Find more of my pencil work on::~~~~~:~~~~~:~~~~~:~~~~~:~~~~~:
It's really happening ladies & gentlemen. I'm back again. (: Feels good!
This is a basic sketch that I've made this morning of Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes of the BBC series. I love the way he searches for solutions and the way they have portrayed him in the show. Awesomesauce.
I will work this into a full-blown detailed and conceptual drawing. I have 2 concepts in mind, but I haven't made up my mind about what I should do. Until then, a work in progress will do.
Besides, I really enjoy the unfinished look of the drawing, so I polished it a bit with a vintage layer that I use for pretty much everything 8D aaaaand post it as my first submission after 3 months of absence. W00t! I'm excited like C.R.A.Z.Y. Aaaahh!!
To those who are interested, you can read on further for a short tutorial-esque description about the techniques and guidelines that I've used!
Cheers!
:-:~~~~~:-:~~~~~:-:~~~~~:-:~~~~~:-:~~~~~:-:
So remember: F and H pencils = GOOD for sketching!!

Woohoo! You have no idea how happy I am that you're doing a drawing of one of my favourite actors. It's fantastic, too. I just showed my mom and she was very impressed as well.

Thank you (and your mum!) so much I'm glad you like it so far
I thought he would be a lot harder to draw, but luckily he's not!

Yes, he's surprisingly quite easy to draw in fact! I did a charcoal drawing of him a while back to give to a friend. He has a nice angular face. I think perhaps the hardest thing to get right is the lips and nose combination at some angles. Which part did you find most difficult?

hmm hmm, true! Can I find this charcoal piece of yours in your gallery by the way? I'm quite curious to the outcome!
The lightfall on the nose was a bit tricky to do, but then again I have always found the nose the hardest part to draw of the human face so there's also the answer to your question about what I found most difficult to draw of this portrait.
I'm a bit mesmerized by your David avatar that lovely, lovely man. He got married on my birthday, did you know that? As if it was meant to beeee... *dreams on*

My scanner absolutely killed it, and I made improvements on it since, but here it is: [link]
It was only my second time doing a full portrait in charcoal. I wish my scanner had not eaten it.
Haha, oh David. Yes. It's a screencap I took from The Friday Night Project when he was the guest host. I paused and knew it needed to be made into an icon.

I'm gonna check it out right now! Exciting
Screencaps are usually the best that way you can be pretty sure no-one else has the same icon. Nice choice
can't go wrong with David!

That's exactly what I was thinking! Plus the background is my favourite colour so it was doubly awesome. Have you seen him in Hamlet? There are some excellent screencaps to be had from that, too.

I really like how clean and almost simple the shading is here. It looks effortless even though I am sure it was not! You have done a brilliant job at capturing his peaceful yet motivated expression and the addition of the complex pattern behind him adds a great contrast to that mood.
Lovely work... something that I had to add to my favorites! Cheers.

Thank you so much ~Sterin and you're absolutely right about the complicated/simply shading
! It's hard to make a drawing look pleasant and natural to the eye. While the outlines and proportions were done within less than 30 minutes, I had to be careful which parts I would shade strong or curvy, and so it took me another 60 to 90 minutes to shade the whole thing. But in the end I managed to get them on the right places (:

looks really good so far!
Even it is not finished but looks so well I like this high contrast, because it's already look like Sherlock and even realistic.
I really like this scene. Benedict is a really good as Sherlock

Heyyyyyyy, thank you love!
Oh you bet Benedict with his fancy name makes an excellent Sherlock. It's funny though, how convincing he plays Sherlock. I had never seen him play in movies or on TV before so I really thought he was this grumpy, serious guy for real until I saw other movies by him (Amazing Grace with Ioan Gruffudd for instance, SO BEAUTIFUL) and from that moment I just knew he was an incredible actor who does incredible, magical things.
So yes he's really good, if not perfect as Sherlock.
Highfive!

You're very welcome!
Yes! I think the same. When I first saw this series I was amazed how he played Sherlock so well and realistic. The creators had a really good ideas. Of course Martin Freeman is also really good. They both play fantastic characters.
I also have started to be interested in other Benedict's movies. I saw "The amazing Grave" a few months ago. It was a very interesting and moving story. Benedict can really play character very realistic, very talented actor indeed!
He is perfect, especially I can be sure of that after seeing episodes from 2nd series!

Cataclysm, I love how you do your sketches in a way that most of the dark tones are already put down, so that you only have to add the inbetween shades and polish it up at the end.
I read the description. I like everything about how you go about doing your drawing. << I don't know if I made sense there...
Anyways, good luck!

Cataclysm-X In reply to MohanABK [2012-03-31 21:28:06 +0000 UTC]
Yup, that's the way I roll it makes drawing realism so much easier than how I used to draw portraits (finishing one element/facial feature a time).
Thank you! Luck is what I need, I'm afraid
