Description
PLEASE FULL VIEW!(Scroll to the right half.)
Maybe one day when I'm crazy enough, I'll make a tutorial on the left half of that picture.
HOLY FREAK THIS TOOK WAY TOO LONG. I thought I'd take a nice, relaxing break from my chaotic Anime Expo preparations and have a go at my first tutorial, but nooooooo...this thing is more stressful than an actual drawing.
But seeing that I'm a PS newbie, I'm pretty glad that I was able to at least compile all this together. I guess I picked up some bits of Photoshop knowledge over the year after all. Would be sad if I didn't.
People have been asking me to do a tutorial for a long time now, and I apologize for taking next to forever to get around to it
Compressing 15 painful hours of sweat, cursing, and flinging objects into a 670×7637 pixel tutorial is no easy task. I'm kind of sad that I had to cut like 30 pictures (about 8 steps) off from the walk through. The thing is flippin' ginormous as it is, so I couldn't make it even larger D: And excuse my random doodles. I went a little nuts on the commentary too -_-;;
This is a thank-you gift for all of my watchers and friends online, and hopefully it'll be of some use to those of you who are starting out with markers :>
FAQ's
You can get Copics at local art stores (if you're lucky), and definitely online. Aside from a Japanese bookstore I go to, Kinokuniya, I also order them from online at [link] . THEY ARE NOT CHEAP. They can cost from $4.50 to $6.50 each, so shop smart :>
Manga manuscript, A4 size; I prefer Copic and Manga University brand. You can find these online too.
Lots of trial and error and lots of practice.
EDIT:
Um...holy crap. Another DD?! I never even dreamed of getting the first one. Thank you =AdigunPolack for your suggestion and kind words, and ^znow-white for featuring it! I appreciate it very much!

Wow, lol, the tutorial was really fun to read because of your side commentary and little faces! It made me laugh a lot, had to stop reading it a couple times because I could totally picture doing something similar when it came to drawing, lol. Throwing stuff, getting irritable because it took so freakin' long, but had to continue for the sake of detail.. My friends and family definitely find it amusing, someone usually has to drag me away from the pic to eat though.. hehe as I continue to rant on what a pain it is to draw it while at the same time saying "I NEED TO FIIIIINIIIIISH!!!" as I am being dragged by my arms or legs against the carpet then tile floor. TIP: Rugburns are not fun..
The tips are going to come it handy thanks for the blood, sweat, tears for this tutorial! I need to get my own markers though I'm a bit hesitant because it's my first time coloring with markers ever and I have like no cash and my parents are NOT supportive at ALL. Also the pictures I draw are always in pencil and shaded in with it, then I stop, I think I've only colored in one pic out of like 15, lol. I'm slow when drawing and lose my attention with it quite easily and there's school and the fact the muse of inspiration has packed it's gear and left me for a 4 year vacation has something to do with it too.. *le sigh* I'm ever scared in drawing it in pen or a marker because it's unfamiliar.. ugh, I need to take a shot though so hopeful I won't utterly fail and ruin a perfectly good pic, they're like my BABIES!! TT_TT
Anyways, I think I have like a small bottle full or courage after reading this so I'm gonna go kindly ask/hint/imply/ drop down and BEG grovel at my parents feet to get the stuuuff. (sounds like I want drugs or something XD ) If they say no, I'll do the same thing with my sister, but it will be hard groveling since it's over the phone.. *sighs* Why does she have to be in college now... o_0<<
I need to stop rambling. Like I said before thanks bunches! XD :huggles: *prepares to begs parents: starts off with warm ups* XP

When, exactly, did you start with drawing manga?
By the way, did you immediatly start drawing with color or just black & white at first?

I started when I was around 12, so 5 years ago. I only drew with a pencil for the first 3 years, then I moved onto color pencils and then finally markers :>

Erm question, I don't exactly have those wonderful markers....Do you think that Crayola (yes, horribly cheap things...They dry in 3 seconds of use D< markers can be used in the same manner as you have shown here?

lol I spot prismacolors in your collection! Congrats on the DD!! I love this tutorial XD I understand so much more lol Sadly, I have to drive 100 miles or so to get copics T.T so I'm stuck collecting prismacolor for now(which isnt really that bad but they do bleed sometimes and my parents hate driving 15 minutes to get them) Off I go to work on my latest piece of work (lineart and sketch in my scraps if anyone is interested) Again congrats on the DD!

This is probably a question you get often, but how do you get that gradient effect? I have tried (and perhaps I press too had) but I layer as well and it just comes out look cell animated Is it the type of paper you use?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
cartoongirl7 In reply to whytdragon [2008-08-22 04:11:40 +0000 UTC]
If it helps, I get a dark-to-light effect by coloring multiple layers on the darker areas and only one or two layers on the lighter areas. Using paper that's meant for markers probably helps too

Wow, this is greatness! Hehehe... zero. I was reading Vampire Knight for the first time... And, well, the girl Yuki. I saw someone talking about or to her, and I thought Zero 'cause he looks like Yuki Sohma-kun from Fruits Basket and he even makes the same faces and I was sooooo confused. Anyway that is a good tutorial.

I went through this tutorial really carefully even though I don't really draw; I don't even like anime/manga. But I'll tell you what. I'm impressed, and quite lost for words. The detail in this is amazing and you're a great artist with a lot of talent and patience. Beautiful.
