It's really happening ladies & gentlemen. I'm back again. (: Feels good!

This is a basic sketch that I've made this morning of Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes of the BBC series. I love the way he searches for solutions and the way they have portrayed him in the show. Awesomesauce.

I will work this into a full-blown detailed and conceptual drawing. I have 2 concepts in mind, but I haven't made up my mind about what I should do. Until then, a work in progress will do.

Besides, I really enjoy the unfinished look of the drawing, so I polished it a bit with a vintage layer that I use for pretty much everything 8D aaaaand post it as my first submission after 3 months of absence. W00t! I'm excited like C.R.A.Z.Y. Aaaahh!!

To those who are interested, you can read on further for a short tutorial-esque description about the techniques and guidelines that I've used!

Cheers!

:-:~~~~~:-:~~~~~:-:~~~~~:-:~~~~~:-:~~~~~:-:

Lets give a brief introduction about what I've done so far, shall we? (:

The outlines were mostly done with an "F" 0.5mm mechanical pencil, which I purchased just recently, AND LOVING IT. "F" leads show strong lines, yet they are easy to erase when mistakes have been made.

So remember: F and H pencils = GOOD for sketching!!

-----

I used a grid, mostly to get the pattern right which is displayed in the background. While the human face and figure are easy to do freehand because they are asymmetric and show some sort of flow most of the time, shapes like this pattern or any kind of (unnatural) shape are so much harder to draw, because you need to fulfill certain types of rules to make them look natural. And that's why I used a grid, to make sure all shapes are in the right places and look natural.

-----

The size of the drawing itself is 20x20cm / 8"x8" big, a size I've never worked on. I'm trying new things. (:

-----

On the left I wrote some of my ideas on the places where I might work them out. This way I won't forget their purpose during the drawing progress. Writing down words on my drawing surface ain't something I do often, but it makes a nice addition while I can let go of my ideas and focus on the drawing again.

-----

For basic sketches I prefer to intensify contrasting colours and proportions. This I do by using dark pencils such as 2B for the darkest parts, and 2H for the lightest parts. The in-between parts are done with H and F. This way it's easier to continue. You no longer have to worry if certain parts of the drawing look right or wrong proportional-wise.

You bet it may be better to not log in for the day then, I don't know everything but I'm sure the staff have something in the pipes

And my life is fine thank you! Visited another Open Day at a university today - at Nijmegen this time. It wasn't bad but the few things that made it stand out from other universities, I saw as a disadvantage. So yeah, I know now that I don't want to go there... so at least it was a useful trip How's your life?

NOOOOOOOOOOOO. I wrote this long a$$ comment for you and stupid me got distracted and clicked on another comment to answer without saving yours first. WHY.
April Fools' has already taken its toll on me 8D

Anyway, my point was that even though I reallllllllly don't like practical jokes on April Fools' at all because it's anything BUT practical, I can't avoid dA now that I've posted a new drawing I sort of feel like I've abandoned my devwatchers the last 3 months, so I want to take care of them! Come here you!

I'm glad to read visiting Nijmegen gave you some insight about what you want to do and what you want to become, even when Nijmegen didn't fulfill your expectations (if you had any)! There are tons and tons of people out there who can't make up their minds about schools or universities or classes. So KUDOS to you bro! Yeah!

My life has been ultra complex the last 3 months. It's heavy personal healthy stuff. Not that I mind to tell you, but since these are public comments I prefer not to say it! But what matters is that right now I'm doing good and I'm back again for real this time!

Yes, I understand you want to still be around now to reply to some messages That's nice of you! My message center has certainly missed your presence

There are indeed! I went to uni before but quit after a year since the study wasn't really for me. I want to get it right this time! Hence why i'm on a gap year now to take my time to decide

Aw, well glad you're back You're always free to note me too!

