Description I drew this doodle on the back of an envelope last night. Today I scanned it and added colour in Photoshop.

Hmm.

I always loved the first issue of The Incredible Hulk. I loved Kirby's original design. Just a big... HULK. Not all veiny and muscley like some steroid-pumped weight-lifter freak. He was a huge, chunky oaf of a thing.

Frankenstein's monster crossed with Mr Hyde.

I loved how he was a subtle greenish grey. And how his torn clothing still hung off him.

And more to the point, there is always one little tiny panel that sticks in my mind in this first issue, and that is of the Hulk and Rick walking through some trees while Hulk says "Have to keep moving..."

It's an image that stirs something in me. Thoughts of all those Atomic age horror films such as 'Them'. And even swamp-horror films like 'The Creature From The Black Lagoon' and 'Night of the Living Dead'.

So. Enough of my rambling. Check out the image.

And while you're at it, check out this guy's take on the Hulk. Amazing. And a huge influence on mine.

Niiiiiice. I can definately see an Eric Powell influence.

The clue's in the name really, isn't it? He should be a HULK, pure and simple. A great shambling hunk of meat. The steroid version is very 'lacking' - and it already feels horribly dated, in a sort of 90's way.

Cheers bud. I was just commenting on the Powell influence the other day to ~everyonesname And I really do hate the 90's stereotype of a 'superhero'. Yet another thing to hate Rob Liefeld for.

Oh, yeah, I know Hester from his work on Ant-Man. Nice stiff but he was a bit out-shined by Cory Walker doing some fill in issues.

Ouch.

I'm not much either, but mostly I care about the art. It takes a special branch of crazy genius to make me grab a book for just writing...mainly Warren Ellis. For the most part.

My fave ever book was Grant Morrison's whole run on New X-Men. After that Marvel and comics just felt... bland. The only good bits and bobs I've enjoyed since then are his other book, All Star Superman, The Destroyer, Irredeemable Ant Man, 100 Bullets (of course) and Darwyn Cooke's The New Frontier. Oh, Madrox and X-Factor were great while I read them too. I got bored of monthly comics though.

Yeah it felt too much like a chore then a happy experience. I peck, once in a blue moon.
This song embodied how I felt.

I think Joe Q however gave the comics quite a boost but yeah there tends to be too much to handle most of the time.

Have you not seen it? They've totally rebranded Fantastic Four as FF and they have new retro lost in space type uniforms, a new logo and Spider-Man is a member of the team that consists of WAY more than four people now.

Looks fucking epic... [link]
