and scads of old-school and new-school art and it has games like "Sonic CD" to boot...well, "CD" happens to be the highest point but it has one or two other good games like "Vectorman" and "Vectorman 2." The only downside I can think of (besides billions of Gamegear games you might never look at) is that you need to unlock all of this artwork.
As for your Japanese class, I hear you about not remembering anything. It seems that I can only remember what I learn when I need it for a test. After I'm done that class I rarely retain what I'm supposed to learn. I remember that in the last Spanish class I had to take I fell asleep EVERY day for most, if not all of the class despite sitting near the front row. I somehow passed but, as you might guess, I don't remember a thing.

I wish people wouldn't be so quick to forget Tails can airlift Sonic. I love this pic. It's a good reminder of his true talent.
Nice job on 2nd place. I did a similar pic but it's horrible compared to thos. The flatness does make it look more oldschool btw.

Thanks. I think they forget because Tails is rarely shown airlifting Sonic anymore. Correct me if I’m wrong, because I haven’t been keeping up with the recent games. But in Sonic X, I noticed that Tails barely seemed to fly at all.

No that's pretty much correct. They're ignorring his true talent, it's ridiculous, and Sonic X is just... horrible! I wish we had some decent material instead of a genius using mechs all the time. He might as well not have his second tail if he isn't even going to use it.

I love the level of detail in this! Beautiful picture!
Love the sense of co-operation between my favourite videogame duo, too!
I like the old-school style, though if I'm honest, I like some aspects of the new designs too... the coloured irises. I feel eyes are the important feature of a character.
Drawing Sonic in the old-school style, but with the green eyes would make it perfect for me.

Thank you. The sense of cooperation and companionship is exactly what I was going for.
I agree with your opinion on eyes. I really like pretty and/or expressive eyes. Having colored eyes makes the characters look more interesting and "alive."
I noticed something a little odd about the way I drew Sonic's spines. They look kind of droopy, like new Sonic, rather than sticking up, like old-school Sonic. Oh well.

(I love how many different aspects of the game you managed to get in the background, so much to take in)
Japanese classes!? WHY ARE ENGLISH SCHOOLS SO SHIT!!!! if we had even suggested Japanese classes or a Japanese club we'd have been laughed right out of the door...
but never mind, at least I'm learning now... just about...