Aw, man. Been sketsing Sherlock all day myself, too. This is very pretty. Your smooth, angelic rendition of him certainly makes that pose look all the more like he's praying... ha.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Cataclysm-X In reply to NPCbot [2012-03-31 21:09:08 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. I noticed it too, the praying pose, AFTER I sketched the whole thing. I wish I noticed it sooner, but oh well x)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

NPCbot In reply to Cataclysm-X [2012-03-31 21:17:04 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, the apparent praying kind of clashes with the whole "strictly logical atheist" persona he's got going on(which is why I'm constantly baffled by the amount of fanart where Sherlock has angel wings and is looking all holy with religious paraphernalia - what gives, people?). Maybe make the image a bit sharper and more contrasted, if you want to lessen the "angelic" look? The light is very soft, now, and he kinda has a halo.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

Bloodraven1500 In reply to NPCbot [2012-04-01 05:08:51 +0000 UTC]

The angel wings and such are a reference to this from the show:

Jim Moriarty: Nah,β€” you talk big. Nah … you're ordinary. You're ordinary β€” you're on the side of the angels.

Sherlock Holmes: Oh, I may be on the side of the angels...but don't think for one second that I am one of them.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

NPCbot In reply to Bloodraven1500 [2012-04-01 11:36:09 +0000 UTC]

Well, yeah... Of course there's that. But he says it himself, he's not one of them
Then again, I guess Angel!lock is one of the least baffling versions... I mean, I've seen Sherlock portrayed as a cat, a mermaid, a vampire, a werewolf, and a fairy among other things haha that's what fanart is for, huh?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Bloodraven1500 In reply to NPCbot [2012-04-01 16:52:55 +0000 UTC]

Yup! Fanart is there for all of your imagination needs.
I can understand Catlock, that was when people were trying to find Sherlock's animal version. Now they've decided on and otter for him, and John's a hedgehog.
I don't understand the mermaid or fairy at all though. Vampire and werewolf, fine. Those are like, default mythological creatures for fanart and fanfiction. But a fairy?
Oh well. Sorry if I annoyed you, you can just ignore me. XP

Did you happen to see the unicorn!Sherlock that has a big following? The fairy!John scares me like no horror movie ever could...ahah.

Bloodraven1500 In reply to PaleRedPanic [2012-04-05 22:36:55 +0000 UTC]

WUT
Unicorn!Sherlock? That's a bit disturbing.
Fairy!John sounds like the stuff of nightmares.
Now I have the image of John wearing a pink tutu and waving a glittery, star-topped wand. And of course, the wings.
O.O

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

NPCbot In reply to Bloodraven1500 [2012-04-01 17:06:44 +0000 UTC]

Nope, not annoyed at all!
Maybe it'd a good thing that the fandom has so much fun with the show and it's characters - even if some of it is completely ridiculous... At least the fanbase is alive and kicking! ^^

...Hedgehog-John. Do want.
Even if he is supposed to be made of kittens.
Still.
Hedgehog. That's just too cute. Why've I never seen any hedgehog-john pictures? Or Otter-Sherlock, for that matter? Must investigate.

Um, I'm confused. Why is Sherlock an otter? Hedgehog-Jawn I get because he's small and cute but also prickly and defensive and all that jazz.
But how exactly is Sherlock like a otter? It's very cute though!

Cataclysm-X In reply to NPCbot [2012-03-31 21:47:27 +0000 UTC]

So true! It's funny though, I had 2 concept in mind:

A.) the first idea was to make it all blurry and vague and with this beautful lightfall which blurs the left side of the drawing, while the right side will stay sharp, OR;

B.) the second idea was that I wanted to make it sort of mathematical, with formulas and mathematical numbers and figures flowing or written on the left, so it get loads and loads less "holified". I'm not a big fan of these angelic Sherlock pieces either, so I definitely do not intend to make Sherlock look angelic.

Thanks for the useful tips!!

Ooh, I hope youll do the numbers/formulas thing. I'd love to see that.
Ha, I've explored the concept of floating numbers & letters quite a lot in my Sherlock fanart, but I've yet to paint the detective himself.
