Description
I'm sorry that this picture is so gigantic, but this tutorial will teach fursuiters how to make their own fursuit heads with wire frames. I know that most tutorials use foam, but I wanted to be different.Wolfbird's "follow-me eyes" tutorial can be found here: [link]
Also, if you use my design for your fursuit, please give me some sort of credit! It would be great if you let people know that RoseHexwit helped you with your fursuiting. :3
EDIT: I submitted this tutorial several years ago. It's very outdated. Haters are going to hate, but I've made two heads since this one that look WAY better.

NEVER USE THIS METHOD it is dangerous and ugly. It MAY save money but it is N O T worth it!

I suggest for future heads that you should use foam. It is much softer and more squishy to the touch, also it is much easier to work with. It's cool that you want to be creative with a wire base though Β ! I also think you should try using long pile fur. Yes it is pretty expensive, but Distinctive Fabrics has really cheep and good quality faux fur. Cool tutorial!

There is a much safer way to do this with plastic mesh, it works close to the same, and holds in a much more sturdy fashion <3

the wire could cut Β you badly, (im sure you don't plan on getting bandages or or stitches when you're having fun suiting!) or even damage the fur! do not use this method unless you're crazy and fine with (maybe) taking a trip to the hospital!!Β

just be extra careful, although I've never witnessed any suit-related injuries (or suits, for that matter) I know the dangers! maybe line the inside of the suit/wires with tape or foam or something? (Or not, if you're sure what you've done already is enough, but I wouldn't be so certain) also, the pointy edges can cut fur in more severe cases, as well as warp and shift the head so it looks weird. (That is, if you have a lot of things hitting and applying pressure to the suit)Β Β Β

I dont have tape, foam or money .-.
But i have a smaller piece of tape. but i already furred the head.
And ma head looks a little bit weird, yes. (but i like this weird, her nose is a little bit down xD)
but i only clay some teeth and tongue for the head. is that TO heavy do ta think?
well, im 13 and i dont really know how to make an fursuit, i chose the easiest.
if i heard this. i really think that the easiest way not the best way is..
But! im finish this head. *sigh*

No tape or foam? Not even Styrofoam? hmm, I suppose it's okay if your head is built sturdily and safely enough. As for clay, if your teeth/tongue aren't HULKINGLY HUMONGOUS, then you're probably fine.Β
I'm hardly finished with my first fursuit, and I decided to be brave and go all-out foam style (probably not the best idea for a beginner) but I think as long as its wearable and safe, you can use any method! No matter what method you use, it's almost guaranteed that you'll be making awesome suits in several days/weeks/months/years/eras/etc! Β Β Β

No xD I have no foam xD
and, its hard steel or something.. i dont remember anymore what it is, but its hard.(Its really hard to bend it o.o....)
Sow i think it can take the clay ^^
hmm, i dont how my fursuit ends..ouo.
but, i think foam is really hard to make it just like that that you want.
and i dont feel pain or see damaged fur..

you may or may not know this by now, but in this tutorial, your suit's ears were to close! I suggest putting them as far away from each other as your actual ears.
Placement Suggestion Time! (How to find good ear placement!)
In a mirror, just put your hands on your ears and move them toward the top of your head, and then, carefully, take the suit's ears and put them where your hands were, so you can get a good idea of where to glue/sew on the actual suit. Don't hesitate to move the ears around a tiny bit, to see what will look best. c:Β

also, do NOT use wire! It can cut you, fall apart, and just be downright uncomfortable! I suggest using plastic canvas from Michael's. It's safe, secure, AND cheap! check out Moon Boots (on YouTube)'s head tutorials on how to properly use plastic canvas. (Before you buy the stuff, of course!)

If your looking for a cheap way to make a head, its best to use foam, it not expensive if you get it in the right place! I got over a yard of foam for just $10 at walmart!

Eee I Love it!
Now, I do have a question for you dear. Would it be possible to replaced the copper wire with metal hangers? I'm merely a teenager and have no way of acquiring anything save for the rare occasion which I have money and actually make it to the store . ^^"
I have a ageneral idea of how to transfer, but I simply don't know if it would work.
Thank you for the amazing tutorial and any help you can provide.

Nevermind heheh, I got it figured out very nicely and it's coming together quite well! I completed the frame using old wire hanger (which are a pain to bend/work with, I might add!), and it looked similar to yours though I've been using an old baseball cap as a base; to keep it from digging into my head, as well as to make it bit more comfortable for me with the extra balance. While I did this, I use a -ton- of hot glue to hold everything together, layering it multiple times to ensure that it didn't pop out of place whilst I worked. I strung some clear tape over it fill in all of the gaps between the sections, and now am in the process of adding more shape to it using sheets of plastic (which I got from cutting apart sandwich bags) and poly-fil.

okay guys, we get it, its ot the best out there. at least she put an effort to it, unlike some who dont. we dont have to keep repeating ourselves. this is an old tutorial anyway, im sure she has laerned, and improved. all fursuiters had to start some where right? you just cant make your first suit, and expectΒ it to be the best, so shut up. leave her alone.

I haven't made too many fursuits, but I know from research that the cheapest, but not a very good method, is the wire technique. I realize this is probably your first fursuit, but to make a better one would be to use foam, which can be cheap. I understand budget and stuff, but if you're going to made a fursuit tutorial, you have to use a suitable material. But nice try. You'll get better in time!

its comment threads like this make me sad to be a furry. It seems to me that she is new to it and she gave it her all, the negativity here is sickening. You should all be ashamed of your self's, would you be that hurt full if you were face to face? Pathetic, just pathetic comments.

Hun, I ain't gonna lie, this is a really bad way to make a fursuit head. I appreciate that you gave it your all, but foam is basically the best way to go. this is unstable, easily broken and it just looks cheap and nasty. I hope you've improved, but I warn my fellow furs: please do not use this method. Foam is expensive and I should know, I'm struggling to find foam that I can afford, but it is so worth it.
Don't use wire for your head, furbros. It's a bad, bad idea.

Hey, I actually tried this method and my fur suit head is really coming along. If you are careful enough and use stable wire it really helps. And don't hate, I think it's adorable. I understand your trying to help and foam is a good method, but I like how she branched out and tried something newπ

true that. As a suggestion for fellow suiters, you can substitute wires for plastic canvas (found at Michael's) of course, plastic canvas takes much more gluing, it's safer and more stable than wire. (Plus its only $0.59 a sheet!)Β

Yeah, no.
Fursuits are not made out of just wire and a water bottle.
You can do foam, which is pretty typical for fursuits, but it can be a little expensive. Deal with it, you can't take shortcuts like using wire.
Or plastic mesh is pretty cheap.
Just don't
