My newest pride and joy!

A double portrait of princess Zelda and Link.

Total size of each drawing:
1" x 1" / 25mm x 25mm / €2.-

Back in the NES era Zelda was the first game I liked to play.
...Good old times!

While Zelda was the last portrait I've drawn in 2011, Link's portrait was the first of 2012. I used two references for the poses, but changed their facial appearances to my heart's content.

I spent about half an hour on placing the eye shimmering with white gel by using a needle. In between every heartbeat my hand was steady enough to press the needle (+ white gel) on paper. But even then I hit the needle 0.3mm too high or too low for about 2 or 3 times, and I had to start all over again.

The pencil in the picture is to show how small they really are. Both portraits were, as usual, drawn with mechanical pencils.

I'm thinking about selling these 2 portraits, so if you're interested in buying them, don't hesitate to send me a note!

:~~~~~:~~~~~:~~~~~:~~~~~:~~~~~:

Stuff used:
- 2H, H, HB, B 0.3mm mechanical pencils
- 2B 0.5mm mechanical pencil
- Schoellershammer natural paper
- kneaded eraser
- 2 reference images
- white gel + needle for eye shimmering
- magnifying glass

Time spent:
10 hours for Zelda
8 hours for Link

Thank you!!

The colour is somewhat Dark Phthalo Green/regular green-ish it doesn't really have a name as far as I can see, lol. It was a cheap but good bottle of nailpolish

Instant fave! Wowzers, even a tiny signature and date on Link's right shoulder. You're crazy, but so awesome!

I miss those NES days for sure. I still have my NES with Zelda II: The Adventure of Link in a hard case to protect them.

Zelda got a signature too, but the pencil covered it so you can't see it here

Hahaha good for you, better keep those games safe and sound! Now that I think about it, maybe I should get back at playing some really old Zelda games...

You should! I think the older games are more challenging and fun. The only bad part is having to blow into the cartridge to get the game to work.

Wonderful work. How do you get them so small and draw all that detail?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Cataclysm-X In reply to bluepygmy [2012-01-14 09:22:46 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!! Well, there are 2 things that make it easier to draw them small yet detailed first, there's the magnifying glass that I use to make the images 4x as big (my magnifying is really amazing!) and secondly, the longer you work on those small drawings, the more you get used to the small sizes so that, somehow, they don't look small anymore and it's easier to draw more details (:

You are very welcome. Browsing through your gallery, I notice you have a wonderful coloured pencil painting of Jude Law. I see that this was done with the Derwent Coloursoft range, as I have these also, could you please tell me what colours
were used to produce the skin tones and the eyes?

Thank you

I honestly can't remember which colours I exactly used, but the more diverse colours you use (flesh tones, gray tones, blue, purple, red, orange brown) to more natural it will look like!

maxflamehead In reply to ??? [2012-01-12 18:46:52 +0000 UTC]

If you make a mistake, how small is the eraser? Or is it just to small and have to scrap it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Cataclysm-X In reply to maxflamehead [2012-01-14 09:26:39 +0000 UTC]

I use different erasers for different purposes! If I need to correct a line (and eyebrow for instance) I use the eraser on the back of a mechanical pencil, or an eraser in the shape of a pencil, or a little sharp piece that I cut from a larger eraser. And then there's the kneaded eraser that I use for soft pencillines or highlights
