alternate title: cas rambles about battle cat characters for 45 min straight

so i saw this trend floating around for a while and didn't get around to it in time because i was having a tough time picking characters for some of the pairings, but i eventually settled on these guys! ;u ;;

buckle up because the description is gonna be longgg as i will show you the extensive peer-reviewed research i put into making this (jk they're mostly book quotes)

Mother and Kit(s) - Graypool, Stonefur and Mistyfoot

“Graypool’s smitten with them, and I think they like her.”

I don't think Graypool gets enough credit for raising these two. She was absolutely heart broken over the loss of her own children:

Mudfur and Brambleberry had taken turns to sit with the ailing queen and now she was finally strong enough to leave the camp from time to time, ranging out over the frozen river and yowling her heartbreak out loud.

And when Stonekit and Mistykit show up after being taken away from the only home they knew and losing Mosskit in the same day... I like to think that in a way, they saved each other. MAN it's really tragic Graypool had to die the way she did.

Some more quotes about them that I liked:
Firestar on Graypool :
Graypool had taken Mistyfoot and Stonefur when Bluestar, their real mother, had given them up. Without Graypool they would have died. She had suckled them and reared them until they were ready to become apprentices. She was the only mother they had ever known, and no cat could have done more for them.

Also Graypool ready to throw hands with Firestar if he revealed her secret lmao:
“Now listen to me,” rasped Graypool. “Mistyfoot and Stonefur know nothing, and if you tell them what I’ve just told you, I’ll rip your liver out and feed it to the crows.”

Siblings - Crookedstar and Oakheart
“I hope we get to train together soon. You’re my littermate and I’ll always be there for you.” Crookedkit purred, his jealousy melting. He loved Oakpaw too much to want anything less than the best for him.

This one was a no-brainer for me. They're definitely one of the most wholesome siblings in the entire series and I just love every one of their interactions.

I like how Oakheart isn't afraid to call Crookedstar out on his bs and encourages him to bond with Silverkit, because he knows that they need each other and he doesn't want his brother to miss his chance at being a part of her life:

“Leave me alone.” Crookedstar turned away. “It’s none of your business.”
Oakheart ducked in front of him. “Actually it is my business.” He thrust his muzzle closer. “You’re my littermate! Silverkit is my kin, too! You’re being a fish-brain and every cat knows it. I’m just the only cat brave enough to tell you.”
Also liked how Crookedstar knew about Oakheart and Bluefur and covered for him anyways because he loved his brother too much than to punish him with the code.

And something that I will always remember is how after Crookedkit's injury, how sweet Oakkit was to him, telling him that they would both train together soon and finding him a private place to eat his first meal.
“I can’t do it,” he whispered.
“Yes, you can.” Oakkit picked up the fish and carried it to a shadowy spot behind a jutting branch of the fallen tree. “Come over here.” He beckoned to Stormkit with his tail. “It’s quiet. You can eat in peace.”
And we all know Crookedstar's life ending up with many tragedies, so I leave you with this sad quote (foreshadowing Oakheart's death) because you can just tell how genuinely afraid Crookedstar is at the thought of losing his brother too:
Crookedstar looked up at him. Grief tightened his throat. “How can I love her when every cat I love dies?”
Oakheart’s eyes clouded. “I’m still here.”
Crookedstar got slowly to his paws. “You’re here for now.”

M/M Ship - Jake and Tallstar
“He felt lost and empty, and his dumb paws were tugging him who knew where. Would he really be able to let Jake go?”
Tallstar and his himbo boyfriend, Jake, was also an easy choice. I love their dynamic and how Tallstar finds Jake annoying at first, but then starts to grow fond of him as they travel together and then actually starting to dread the day they would need to say their good-byes.

Skimming through Tallstar's Revenge, they do be having some really cute moments, like Jake trying to take care of Talltail:
In WindClan, we line our nests with sheepswool,” Talltail remarked.
“I’ll get some.” Jake jumped out.
“It’s okay; you don’t have to.” Bones aching with tiredness, Talltail sat down. Jake was already heading toward the edge of the trees. “I won’t be long!”
Talltail being embarassed like i really really want you to come with me but only if you want to 👉👈:
“But this is my mission. I should . . .” Talltail’s mew trailed away. He didn’t want Jake to go. He searched the kittypet’s green gaze. “You don’t have to come.”
“I want to!” Jake shifted his paws, adding quietly,“If you don’t mind, that is.”
Talltail glanced at the ground, feeling hot. “I don’t mind,” he murmured. “It’s good to have company.”
This golden moment, where Jake is like my bf is grumpy to you bc he doesn't like you lol:
“See?” Reena flicked her ears at Jake. “Grumpy old badger.”
“He’s not grumpy with me.” Jake wound past Talltail, lifting his tail.
And this:
“Not yet,” Jake soothed. “You were twitching in your sleep. I was worried.”
“It was a bad dream.” Talltail looked into Jake’s steady gaze, comforted by his friend’s soft, sleep-hazy scent.
Jake curled down beside him. “Go back to sleep."
It's a little disappointing that Jake doesn't end up following Talltail (or vice versa), but I guess Warriors (tm) just wasn't ready for that I do like how this novel adds another layer to Tallstar and Fireheart's friendship - almost like he sees Fireheart as a son because he reminds him of Jake. :')

Father and Kit - Mudfur and Leopardkit
Mudfur leaned over the water. “I want to catch a carp for Leopardkit,” he murmured, eyes fixed on the water. “It’s her favorite.”
Had a bit of a tough time with this one, but I settled for these two because I love how Mudfur, after losing so much, decides to become a healer for their world rather than a fighter. Which I interpret as "I want to make the world better for my daughter by helping others" since it's after losing Brightsky and his other kits that really pushes him to make this choice. I feel like there's a fair number of characters that were forced to become medicine cats, but very few (especially those that were once Warriors) willingly choosing to change course.

