Description If you have read any of my descriptions more closely, you might have noticed I'm a great admirer of Jeff Buckley, a musician who passed away far before his time. There's no doubt you have heard his music before, with Hallelujah and Grace being 2 of his better known songs.

On May 29th, 1997, Jeff Buckley died at age of 30 near the Mississippi River, where his body was found dead 6 days after he was reported missing. A drowning accident took away his young life.

Even 13 years after his death Jeff is still considered to be one of the greatest musicians of all time. To this very day he inspires known and unknown artists all over the world and influences musicians like Chris Cornell (Soundgarden) and Matthew Bellamy (Muse).

Yes, he inspired me too, in many ways. So when I bought this little old-looking sketchbook, I wanted to dedicate the very first pages to the extraordinary and beautiful person he was.

The lyrics on the left page are from his song "Lover, You Should've Come Over" because that's my favourite song of his next to "Grace". In both of these songs Jeff foretold his own death without even knowing it, which is both eerie and eccentric at the same time.

You will always be an inspiration to many and forever be in our hearts. Even though I've never met you, I still miss you Jeff.
Rest in Peace.

Drawn on 2 A5 pages with 0.5mm B mechanical pencil.

"My Sweetheart the Drunk" was the working title that Jeff Buckley was using while writing and recording the album. Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk is a collection of polished studio tracks and four-track demos recorded by Jeff Buckley.

I think so too. I've heard Cohen's original version before, and I still gotta say that even though it's beautiful, I'm more fond Jeff's version because it's so touching.

I will be completely honest when I say that I have never hear of Jeff Buckley before but I did want to say something about this...

The moment I saw this in my inbox I wanted to see the whole thing and I will honestly say that your artwork has always astounded me, but this one literally took my breath away. >//< I hope that doesn't sound cheesy or anything. But really, out of everything I've seen thus far from you this peice definately has to be my favourite even though I have no clue who he is.

Which, by the way, has also in turn inspired me to search for his music.

Thank you for sharing your gift and inspiration with us here on dA in one fell swoop.

Certainly was one of the best male voices of our time- if not /the/ best, in my opinion.

Very fitting tribute.

Also; ever listen to Jimmy Gnecco?

I only mentioned him because he did know Jeff Buckley for a time- among many others, he made a tribute song for him.

Amazing voices, both of them.

You're welcome.

ScribalWriter In reply to Cataclysm-X [2010-02-18 01:28:57 +0000 UTC]

Hallelujah. And then Grace. I think Hallelujah was the first song I ever heard done by him... I can just sink right into it. His voice is just... guh... melt my brain.

Very cool! I like the composition a lot. The top right pic of him creeps me out a little - just cause it looks like he has hollow eyes, and oddly, that's a big fear of mine. A great tribute piece.

Cataclysm-X In reply to AloraKitten [2010-02-17 14:24:14 +0000 UTC]

I choose the 3 different images carefully. The top right image which creeps you out a little, reminds me of death which is of course connected to Jeff too. Look: here's the original <3

Thank you

Hmm I'm sure you've heard the (badly covered) new versions of Hallelujah, which has been used in American Idol, the X Factor and a better version in the movie Shrek!

Thank you

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

shmeeden In reply to Cataclysm-X [2010-02-17 14:01:13 +0000 UTC]

I don't know that I'd call all other versions badly covered. It's originally a Leonard Cohen song, so I'd consider them covers of his version, not Jeff's. Personally I rather like the Rufus Wainwright cover they used in Shrek (even though I dislike Shrek).

Did you see KD Lang do her version at the Olympic opening ceremonies? I thought it was beautiful.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Cataclysm-X In reply to shmeeden [2010-02-18 12:56:47 +0000 UTC]

KD Lang's version is incredible too. Couldn't see the Olympic opening because the time difference is too big, so I just looked it up

It's true that Cohen wrote the original version, but the new versions of Hallelujah you hear these days are all based on Jeff's. Cohen's version was much longer with a lot more couplets, while the onew ones only use the short version of Jeff's.

There's this song called "Space Dementia" (Origin of Symmetry) on which Matt's voice is exactly the same as Jeff's. It's amazing!

malicon In reply to Cataclysm-X [2010-02-17 13:52:12 +0000 UTC]

Ooh yes, very much a Muse fan.

I don't think I've heard that song. I think the only Origin of Symmetry song we have is New Born, which is my favorite.
On a side note, Christopher is the best bassist evah!
