Baby's going down!"Oh, no..." Hannah whispered, paralyzed with shock at the scene before her. Their fabulous, but accident prone mare had been turned out without her leg protection. She threw the mightiest buck Hannah had seen in her life, and was in the process of slipping. For a split second Hannah was hopeful-she had a great sense of her body-but the hope disappeared quickly. Baby could simply not keep her footing, and slid across her belly, her left legs crushing under her. After fully grasping the situation, she ran out to the mare, calling for help as she sprinted down to the sand ring. Ava came rushing down to meet her. Baby still hadn't gotten up.
They flew over the fence to the mare's aid, trying to help her up. They pushed and clucked, but Baby made little effort. They tried to pull on her mane and tail, in a vain attempt to lift 1,000 pounds of horse. She tried to stand, moved a few inches, and promptly collapsed back down.
"Call the vet," Hannah ordered, "Now."
