Description
So I have been asked to make a tutorial for Gamzee/Kurloz horns. So I finally made one~With that I did my best to explain how I made them...though clearly I feel like I have failed at it.
So I'm sorry if I have and that if didn't work or help out.
If you want me to do another tutorial for a different set of horns then go ahead and ask me.
But if you have any questions about them do go ahead and ask and I'll do my best to answer them(I put some of peoples questions below so look them over and see if one of them fits to your question. If not then ask~)
Q: How long they were before you shaped them?
A: For Gamzee rolled out and straight I would say between 12-13 inches.
With that then you can curve them and they shouldn't be too bad.
Kurloz horns are around 15-16 inches straight and are bigger when you curve them.
Q: Does the hot glue and super glue really work?
A: Yes they both work if you use them together. Just use the hot glue first of course and wait a little bit before adding the super glue on. It should make them a bit more stable than just having only hot glue. Like with my Kurloz horns I wore them for Halloween and I was under an umbrella for three parts of the night and they kept getting hit and bumped around. Didn't break off or fall. Though they have fallen a few times but always stayed on the headband. And it's also nice if you put the horns under your wig so you don't see the headband and the glue job, also helps with it being stable as well. And to answer the other question that you posted under this one, drying should be around 4-6 days. The outer part of the horn will dry faster than the middle and you want the middle to dry as well.
Q: Is this enough clay for if I want to have an aluminum base core?
A: I'm not sure actually. I've never done it that way, but I would have extra just in case I would say.
Q: Where did you get the costume for Kurloz?
A: I got it at a Halloween store actually. This isn't the one I have but I couldn't really find it on their website. But this is pretty close to it www.spirithalloween.com/produc…
Q: What do you mean by...Sanded down? How do you do that and what materials do you use?
A: I used just a normal nail file www.amazon.com/Revlon-Compact-… to sand the cracks down so it would be easier to paint them. In my video of painting the Dolorosa horns I started to sand down and paint the Karkat horns. www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXu3b6… you can skip to 8:18 in the video to see just slightly on what I do, I'm sorry if it goes a bit fast when doing so.
Q: So how exactly do you do the blending?
A: What I did was start with the red and orange base colors. Without letting them dry to much I had mixed the red and orange together to a color I like and then began to paint in the middle of the two base colors. I'm sure this may help a little better though it's really fast but you get to see how it is kinda done and all. And the colors are really bright due to my crappy camera www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXu3b6…
Q: Have you ever had the problem were when you leave rounded Model Magic out it gets flat on one side? If so, how do you go about fixing/avoiding that?
A: I have had that problem before and one way to fix that you can roll it on a different side each day as it dries, that should help with not having a flat side. Also once it gets dry enough on the sides you can stand it up on its base and that works as well.
Q: You mentioned putting the horns on under the wig. do you cut the wig in any way or like... how exactly would you go about putting the horns under the wig?
A: You wouldn't need to cut the wig in anyway. If your wig has the little rows of hair all you need to do is carefully push the horns, one on each side of course through the rows and then there you go, your horns are now through your wig and no one will see your headband. But with not cutting the wig you will have hair that is kinda going places where the horns are sticking out, that is an easy fix. Take the strands of hair and just wrap it gently around the base of the horn where it is coming out and you can either pin it to your wig or hairspray it depending on how you would like it to be. I hope this helps a bit with putting the horns under the wig.
Q: I was wondering how well the horns stay on with just glue? I'm worried they'll come off from running around and being crazy :/ how well do they stay on??
A: But with super and hot glue they should be fine for the most part, though I would say try and not be too crazy since you never know with these horns. I've bumped mine around a lot when I was walking around as Kurloz for halloween and they seemed to be fine and are still holding up. But they should be fine for con and running around and all that jazz. Just bring your glue with you to the con just in case haha

Ehhh oh gosh I haven't had this question asked and so I never thought of it.
Okay I just messured the Kurloz horns that I still have here with me and I would say about 1-2 inches in at most. If that doesn't look right then you can go more.

Heres a question, I need to make the horns by tuesday and wear them on tuesday, today is friday so if i make them today can i microwave or cook the clay?

Catchmewithyourlips In reply to thunderingProphet [2013-12-13 20:17:38 +0000 UTC]
You wouldn't be able to microwave or bake them. The package says not to do either and so I would advise to not. But I would say you may try to put them under a light and let them dry that way.

Ben Nye is the best stuff you could use for makeup

Of course. As for the wig it was actually not mine but my sisters. She got it at a sore called Halloween Spirit and I believe she said it was the pixie wig and they just dyed it black for other cosplays.

Are headbands the only way to attach the horns? How do you do your sizing?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Catchmewithyourlips In reply to waterfish5678901 [2013-10-02 06:55:36 +0000 UTC]
Well I've seen a few ways that you can attach horns without using a headband, but I find it a bit more safe to use one anyways. It has a more steady place to sit upon as you wear them either under your wig or over it.
As for sizing I just go by inches. Like Gamzee is between 12-13 inches as to Kurloz is 15-16 inches if you measure while the clay is straight and in the pointed form you want. With that sizing then you can curve them to what they need to look like.

waterfish5678901 In reply to Catchmewithyourlips [2013-10-03 03:01:41 +0000 UTC]
Okay, I'll stick with that method then. Do you recommend plaster gauze for reinforcement if you know the horns are going to be grabbed at lot?
Ohhh okay! That is sweeeet So do you think I could apply the method for Kurloz horns and the Nepta horns for making Equius's horns?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Catchmewithyourlips In reply to waterfish5678901 [2013-10-07 22:15:05 +0000 UTC]
They should be fine for being grabbed a lot. If you let them dry for about three more days than I recommend then they will harden a bit more and that will help. Also with all the paint that will be on them should also give it support for grabbing. Just make sure it's not like grip grabbing and all. But if you feel like they will break with people grabbing them then plaster gauze could help, I've never used it so I'm not sure if it will make it heavy or not.
I would say that would work for making his horns. Try it out and tell me how that goes~
