Description As promised, because I love you people:

My proportions tutorial!

Since every drawing is unique, I explained the techniques I used. It's up to you to practice them, yay!

You know... sometimes it makes me wonder why I keep posting tutorials since there are still a couple of people out there who say "I give people false hope" or "everything's fake anyway".

But when I read all the comments of fellow artists, e-mails of art students or people who just happened to come across my gallery and private notes of people who are happy to see my tutorials and find them really useful, I just melt!

And you know what? Even some art teachers are using my tutorials for school assignments after they've asked for my permission, lol!

What a strange world we live in.

----------------------------------------------

It's a shame I just don't have the time to publish my art book yet, but someday I will...

Have fun everyone and keep up the good work!
If there are any questions left, please feel free to note me about it!

I've just started drawing and I have to say that your tutorials have helped a lot . Just a question: how long does it usually take you to finish a sketch? I just finished my sketch and can now start shading which is something I'm a bit afraid of .

Uhm, mirrors! I don't get it with your picture of Katie. It does look equal to me in both directions. The "defects" you are talking about I do see equal in both.

Very interesting approach to drawing a face. I'm reading Andrew Loomis's Drawing the Head and Hands and it's completely different technique.

Thankyou for this tutorial. Its very helpful. I am a beginner and for the first few portraits I used the grid method. I found it to be to time consuming and not as much fun. So the last one I did I used a ruler and divider and found I got a better result and had alot more fun doing it. My question is, this is working well for doing a portrait with one person but I'm worried about centering when it comes to adding another. So how do I make sure my placement is correct when I start if I'm using the line method?

This is probably going to sound *really* stupid, but just bear with me, because I'm kind of clueless about this. With gridding, do you draw the lines and erase them when you're done, or... How do you do it? Because I figure that erasing them messes up the drawing. Hmm. Very tricky.
Thanks for these tutorials!

Nice tutorial!! Ive never heard of mirroring before so that got me excited. Cant wait to try it.
Another technique ive heard of is to turn both your drawing and your ref upside down. When you cant recognise the shapes as being eyes and noses and such, your more likely to draw them accurately. Plus it always puts a smile on my face to turn the drawing rightside up again and be surprised at the progress.
I am nowhere near as good of a pencil artist as you, but I hope to be someday!! Thanks for being inspiring!!

Thanks for that tutorial...
Until now I always used free hand... which turned out horrible very often
I'm glad that I find new options here of how to make the proportions correctly
I would be pleased if my art teacher would help us with some little tips like they are here in your tutorial

I never use grids or anything, I always draw freehand. And I always use references that are a lot smaller than the drawing I'm making. But then again, I am not trying to copy the reference, I am trying to capture the likeness and character of the person in the reference. And I usually do get a good likeness, despite the fact that I work fast (seldom more than 5 hours in a portrait). All this goes to show how much art methods can differ from artist to artist! Thanks for the tutorials.

Thank you so much. I quit drawing years ago, one of the main reasons being I could never get proportions of faces correctly, or drawing realistically in general. I felt so bad for only being able to draw cartoons. I hope to use your advice to draw again.

Really good tip about mirroring, its so true, i actually just remember i usually look at my drawings on the mirror after finished, didnt knew why.

I only draw freehand, i always have thought i was wrong because i didnt draw figures first, you know the skeleton, i havent really tried to do them, i just think is really hard, so i do it freehand... but oh well, to each is own.

thanks for the tips

I never realized how important this was, I'm used to drawing "free hand" but since it doesn't work for me, I've gotta do sth and figure my way of proportioning my sketches. I'm going to try some of these styles!

i tried mirroring my drawing of ezio auditore and i have to say, ow that i've mirrored it i want to go back and redo the whole thing. but the reason that happens may be because i only draw freehand because that's how i taught myself to draw. good tips!

Phinnimonster [2010-04-14 17:37:16 +0000 UTC]

I use the mirroring technique, too (or sometimes I turn the paper around and shine some light behind it so I can see the flipped version.) It makes a big difference! I always notice things I wouldn't have without it! I usually discover that my picture is completely lopsided. : P

I have a different method all together, I measure out points of the image using the reference, and end up with a like dot-to-dot type thing.. it's extremely tedious, but it's the only thing that works for me!

Thank you for this tutorial... I use the freehand method with a little bit of the line method... I also copy from my laptop... I save the picture and use it as a reference right form the screen so it's harder.. I guess that's why my drawings don't look as good... You're tutorials have helped a lot, and I have been improving because of them! Thank you!