He also just gives soft single dad vibes, doting on his little girl and I really like that LOL

Friendship - Cinderpelt and Littlecloud
"Cinderpelt saved my life once. That act bonded us closer than friends. I will not abandon the Clan she loved until that debt is repaid."
Always loved that medicine cats all have a special bond with each other because they commune peacefully at Moonstone/pool. I feel like there have been few alliances between ThunderClan and ShadowClan (especially in the original arc), so Cinderpelt and Littlecloud's friendship stands out a lot for me. Especially since Cinderpelt was compassionate enough to help Littlecloud and Whiteclaw when they were sick (and I love that this was what prompted Littlecloud to become a medicine cat too!)

M/F Ship - Graystripe and Silverstream
"Graystripe is a great and worthy warrior. If the warrior code can't deal with this...then maybe the warrior code needs to change."
I know some of the fandom find Silverstream kind of problematic, but I think her "f the warrior code attitude" is hilarious. Plus Gray x Silver was my OG OTP pairing.
I read the Graystripe mangas before any of the other Warriors books and even enough they had a strong focus on Mille x Gray and gave very little info on Silverstream, 10 year old me was still like mmm silver cat go brrr and I even made a fan comic of Silverstream and Graystripe of how they met (which was completely different from the books, I just made it up because I didn't know they were in the main series LMAO)

Also love that one moment in the Last Hope where Graystripe sees Silverstream in the middle of battle and is like ! and she's just like I'll be waiting for you like lmao rip Millie.

Grandparent and Grandkit - Yellowfang and Silverflame
"Whatever happens, Yellowfang, know that I am always with you. Trust your instincts. Make your own choice."
I skimmed Yellowfang's Secret for quotes and while I remember they had a lot of interactions when Yellowfang was Yellowkit, I completely forgot their relationship extended well into Yellowfang's medicine cat days. I also forgot how much Silverflame's death really affected Yellowfang - which is interesting since it's so rare to see a grandkit mourn a grandparent in this series (only other one I can think of is Sandstorm and Alderpaw).

Some more quotes about them that I liked:
Yellowkit and Silverflame rolled into the open; Yellowkit ended up on top, clinging to Silverflame’s belly fur. “Do you give in?” she demanded. “No more eating cats?”
“No more, I promise,” Silverflame responded. Then she let out a gusty sigh. “Go on, my old bones won’t stand much more of this.” As Yellowkit bounced off her, Silverflame sat up and shook her gray-and-orange pelt, panting a little as she caught her breath. She blinked affectionately at Yellowkit and a purr rose in her throat. “Well fought, little one,” she mewed. “I can see you’re going to be one of the best warriors in ShadowClan.
and
The she-cat shook her head. “I’m not hungry. The young ones need to eat more than I do.” Yellowkit frowned. What does Silverflame mean? All cats need to eat!
“Come on,” she urged, giving Silverflame a gentle push. “Let’s go together and find something tasty.”
“Okay.” With a huge sigh Silverflame rose to her paws.

Mentor and Apprentice - Sunfall and Bluepaw
“I have high hopes for you, Bluefur. You were my apprentice once, and I will always feel like your mentor. I want you to strive to become the best warrior you can be, because I believe one day ThunderClan will have need of your gifts."
I feel like a lot of people forget about Sunstar, which is a shame because he carried his leadership with such grace and was so kind to Pinestar, even when he abandons the clan to become a kittypet. He also helped Bluepaw out of the grief she felt over Moonflower's death and reminded her that her mother wouldn't have wanted her to become a burden for the clan.

He acts like a father figure to her, and he's present every time she's grieving, such as Snowfur's death and losing her kits:
“Leaf-bare is followed by newleaf and then by greenleaf. The forest doesn’t freeze forever. You must take heart from that, after the loss of your kits. I know that you will be okay—and even stronger than before.”
And I love the theory(? I think one of the Erins confirmed it) that Sunfall had feelings for Moonflower - makes a lot of sense and I wish it was explored more.

F/F Ship - Mothwing and Leafpool
“But if you don’t believe in StarClan, why take any notice of Feathertail’s warning?”

The RiverClan cat slowed down to look into Leafpool’s eyes. “Because I believe in you, Leafpool.”
“I don’t put my trust in the stars, but I do place them in you.” Wow mothwing that’s kinda ahhhh 😳💅
this was the Firestar family / Tigerstar family pairing we deserved. It's probably more of a fanon ship than a canon ship, but they still have their moments:
Squirrelflight turned back to look for Leafpool and saw her racing across the shore to join Hawkfrost’s sister, Mothwing, who was the RiverClan medicine cat. The beautiful golden tabby twined her tail with Leafpool’s, excitedly telling her something that Squirrelflight was too far away to hear.
I also remember Leafpool covering for Mothwing's faithlessness in StarClan and helping her through her insecurities as a medicine cat and also calling her beautiful in her thoughts a lot lol

Also Mothwing being lowkey jealous of Crowfeather??? found this gem while skimming one of the books
“Sorry,” the WindClan warrior muttered. He gave Mothwing a searching stare. “I want a word with Leafpool, if you don’t mind.”
Mothwing looked surprised, and hesitated as if she were about to object. Then she nodded and let out a faint, knowing mrrow. Leafpool felt her skin under her fur flush hot with embarrassment.
