Description I don't support to treat people the way I am being treated.
I support to treat people the way I want to be treated if I were in the same situation.

Meaning: with respect!

What about you?

Treat others only as you consent to being treated in the same situation.
The Golden Rule

I was surprised to find out no-one made a stamp about the Golden Rule, a very common but underrated philosophical rule known by many, but alas practiced by far less people than it should.

I was very sad to discover that many of my devwatchers have been discriminated at least once in their life. (You could check my poll for many examples and personal stories.) No-one should be treated differently just for what they are.

After all: it doesn't matter what culture you come from. It doesn't matter what your beliefs are, whether you believe in God, Allah, Buddha or yourself for that matter. Who cares if you are thin or overweighted; if your skin colour is different than mine; if you're male, female, small, tall, beautiful, imperfect, wear glasses, silly shoes; listen to whatever kind of music you like to listen to; your whole being.

In the end, I will love and treat you for who you are.

All I'm asking you is to treat me and anyone else with respect too.

(I would make a great hippie, I know. Who cares if I was a hippie anyway that's the whole point, people!)

Other stamp I've made:

PS!!!

There have been a few discussions about what this rule means when talking about masochists (explanation can be found here ) for instance. Well... I guess that means there should be a few exceptions about this rule. The most important thing is to treat people with respect, and don't offend or hurt them in any way possible.

I am aware it's impossible to make this rule work for everyone, but that doesn't mean we couldn't try to make this world a better place.

it's not about treating everyone with the same respect, really
It's about... how would you be treated if you were in his or her position/situation?

This one goes along very well with another saying, freedom. The act of being free to do whatever you want, without harming or disturbing anyone else in the process.

Very nice!

Being kind also rewards aplenty in karma - or at least has done so for me.

The one-thirds rule of design is also called the Golden Rule though...

I just can't believe all the people nitpicking this stamp. I mean, come on. It's about treating others with, at the very least, respect. I prefer to try and show respect and love to everyone, even if they make me mad. But the majority of the world isn't like that... so many people just start off treating someone horribly before they even know them.

Good manners of all kinds have dwindled, ESPECIALLY on the internet. Online more than anywhere people say hurtful and mean things without a second thought, never stopping to think or care about what their words can mean to the person who reads them. Worse yet, they find it funny to go around spreading hatred and hurting others! The world is just full of nasty people

Wow, I ranted that time... but thank you for this stamp. At least some people still try to live by this rule...

You can't believe that the Golden Rule is sufficient enough to live by to the point that it can replace religious morality. To take the golden rule to its logical conclusion would dictate that you should treat others as you're treated. Let's say you know somebody personally who treats you with disrespect and constantly underestimates your intelligence. For you to treat this person with professional respect is to essentially BREAK the golden rule by showing this person that others could and often will treat them better than they treat others. According to this rule, you should react to anger with anger, alienation with alientation, etc.

Basically stating, regardless if people have a golden rule, "treat others as you are treated" is truth, regardless of which philosophy reins.

VentAnger In reply to BOONJAGGA [2010-08-15 00:16:47 +0000 UTC]

How is it 'truth'? It's a philosophy, and a flawed one at that. "Treat others as you are treated" only leads to you treating others well if you YOURSELF are treated well. If you live by that philosophy and you've been somehow tortured, you then become a torturer.

BOONJAGGA In reply to VentAnger [2010-08-15 00:34:38 +0000 UTC]

you yourself stated that treating someone with professional respect when they do not respect you is essentially breaking the golden rule. You also stated that to take the golden rule to it's logical conclusion would mean to treat others as you're treated, which is exactly what I just said. Albeit I did forget while I was writing you stated that it's not sufficient enough to replace religious morality, which was probably your major point.

hooray for Kantian ethics. The golden rule actually has thre subsections to it, each on specific parts! Check it out on the Stanford encyclopedia of philosophy!

On a not-so-serious note, I love the simple problems that arise with those kinds of messages:

Let's say I am masochist. I enjoy feeling pain, suffering and all that beautiful stuff. So, according to the message of this stamp, I am perfectly allowed to treat others that way, id est, cause them pain and suffering.

The problem with those simple "morality" stamps is that it only takes an indifferent and/or mentally abnormal person to screw them really bad.

I try and follow this rule all the time. Sometimes it's hard, like when theres someone really buggin you, but then I think, how would I feel in this situation and try and resist the urge to be mean >: )

Dair-to-be-me [2010-08-13 12:19:36 +0000 UTC]

Very true.
Though about masochists, they can lead their lives as they wish, while still respecting others. Just like the rest of us can respect their wish to live their lifestyle without subjugating them to ours. It's just how you wish to interpret the rule for the situation, it gets more complicated in such an interaction, but is still a valid rule to go by.

This golden rule is also in the bible.
Like there are many proverbs used by people that came from the bible without knowing it was from there (sry for my bad grammar )

But it's really surprising that nobody made a stamp of this.
I'm going to fav it for the statement itself and in hope I'll be able to use it someday xd

In an ideal world this would be an ideal life philosophy... Unfortunately, although the world itself is ideal, the humans that populate it most definitely are not and there are far too many who will take the opposite view just to get their kicks, and that includes some of the original hippies I knew! Sorry to be on a bit of a downer but that's what I've learned in life... However, we could all aspire to do better...

Cataclysm-X In reply to magiccoupons [2010-08-13 10:54:22 +0000 UTC]

You misunderstand the whole concept.

It's not about treating people the way they treat you. It's about people who treat others as they wish to be treated by others if they were in the very same situation.

No-one wants to be raped, so don't do it (= raping people) to others either. That's the whole point!
