Description Zippers are a source of confusion and frustration for a lot of people. I myself had absolutely no idea how to go about installing one for a looong time (as I suspect owners of my really old suits could attest, eheh). So I made this tutorial to help show how I do it, and maybe make it seem a little less intimidating for someone who's never sewn a zipper before.

I hope the guide is fairly self-explanatory and easy to follow~
If you have any questions, let me know. Happy sewing!

I think I'm misunderstanding....you put the zipper on the front of the suit with the teeth facing away from the opening? I want to put a zipper on the hood of my head- wouldn't it make more sense to sew it from the back side? Or is there something I'm missing?

Look at the photos- you sew it facing away but then when it zips up it faces the correct direction and all the edges are cleanly finished. You can sew directly to the back, but then there'll be a raw edge of fur running along it. It won't be as clean looking as my method.

thanks! have you put a zipper where there are markings (like where a tigers strips would be.) my fursona has markings on her back and i would like for my future fursuit to have a zipper in the back but i'm worried the markings will get wonky.

Yeah- no particular trick for that, just have to be very careful and use a lot of pins/clips to hold the zipper in place while you sew.

Could you handsew a zipper into a fursuit head? Using a blanket stitch?

I wouldn't use a blanket stitch. I would use a backhand stitch as shown here! www.wikihow.com/Hand-Sew-a-Zip…

Hi. I've been looking into getting a sewing machine for making the bodysuit on muy fursuits but I don't have the slightest clue on sewings machines. What type of sewing machine do you use or what would you recommend I get?

I have a Bernina- I like it all right but I think if I had to do it again I would pick another model. The problem with mine is that small pieces tend to get sucked into the hole in the needleplate, and the sewing machine doesn't have a walking foot built in, so I have to do a lot of little things to make sure the bottom layer isn't pulled more than the top layer. I don't know what machine I would want instead though.

What machine to buy is kind of a tricky question in of itself... if you're only going to sew one or two fursuits then be done, a mid-range Brother should work just fine. If you're going to do this as a job, ideally an industrial machine is my favorite tool (Pfaff or Singer is good), but it takes up a lot of space and can sometimes be hard to get a hold of. If you happen across a vintage sewing machine for cheap or free, they can be dependable workhorses, but sometimes the costs associated with fixing and refurbing it outweigh any benefit. So it all just depends on your budget and your plans regarding sewing.

Thank you so much! This is helpful. Think il go with an industrial. Il have to save up for it a bit but I'm sure it will be well worth it.
